West Chester Hospital shows first profit

Posted by akiefaber February 16th, 2011, 2:17 pm Post a Comment

West Chester Hospital

West Chester Hospital, which lost $13.3 million last year, had its first profitable month, according to a recent article on Cincinnati.com. The article goes into detail on why the growth of the University of Cincinnati’s new health-care system, UC Health, hinges on the hospital located off Cox Road in West Chester.

Below is a portion of the Cincinnati.com article:

While University Hospital earned $27 million last year to buffer losses at West Chester and Drake, the entire UC Health system is relying on West Chester to provide more patients and more clinical chances for doctors.

“Its good location on a major highway in a growth area, as well as a favorable payer mix, suggest the hospital should be profitable and provide a good referral source to University Hospital,” Moody’s Investors Service analyst Lisa Martin wrote in her initial rating of UC Health.

The system also plays an outsized role in supporting the region’s health-care network, making West Chester’s growth even more critical.

UC Health pours nearly $50 million a year into UC Physicians and the University of Cincinnati’s College of Medicine, which has provided training for more than half of the region’s doctors.

University Hospital bears a safety-net burden for the entire region, as well as providing trauma services no other hospital provides.

If West Chester doesn’t grow that could hamstring UC Health and restrict indigent care in the urban core, UC leaders say.

The article provides additional information about West Chester Hospital and UC Health. To find out more, visit Cincinnati.com’s story, “West Chester Hospital makes 1st profit.”
