Proposed YMCA in West Chester – The largest township in Ohio could finally be getting its first YMCA. The Lakota Family YMCA, which has a location in Liberty Township, proposed that the new Y be built in the heart of West Chester Township, near the corner of Union Centre Boulevard and Beckett Road. The West Chester YMCA will include a two-story, 100,000 square-foot building, and a 65,000 square-foot pool and deck area, as well as an athletic field.
Lakota East football preview – WestChesterBuzz.com looked ahead to the fall and the 2013 football season. Last season, Lakota East made its first postseason appearance and won its first playoff game in school history. Key 2013 home games include Colerain on Sept. 20 and Lakota West on Nov. 1. The season kicks off at home against Western Hills on Aug. 30.
Lakota West football preview – In addition to Lakota East, WestChesterBuzz.com posted the 2013 Lakota West football schedule last week. In 2012, the Firebirds won their first eight games before losing their last two and missing the postseason. This season, West will open on Aug. 31 against Winton Woods at Fairfield. The Firebirds home schedule is highlighted with a matchup against Sycamore on Sept. 27.
Local student: Paying for college is terrifying – Jake Geers, a sophomore at Ohio State, has aspirations of attending law school. Now, the 2012 graduate of Lakota West doesn’t even know how he is going to pay for his undergrad schooling after a 2007 law that cut student loan rates expired last Monday and caused rates on federally subsidized Stafford loans to double from 3.4 to 6.8 percent.
Call center to close – Walgreens has plans to close its Medicare Part B call center facility in West Chester, 9025 Centre Pointe Drive. The closure, which is expected to be permanent, will kill 121 local jobs. The call center will begin laying off workers this month. The layoffs should be completed by Oct. 31.
Speed limits of 70 mph debut – Ohio motorists: Get ready to go faster. New 70-mile-per-hour speed limits took effect last week in Ohio. A new law raised the speed limit from 65 mph to 70 mph on sections of interstate outside Ohio’s urban areas.
WOLF program begins – West Chester’s annual WOLF (World of Land, Forest and Friends) program began last Wednesday and will continue each Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the deer shelter at Keehner Park until its last session on Aug. 7. The WOLF program is offered each summer for children ages 5-to-14 and focuses attention on a specific topic related to nature and the environment.
