The farmers’ market season in West Chester Township began last Saturday and will take place every Saturday through October from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Square at Union Centre, 9285 Centre Pointe Drive.

The farmers’ market (picture above from previous market season) features all local vendors with produce and meats grown and raised locally and products made by hand. The availability of produce is dependent upon weather conditions, but shoppers can choose from a variety of foods including homemade breads and desserts, honey, jams and jellies.

West Chester to host last winter farmers’ market

West Chester Farmers’ Market

The final West Chester winter farmers’ market will take place this Saturday from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the Square at Union Centre. The regular farmers’ market season will begin May 18.

Once the regular season begins, the market will be open at the same location every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through mid-October.

Like in the summer, the winter farmers’ market features all local vendors with produce and meats grown and raised locally and products made by hand. The availability of produce is dependent upon weather conditions, but shoppers can choose from a variety of foods including homemade breads and desserts, honey, jams and jellies.

Shamrock Shuffle

Chamber awards – The West Chester ▪ Liberty Chamber Alliance 2013 Chamber Awards celebration is this Friday at the Cincinnati Marriott North near The Square at Union Centre in West Chester. The event begins at 6 p.m. and requires a ticket to attend, which had to be purchased prior to the event.

Saturday

Shamrock Shuffle – One of West Chester’s signature events, the Shamrock Shuffle, will take place Saturday morning at The Square at Union Centre. The event will have more than 4,000 people participate and help more than 50 local charities. Event-day registration begins at 7 a.m.

Self-defense class – The West Chester Police Department will offer a free self-defense class from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. this Saturday. According to a release, the class is designed to encourage individuals to be prepared and confident when faced with a potentially dangerous confrontation. The class is offered at the police department on Beckett Road.

Free mini model engineering show – There will be a special two-day mini model engineering show at EnterTRAINment Junction this Saturday and Sunday. According to the show’s release, the exhibit features working miniatures built by model craftsmen from throughout the Midwest. Hours for the exhibit are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.

There will be plenty to do in West Chester and Liberty Township this weekend. Such as high school football on Friday, where both Lakota teams are making a playoff push and will be playing Greater Miami Conference opponents, or celebrate the Halloween season at EnterTRAINment Junction, Niederman Family Farm and at the Great Pumpkin Fest at Keehner Park.

Friday night lights – Both Lakota East and Lakota West enter this week’s contest ranked in the top seven in The Cincinnati Enquirer Division I coaches’ poll. No. 3 Lakota West (7-0 overall, 4-0 in GMC) will be hosting Middletown (2-5 overall, 1-3 in the GMC), while No. 7 Lakota East (5-2 overall, 3-1 in GMC) will be at nearby No. 10 Mason (4-3 overall, 2-2 in GMC). Both games kickoff at 7:30 p.m.

Great Pumpkin FestGreat Pumpkin Fest – West Chester Township’s annual Great Pumpkin Fest will take place this Saturday, from 2 to 6 p.m. at Keehner Park. The fall festival includes family-friendly activities for children such as a variety of inflatable rides, crafts, pony rides and a petting zoo from Honey Hill Farm. The Great Pumpkin Fest will once again also feature a not-so-scary haunted trail and a costume contest.

Halloween attraction opens at EnterTRAINment – EnterTRAINment Junction in West Chester opened its newest holiday attraction, “Jack-O-Lantern Junction,” in late September. The attraction, which is family friendly, will be available every day through Oct. 31 to celebrate Halloween. The attraction features a walk-through trick-or-treat maze with ghosts, skeletons and cobwebs. It also features an indoor pumpkin patch, multiple treat stations and a talking pumpkin. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Art market returns with farmers’ market – The art market will be at the West Chester farmers’ market from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Square at Union Centre this Saturday. The farmers’ market features all local vendors with produce and meats grown and raised locally and products made by hand. This will be the last art market/farmers’ market of the season. The winter farmers’ market will return to The Square in 2012 on Nov. 17 and Dec. 15.

Niederman Family Farm fall activities – Every fall, Niederman Family Farm in Liberty Township has been a fall hot spot for local residents. The farm features a large corn maze and a long hayride, which stops halfway through at a pumpkin patch. In the evening, gather around a bon fire pit and cozy up with family and friends for stories, a weenie roast and s’mores. You can even take home fresh kettle corn, cotton candy, caramel apples and plenty other fall treats. The family farm is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturdays and from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays Check www.niedermanfamilyfarm.com for weekday hours.

Adopt a dog – More than 40 dogs will be up for adoption during a special event, which will also raise money for Carlie’s Animal Relief Foundation, at the Animal Hospital of West Chester this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event also welcomes dog owners by offering $10 on-site “while you wait” dog baths and nail trimming services, as well as on-site microchip insertion and online registration information for $25.

The weekly West Chester farmers’ market schedule will wrap up this Saturday, along with the art market from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Square at Union Centre.

After this Saturday, the farmers’ market will return to The Square in 2012 on Nov. 17 and Dec. 15.

Sure, downtown Cincinnati will be a happening place this weekend with Oktoberfest taking place and with the Cincinnati Reds attempting to clinch the National League Central Division, but there will also be things to do in West Chester and Liberty Township. Such as high school football on Friday, where both Lakota teams are in the top eight in the region in the OHSAA weekly computer rankings, or learning activities that teach participants how to fish or more about the night sky.

HalloweenArt market returns with farmers’ market – For the second time in September, the art market will be at the West Chester farmers’ market from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Square at Union Centre Saturday. The farmers’ market, which takes place at the same time every Saturday, features all local vendors with produce and meats grown and raised locally and products made by hand.

Children can learn how to fish – Liberty Township children can spend a morning learning how to fish during the Passport to Fish event this Saturday. The session runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Reserves Park, 5119 Grandin Ridge Dr., in the Reserves of Liberty subdivision. Hands on instruction on fishing will be presented to participants who are ages 10-15.

Gaze at the stars at Keehner Park – West Chester Township will be offering its final Star Gazing program of 2012 from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. this Saturday at Keener Park. The program is free to the public and will take place near the tennis courts at the park. The Cincinnati Astronomers Society will be providing their telescopes so that the public can view the stars and planets up close.
