Police to offer free self-defense training class Saturday

The West Chester Police Department will offer a free self-defense class from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. this Saturday. According to a release, the class is designed to encourage individuals to be prepared and confident when faced with a potentially dangerous confrontation.

The class is offered at the police department on Beckett Road. Participants should dress comfortably in order to participate fully in the class.

The police department offers free self-defense classes throughout the year.

The classes are free. To register or for more information, call 513-759-7254.

West Chester offering program to help homeowners

West Chester Township is providing a series of gatherings, which are aimed at helping homeowners protect their property investments.

The first session, which is free to attend, will show homeowners to work independently and as a neighborhood to protect their property investments through property maintenance, leveling the impacts of foreclosed properties and proper permitting processes, according to a release.

The Township’s code enforcement officers, community development specialists, police and fire department representatives will be available at the event to answer homeowners’ questions.

The session will be held Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the West Chester Library.

To register, which is required, email bwilson@westchesteroh.org.

Other sessions include:

Emergency Preparedness – Severe Weather Safety
May 1, 7 to 9 p p.m. at West Chester Library

West Chester public safety and weather experts will offer insight into severe weather predictions and how to react to severe weather warnings. Also learn how to prepare ahead of time for the potential of severe weather.

Management in Neighborhoods
July 18, 7 to 9 p.m. at West Chester Library

Wildlife experts will offer important information on how to live harmoniously with wildlife in your own backyard, and steps to take when situations are not so harmonious.

What Lies Beneath?
September 17, 7 to 9 p.m. at West Chester Library

Learn about the public utilities, right-of-way and easements associated with residential properties. What is under the ground on your property and for what are you responsible? Also, learn how you can protect the infrastructure beneath the surface.

West Chester to host property maintenance workshop

Maintaining property in West Chester Township is the topic of the April 3 West Chester University series of gatherings.

Township code enforcement officers and community development specialists along with representatives from the police and fire departments will speak at the session, which begins at 7 p.m., at the Midpointe Library’s West Chester branch, 9363 Centre Pointe Dr.

The two-hour session will explain proper permitting processes and how to work individually or as a group to protect property value through maintenance despite foreclosed properties.

There is no fee for the two-hour program, but registration is required.

The West Chester Township Police Department is currently accepting applications for its next session of Citizen Police Academy, which is a 10-week program that will be offered on Tuesday evenings starting March 26.

The program is offered as part of the community’s ongoing education program called West Chester University. The Citizen Police Academy is designed to give civilians a closer look at the workings of the police department, according to a recent press release given out by the township.

“The Citizen Police Academy was created to build a strong and lasting partnership between the Police Department and the community,” said West Chester Township Police Chief Erik Niehaus. “Participants will learn firsthand about our operations to foster a better understanding between police and the public.”

“Alumni of the program have become ambassadors for the police department and have assisted at events like Touch a Truck and the bike rodeo.”

Applicants must be at least 21 years old and either reside or work in West Chester Township. Class size is limited.

Curriculum for the Citizen Police Academy will include: Patrol operations, criminal investigations, special operations, traffic investigations and much more. Participants will visit the shooting range, the township jail, the forensics lab and ride along on patrol.

West Chester University is a series of informative programs offered to encourage better communication between West Chester Township government and the residents and businesses of the community.

Applications for the Citizen Police Academy are available online at West Chester Township’s official website, at the West Chester Administration Building and at the West Chester Police Department.

The administration building is located at 9113 Cincinnati-Dayton Road and the police department is located at 9577 Beckett Road, Suite 500.

Shamrock Shuffle

The Shamrock Shuffle is one of West Chester Township’s biggest events of the year and it takes place this Saturday morning. Photo provided.

Annual events at EnterTRAINment Junction and at The Square at Union Centre are a few of the many things to do in West Chester, Ohio, and Greater Cincinnati this weekend.

Friday

Chamber awards – The West Chester ▪ Liberty Chamber Alliance 2013 Chamber Awards celebration is this Friday at the Cincinnati Marriott North near The Square at Union Centre in West Chester. The event begins at 6 p.m. and requires a ticket to attend, which had to be purchased prior to the event.

Saturday

Shamrock Shuffle – One of West Chester’s signature events, the Shamrock Shuffle, will take place Saturday morning at The Square at Union Centre. The event will have more than 4,000 people participate and help more than 50 local charities. Event-day registration begins at 7 a.m.

Self-defense class – The West Chester Police Department will offer a free self-defense class from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. this Saturday. According to a release, the class is designed to encourage individuals to be prepared and confident when faced with a potentially dangerous confrontation. The class is offered at the police department on Beckett Road.

Free mini model engineering show – There will be a special two-day mini model engineering show at EnterTRAINment Junction this Saturday and Sunday. According to the show’s release, the exhibit features working miniatures built by model craftsmen from throughout the Midwest. Hours for the exhibit are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.

Winter farmers’ market – The weekly farmers’ market season is over, but the winter farmers’ market will be open this Saturday at The Square at Union Centre. This Saturday’s market will take place from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Additional winter farmers’ market sessions will take place April 6 and April 27. The market will take place, according to its website, rain, sleet, snow or shine.

Sunday

Mini model show continues – The free mini-model exhibit will be on display in EnterTRAINment Junction’s indoor Main Street area and in its Expo Center. Hours for the exhibit are noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.
