Weather: Friday and Saturday look perfect

Posted by akiefaber June 14th, 2013, 9:55 am Post a Comment

After a rainy past couple of days, it appears as though Friday and Saturday are going to be picture perfect weather wise. However, barbecues might be rained out on Father’s Day.

The National Weather Service is forecasting a high near 77 degrees with party sunny skies this afternoon. Tonight will be mostly clear with a low around 57.

On Saturday, it will mostly sunny with a high near 81.

Thunderstorms could be coming back to the area after midnight late Saturday and early Sunday. Chance of precipitation is currently only 30 percent for Saturday night and 40 percent on Sunday afternoon and night.

The low on Saturday will be around 67, while the high on Sunday will reach near 81 and the low will dip to around 68.

Storms could still be around on Monday, before clearing up to most sunny skies with highs in the upper 70s and lows in the low 60s Tuesday through Thursday.

Accuweather.com is currently predicting much warmer weather next week. While the National Weather Service is forecasting a mostly sunny day with a high near 78 Wednesday, Accuweather is predicting a scorcher with partly sunny skies and a high of 94.

Accuweather is forecasting the July 4th to be a mostly cloudy day with a high around 89 and a low near 72.

Hot, humid today; strong winds possible tonight

Posted by akiefaber June 12th, 2013, 7:52 am Post a Comment

Cincinnati-weather

Jennifer Edwards Baker reports:

Hot and humid conditions today will give way to possibly severe and damaging thunderstorms tonight as a cold front moves into Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.

The main threats will be high winds gusting more than 60 mph, quarter-size hail and brief, heavy downpours that could lead to flash-flooding, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

An isolated tornado also is possible, said meteorologist Steve Rhebenach.

The severe weather comes as a so-called derecho pattern developed in the Midwest on Tuesday. It could spawn damaging with gusts as strong as 100 mph, tornadoes and hail the size of large golf balls in places like Cincinnati, Milwaukee, Chicago, Cleveland and Detroit.

“It’s possible there could be a derecho,” Rhebenach said. “It’s not clear if the winds would be quite that strong when it comes through our area, but we could have strong and damaging winds.”

A derecho is an intense and long-lived series of straight-line winds often associated with fast-moving thunderstorms or rain.

Derecho windstorms occur once every year or two across the central and northeastern U.S. in a band from Texas to New England. They pack hazardous winds of at least 75 mph or more and maintain their intensity for hours as they sweep across vast distances.

Today will be partly sunny with a high temperature of 91 degrees, well above the normal high of 81 for this time of year.

The storms could hit as soon as 4 p.m. or 5 p.m., but it’s more likely they will not develop until 10 p.m., Rhebenach said. The storms will last on and off throughout the overnight hours. The greatest chance for damaging weather could be early Thursday as the cold front moves in from the northwest.

The overnight low will only fall to 70 degrees.

Thursday will still hold the potential for scattered showers and thunderstorms through noon, but the threat for damaging weather will be over.

It will feel considerably cooler and more seasonal with a high temperature only reaching 78.

Thursday night will be mostly clear with a low around 57.

The weather should clear by the weekend. Friday and Saturday will be sunny with highs in the mid-to-upper 70s.

Rain on and off this week; high water in spots

Posted by akiefaber June 10th, 2013, 8:22 am Post a Comment

bilde

Jennifer Edwards Baker reports:

We’re off to a wet start this week with an 80 percent chance for showers and thunderstorms today, mainly before 1 p.m.

Severe weather is not expected, but don’t be surprised to see a flash of lightning or thunder. High water already has been reported on highways, especially on Interstate 71 at Pfeiffer Road in Blue Ash and at various spots along Interstate 75 anywhere from Sharon Road to downtown Cincinnati.

High water and an accident shut down the left two lanes for about an hour earlier this morning on southbound I-75 at the Lockland split.

Grab a light jacket and umbrella as you head out the door this morning. It’s 69 degrees with a lunchtime high only expected to creep up to 72, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

It will remain humid today. The high temperature will reach 76 degrees.

The rain should taper off by this afternoon, but we could see more precipitation Monday night as a cold front moves through. The low temperature will fall to 62 overnight.

In all, about a half inch of rain could accumulate today and tonight.

The sun will return Tuesday, along with less humid conditions. The high temperature will reach a more seasonal 84 degrees.

By Tuesday night, more rain could fall after 5 p.m. It will be partly cloudy overnight with a low around 67 degrees.

Wednesday should be partly sunny – and steamy – with a high of 88 degrees.

There will be a 30 percent chance for rain during the day.

That will increase to 70 percent by Wednesday night as the threat for severe weather arrives. The overnight low will be 69.

There are early indications these storms could have the potential to produce high winds gusting more than 60 mph, large hail and heavy rain. Meteorologists say they will be able to fine-tune the forecast by Wednesday morning.

More rain could stick around Thursday morning before the sun takes over. It will be cooler with a high of 80.

Pleasant week in store: mild temps, clear skies

Posted by akiefaber June 3rd, 2013, 6:11 am Post a Comment

Cincinnati-Weather-June-3

Jennifer Edwards Baker reports:

After last week’s humidity and storms, we’ll enjoy a pleasant stretch of sunny, mild weather this week.

Cooler air from Canada settled over Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky this weekend. That mass will linger over the region the next several days, keeping daytime high temperatures a little below normal for this time of year.

It’s 61 degrees this morning at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport in Hebron, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

We’ll wind up at 74 degrees under mostly sunny skies by 5 p.m. That’s about five degrees cooler than normal for early June.

Tonight will be clear but cool with a low around 53.

Expect lots of sun Tuesday and Wednesday with highs in the mid-to-upper 70s.

The chance for rain will return by Wednesday night and stick around Thursday and Thursday night.

By the weekend, we’ll be back in the sunshine with continued mild temperatures and daytime highs in the 70s.

Chance of strong storms lingers through weekend

Posted by akiefaber May 31st, 2013, 7:29 am Post a Comment

Jennifer Edwards Baker reports:

Strong to severe storms with high, damaging winds, heavy rainfall and possibly flooding could develop this weekend.

Isolated tornadoes also could develop Saturday afternoon and Saturday night.

The good news: these storms are arriving on the edge of a cold front from the northwest. That will bring more comfortable and seasonal temperatures into our region by Sunday and at least through early next week, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

But first, there’s a 50 percent chance we could see winds gusting up to 60 mph and quarter-size hail anytime after 1 p.m. this afternoon and into the evening.

Otherwise, it will be cloudy and muggy with a high temperature of 84 degrees.

The overnight low will be 69.

Saturday should stay dry again until the afternoon. It will be partly sunny and 82 degrees, but windy with gusts up to 29 mph.

As the cold front rolls in, the threat for severe weather will increase from 50 percent Saturday afternoon to 80 percent by Saturday night, said meteorologist Andy Hatzos.

Again, winds could whip up to 60 mph or more, large hail could pelt down, and heavy rainfall could lead to flooding on some roads and streams.

Isolated tornadoes also are a possibility.

The overnight low will fall to 66.

By 10 a.m. Sunday, the bad weather will roll out of the area, leaving behind plenty of sunshine and the mercury hovering in the mid-70s. That’s right on track with normal highs and lows for this time of year of 78 and 57.

Daytime highs will remain in the 70s with overnight lows in the 50s and 60s through Wednesday. It will be mostly sunny.

High temperatures flirt with the 90s this week

Posted by akiefaber May 28th, 2013, 5:20 am Post a Comment

Jennifer Edwards Baker reports:

Warmer-than-normal temperatures more typical for the middle of summer instead of late spring will keep Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky air conditioners humming this week.

The mercury will soar to 86 today and stay in the upper 80s most of this week, flirting with the 90-degree mark by Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

A high pressure system is dragging warmer air in from the Great Plains, said meteorologist Allen Randall.

Normally, the high only reaches 77 with overnight lows around 57.

It was already 70 degrees by 4 a.m. in downtown Cincinnati. There’s a slight chance for showers this morning. Later, it should be mostly sunny.

As warm as it is, we are nowhere near the record high of 95, set on this date in 1911.

We’ll stay mostly dry this week with plenty of sun in the forecast through Thursday.

There’s a 30 percent chance for showers and thunderstorms by Friday.

Holiday weekend forecast: cooler but pleasant

Posted by akiefaber May 24th, 2013, 8:59 am Post a Comment

Jennifer Edwards Baker reports:

Memorial Day weekend is typically the unofficial start of summer, but this year it will be a cool one.

You will need a sweater or jacket this morning. It’s clear and 51 degrees in downtown Cincinnati, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

You might see a light drizzle or shower. Most locations will slip into the 40s by daybreak.

Today will be mostly cloudy with gradual afternoon sun. The high temperature will struggle to reach the mid-60s by 5 p.m.

Tonight will be mostly clear – but cold with a low of 42.

Normally, our high temperature is 76 with lows in the mid-50s. We’re falling below normal due to a high pressure system bringing cooler air in from the north, said meteorologist Brian Coniglio.

Saturday and Sunday look near picture perfect: mostly sunny, highs in the upper 60s and low 70s, ideal for going on a long bike ride or strolling amid the booths at Taste of Cincinnati, sampling the city’s culinary fare.

Monday will be mostly cloudy but dry with a high of 73.

Overnight lows this weekend will remain brisk and in the upper 40s and low 50s.

Once the work week begins on Tuesday, we’ll be back to summertime heat.

Highs will be in the low 80s and reach the mid-80s by Wednesday.

Strong thunderstorms today, followed by cool down

Posted by akiefaber May 22nd, 2013, 7:54 am Post a Comment

Jennifer Edwards Baker reports:

Widespread showers and thunderstorms will strike today, with the worst expected mid-afternoon.

Winds could gust up to 58 mph with quarter-size hail anytime after 1 p.m., according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

Tornadoes cannot be ruled out, but the threat for them to develop is small, said meteorologist Scott Hickman.

It’s warm and muggy already this morning with 65 degrees at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport. We’ll be in the mid-70s by lunchtime. The high temperature will peak near 80 at 5 p.m.

The chance for showers and thunderstorms will stick around through midnight. It will be mostly cloudy overnight with a low around 60.

More rain could fall Thursday, but it will feel considerably cooler as a cold front and high pressure system pushes in from the north. The high will only top out at 70.

As the holiday weekend starts Friday, the sun will re-emerge with a cool high of just 65 degrees. Friday night, the temperature will dip into the low 40s.

Conditions will remain mild for this time of year through early next week. Daytime highs will be in the low- to mid-70s with overnight lows in the 50s.

We’ll see a mix of sun and clouds with low chances for rain through Tuesday.
