An invitation to sing (and to sing with zing)

New VOA Chorus director encourages women to join

When Stacey St. John took over as the new director of the Voice of America Chorus in November, the group’s 34 members welcomed her with open arms.

Now, St. John is encouraging other women to join the local chorus.

“For any woman out there, who enjoys singing, this is a fantastic outlet. Not only to use your musical talent, but to also be a part of a true sisterhood,” she said.

St. John, 38, of Liberty Township brings experience as a second-generation barbershop singer and as someone who began her career as a Sweet Adeline – a worldwide competitive barbershop-style organization – at age 18. She takes over the position once held by the chorus’ founding director, Traci Martin.

“When we had our first rehearsal, it seemed like a seamless transition; Stacey took over and it was great,” said Jane Buehler, who was one of the group’s founding members. “We will miss Traci, of course, but Stacey has just jumped right in, and I think we are going to accomplish great things with her.

“We know her history, and are all excited about having such a accomplished director and someone who is also fun to be around.”

When Buehler and six others joined Martin at a Panera restaurant on Aug. 9, 2010, they talked about the risks of starting a chorus. Martin said it was like starting a business. There was a budget, there were costs associated with competitions and there were even two chorus groups – the Cincinnati Sound and the Gem City Chorus – each less than a 30-minute drive away.

“VOA Chorus stole my heart,” Martin said. “This group of fine, talented, fun-loving women has changed my life forever.”

Martin said the group changed her by allowing her to exercise her musical freedoms. “They allowed me that kind of freedom when everyone else stayed in that cocoon. We were not the typical Sweet Adeline chorus. That is one of the reasons why Stacey wanted to direct this group.”

That unique style allowed the Voice of America Chorus to quickly distinguish itself at the annual Sweet Adelines Region 4 Competition.

In its first competition, in April 2011, VOA captured first place in the Small Chorus Division. In April 2012, the group garnered second place in the Mid-Sized Chorus division, having grown by 40 percent in one year.

The chorus also earned a Silver Certificate at last summer’s World Choir Games in Cincinnati.

“We grew this chorus two years ago from a dream to a reality,” Martin said. “They continue to aspire to a high level of excellence in singing and performing … I’m proud of everything they have accomplished.”

Martin is moving to Northville, Mich., to be closer to family and to purchase a business franchise. She left her chorus in the hands of a longtime friend and experienced singing coach.

“I have traveled all over coaching different choruses and quartets, so to have a chorus here locally that I have the opportunity to direct is very rewarding, because you get to see an improvement on a weekly basis,” St. John said. “To me there is nothing more satisfying than helping singers be the best they can be.

“I feel like the luckiest girl in the world.”

TO JOIN

The Voice of America Chorus is open to all women regardless of residence. It holds open rehearsals 7 p.m. Mondays at the West Chester Church of the Nazarene, located at 7951 Tylersville Road, near the border of West Chester and Mason.

Voice of America Chorus names new director

Posted by akiefaber October 16th, 2012, 1:48 pm Post a Comment

The Voice of America Chorus announced earlier this month that Stacey St. John of Liberty Township will take over as its new director Nov. 5. The cappella singing group’s founding director, Traci Martin, is moving out of state in the spring.

Stacey St. John will replace Traci Martin as the new director of the Voice of America Chorus on Nov. 5. Martin was the group’s founding director. The group was formed more than two years ago and has performed well at the Sweet Adelines Region 4 Competition and at World Choir Games. Photo provided.

“VOA Chorus stole my heart”, Martin said. “This group of fine, talented, fun-loving women has changed my life forever.”

In its two-and-a-half-year history, the Voice of America Chorus has distinguished itself at the Sweet Adelines Region 4 Competition each time they have competed.

In their very first competition in April of 2011, VOA captured first place in the Small Chorus Division.

“They continue to aspire to a high level of excellence in singing and performing. This is definitely not your typical chorus. I’m proud of everything they have accomplished.”

The new director brings experience as a second-generation barbershop singer and began her Sweet Adeline career at age 18. St. John also won the Sweet Adelines worldwide quartet competition in 2008 and performed throughout the country with her quartet, Moxie Ladies.

Currently, St. John travels throughout the U.S. coaching choruses and quartets.

She recently shared her excitement about her new position with Voice of America Chorus.

“Being a part of Sweet Adelines and singing this beautiful a cappella music is magical. Not only do I enjoy singing, but I love coaching and helping others become better singers, too,” St. John said.

“I feel like the luckiest girl in the world to have the opportunity to lead Voice of America Chorus on a weekly basis and I’m looking forward to making fantastic music with this dynamic group of women.”

The VOA Chorus has two events in October. First up is “HalloSING”, a fundraiser taking place this Saturday involving Halloween costumes, food, raffles, karaoke, including a chorus performance.

Then, on Oct 29, VOA will present a class on barbershop for the Warren County Adult Education Center. Cost for the class is $10 and it is open to all.

Furthermore, VOA Chorus has open rehearsals for those interested in joining every Monday at 7 p.m. West Chester Church of the Nazarene.

The Voice of America Chorus earned a Silver Certificate at the 2012 World Choir Games this month in Cincinnati.

The local group was honored for their performance in the open barbershop competition July 12.

The chorus, which will celebrate its two-year anniversary in August, also competed in the Sweet Adeline Region 4 Competition at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center in Covington for the second time.

“The first time we competed we were a just small chorus of 23 members, but we still came in first place in our division and fourth place overall,” said Traci Martin, Voice of America Chorus director. “Last spring we went to our second Region 4 Competition and had grown to 36 members. Even with these transitions, we still came in second in the next division up, so we continue to excel.”

West Chester’s Voice of America Chorus has open rehearsals every Monday at 7 p.m. West Chester Church of the Nazarene. For more information about the group or to find out how to join, call 513-755-7977.

Lakota West choir honored to be part of Choir Games

Posted by akiefaber July 18th, 2012, 5:18 pm Post a Comment

Just prior to their performance at a Friendship Concert on July 7 during the 2012 World Choir Games, students making up the Lakota West Chamber Choir found out that the audience was over capacity and that they wouldn’t have a seat to watch the other choirs perform.

Instead of sulking, the choir from Lakota West, two others from Cincinnati, two more from Canada and another from the Czech Republic performed for each other while backstage in the gymnasium of St. Anthony Church.

“It was probably the highlight of the Games for me because we were purely singing for fun,” said Daniel Townsley, who graduated from Lakota West earlier this year. “The directors really had nothing to do with it and we were just singing for each other. It was just different.”

The performance in front of the audience that night also proved to be different.

“It was like we were being received as the away team at the Super Bowl,” Lakota West choir director Anthony Nims said. “When we walked down the aisle of that church, they were screaming, hollering and cheering.

“To get that type of reaction I think may even be life changing to some of them … It was just a great thing, like an entire city sort of woke up and saw how awesome – what they do is.”

The audience that night was not the only group of people who enjoyed the local choir’s performance.

Earlier that day, the Lakota West choir performed in front of international judges and were awarded a Gold Diploma, which was given to choirs who finished with some the highest overall scores during the Games. The honor also gives the program the right to perform in the next two World Choir Games.

That being said, it could be difficult for the local choir to get to the next World Choir Games, which will take place in Riga, Latvia in 2014.

However, the Lakota West students were able to learn about many different cultures at this year’s Games.

For example, some West choir members were able to do the electric slide with Puerto Rico choir members, who do it differently than the traditional way in the United States.

In addition, other West students formed friendships with students from Austria, Australia, England, Indonesia and Nigeria to name a few.

“From day one, it was just spectacular. I was so pleasantly surprised at how much fun I had and how thrilling it was just to be in the same atmosphere of so many people who all spoke so many different languages,” Townsley said. “It was just so fabulously chaotic.”

Making up the group that excelled at the Games included Ethan Bennet, Alexis Blevins, Addie Bryant, Kayla Burley, Katie Davis, Ben Dunlea, John Harper, Mandee Jordan, Elizabeth Landis, Nick McGill, Chrissy McKinney, Giovanii Moreno, Ryan Sandy, Greg Schuster, Julie Street, Jennifer Swadner, Alex Thesken, Jason Threm, Daniel Townsley, Ariel Winston and Tommy Wessendarp.

Joining the Fairfield Choraliers show choir at the amphitheater are Sangerkreis Hildburghausen, from Germany; Payap University Choir, from Thailand; and the Cincinnati Men’s Chorus.

“It’s a big community event. We’re excited to host it and bring some international folks in and make new friends,’’ said Ben Strickler, parks events manager. “We’re connecting to the international event but have that hometown flavor.”

Meanwhile, the West Chester concert, which will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday at The Square at Union Centre, will feature performances from four choirs including the Sakura Ladies Choir and the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick Glee Club from Cincinnati, as well as the Abuja Choral Ensemble from Nigeria and the Taichung Chamber Choir from Taipei.

Voice of America Chorus

The Voice of America Chorus has announced that it will once again participate in the Sweet Adeline Region 4 Competition at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center in Covington April 20-21.

Last year the group captured first place in the small chorus division and fourth place in the “a capella” singing contest.

“We felt that was pretty good for our first time out”, said Traci Martin, Voice of America Chorus director. “Thanks to a successful membership drive in January, we have suddenly grown to a mid-sized chorus and look forward to competing in this new category.”

Competition sessions are open to the public. Tickets are available on the day of the competition at the NKCC box office for $30 each session (students, $15). For contest information, call 513-554-2648 or visit www.sai-region4.org.

To prepare for the contest, the group will host a friends and family performance at the West Chester Church of the Nazarene (Hawk’s Hall), 7951 Tylersville Road, Monday at 7:30 p.m. The evening will serve as a dress rehearsal for the competition. Food and beverages will be served and the event is free and open to the public.

The Chorus is also slated to compete in the newly formed barbershop category at the World Choir Games in Cincinnati Thursday, July 12. The World Choir Games will take place July 4-14 and feature other local groups including the Southern Gateway Chorus, Sound of Joy, Region 4 Chorus, Greater Cincinnati Indian Community Choir, Mason Chorale and the Lakota West Chamber Choir.
