Lakota East Theater presents ‘The Secret Life of Girls’

Posted by akiefaber March 18th, 2013, 11:34 am Post a Comment

Lakota East High School’s Thunderhawk Theater and its newly founded Zonta Club have partnered to present a community event that focuses on the struggles faced by young women in today’s society.

In its production of “The Secret Life of Girls,” 7 p.m. Friday, friendly athletic competition among a group of girls takes a spiraling turn as each girl’s personal battles surface.

Each character confronts real life issues and in the end, resolves to change her ways. An educational performance on the affect of bullying reestablishes that girls are not alone in their fight.

“Everyone has faced the perilous trials of junior high,” said Kristen Statt, who teaches East’s acting classes, among other classes at East. “It’s a tumultuous time in every young girl’s life and is not as easy as everyone may believe.”

The production is the culminating project of this year’s Acting II and III classes. While the female students will assume acting roles, the male students will serve as directors, stage managers and technical directors. Following its debut, the group hopes to take the show on the road and perform at some of Lakota’s junior schools.

“Let’s Talk” is the title of the Zonta Club’s video that extends the discussion into the realm of the high school girl. East’s new Zonta Club, advised by Jill Kelechi, is an empowerment group for young women trying to impact the lives and minds of their peers. The Zonta Club seeks to bring attention and discussion to the unseen struggles in the daily lives of young women.

The community is invited to explore these struggles through a multimedia performance and facilitated discussion in the Lakota East Theater. Admission is free. For more information, contact the Thunderhawk Theater at 755-7211 ext. 15305.
