Next Saturday, May 5, Lakota East golf program will be hosting its 14th annual golf scramble at Weatherwax Golf Course in Middletown. The event will begin with a shot gun start at approximately 1:45 p.m.

The scramble format includes four-person teams. The cost is $100 per player, which includes 18 holes of golf, cart, beverages, awards and dinner after the event. There is a 30-team limit.

Proceeds will benefit the golf teams at Lakota East.

Meanwhile, there will also be The Kristin Renneker Memorial Golf Outing at Walden Ponds Golf and Country Club in Hamilton Saturday, June 16. This event will support the Kristin Renneker Memorial Scholarship Fund.

The scholarship is named for Kristin Renneker, who died in an automobile accident during her senior year at Lakota in 1992.

According to the Community Foundation’s website, Renneker was an honor student, peer counselor and a two-sport varsity athlete (basketball and soccer). She was one of the tri-captains of her varsity basketball team, recipient of the Thunderbird Award in both sports and had earned a 3.6 grade point average.

“It is critical that we maintain Lakota’s scholarship fund traditions of the past, remind the community of the goodness that lived in Kristin’s heart and how the Lakota athletic boosters and the Renneker’s turned her tragic death into yearly blessings for future Lakota female athletes”, Lakota West head basketball coach Andy Fishman said.

The scholarship, which is held by the Community Foundation of West Chester/Liberty, awards two students – one from Lakota East High School and another from Lakota West High School – with a $2,000 scholarship. To date, the Scholarship fund has awarded more than $56,000 to 28 student athletes at Lakota East and Lakota West.

For more information about each event, contact the athletic departments at 513-759-8622 for Lakota East and at 513-682-4111 for Lakota West. Flyers and donor forms can also be found at Westfirebirds.com and at Eastthunderhawks.com (right-hand side). Sponsorship opportunities are also available for the Kristin Renneker Memorial Scholarship outing and can be made by contacting the Community Foundation at 513-874-5450.

Green has led the Firebirds in scoring in each of their first six tournaments of the season. Korey Ward and Lakota West girls advance to state

Posted by akiefaber October 14th, 2010, 12:15 am Post a Comment

Korey Ward Lakota West senior Korey Ward (photo) posted a 3-under-par 69 in the boys’ Southwest District Golf Tournament at Weatherwax Golf Course in Middletown, Oct. 13, to qualify for the state tournament. On the girls’ side, Lakota West finished fourth as a team and also qualified for the state tournament, which will take place Oct. 22-23 in Columbus.

As a team, Lakota West actually tied Centerville for third place with a score of 305. However, the Elks won the tiebreaker and took the last qualifying spot in the state tournament.

Greater Miami Conference champions Lakota East posted a 312 and finished in a tie for fifth place.

In order for an individual to qualify for the state tournament, they would have to either be on one of the top-three finishing teams (Moeller, St. Xavier or Centerville) or post one of the top-three scores out of the pool of players not on those teams.

Ward’s 69 was good enough for the first open spot. However, Lakota East junior Ben Gallow (73) and Lakota West sophomore Marshall Stretch (74) just missed the cut.

The girls’ Southwest District Golf Tournament allowed the top-four teams and top-four individuals not on those teams to qualify.

Lakota West, led by senior Ashley Jeffers’ 78, qualified with a team score of 320. The Firebirds finished five strokes behind second-place and GMC champions Mason. Lakota West also finished 12 strokes ahead of fifth-place Kings.
