‘Go Dog. Go!’ coming Miami VOALC Saturday

Miami University’s Voice of America Learning Center in West Chester will host a free performance of Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park’s production of P.D. Eastman’s children’s book “Go, Dog. Go!” at 3 p.m. Saturday.

The performance is part of the Playhouse’s Off the Hill series, made possible by The Robert and Adele Schiff Family Foundation. ArtsWave Presents, a program bringing musicians, dancers, actors and artists from Cincinnati’s arts organizations into neighborhoods for public performances, also provides support.

Jekyll and Hyde show coming to Miami VOA on Saturday

The themes in Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic horror novel are explored in the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park’s Off the Hill production of The Traveling Jekyll and Hyde Show, by playwright Russell Davis.

The free public performance takes place at 3 p.m. this Saturday at the Miami University Voice of America Learning Center in West Chester.

This show tells the story of a tiny touring theatre valiantly attempting to tell the story of the infamous scientist who learns to split his good side from his evil one.

Unfortunately, the three actresses are sabotaged at every turn by a domineering director.

As the women in the company slowly take control of the story, they also learn to take control of their lives.

The Learning Center is located at 7847 VOA Park Drive, at the corner of Cox Road and VOA Park Drive, in West Chester.

Miami’s VOALC to host shopping event with Santa

Santa in Miami hoodieThe Miami University Voice of America Learning Center will host a special holiday shopping event that will feature Santa Claus and plenty of Miami University gifts. The holiday shopping event will take place this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Learning Center’s lobby.

This will be the fourth year that the Miami Bookstore and Alumni Association will be setting up the special holiday shopping event at the Voice of America Learning Center.

Santa will at the event and available for free family pictures from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

‘Fibers of the Soul’ exhibition opens Sunday at VOALC

“Fibers of the Soul,” an exhibition of the work of West Chester artist Carole Gary Staples, opens with a free public reception from 2 to 5 p.m. this Sunday at Miami University’s Voice of America Learning Center in West Chester.

Staples, a native of Pittsburgh, has been designing with fabric and creating art for over thirty years. The exhibition, which will be on display at the Learning Center through Jan. 30, 2013, is from her collection of art quilts and fiber arts.

Her works are part of several touring exhibitions, including “In Celebration of Faith Ringgold” from the City College of New York, and “Textural Rhythms: Quilting the Jazz Traditions,” from the National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center.

Regionally, Staples’ creations have been part of exhibitions at the Middletown Art Center, Kennedy Heights Art Center, and Northern Kentucky University. She has also been featured in the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts “Migrations of the African Diaspora” exhibition, as well as “Quilts for Change” at the Cintas Center at Xavier University.

Her training began at a very early age when she was selected to attend the prestigious Tam O’ Shanter art program at Carnegie Mellon University. She continued her artistic training at the University of Pittsburgh, and graduated with her Bachelor of Arts degree from Seton Hill University.

The exhibition will be on display can be viewed from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday.

Photo exhibition opens at VOA Learning Center Sunday

Photographs from 31 members of the West Chester Photo Club will be on display at Miami University’s Voice of America Learning Center through Nov. 14, beginning with a free public reception from 2 to 5 p.m. this Sunday.

The exhibition, Looking Out Looking In, is a collection of more than 60 works by photo club members. The display is a unique opportunity to see the world and our corner of it through their eyes and lenses.

Founded ten years ago, the West Chester Photo Club today has 50 members.

During their monthly meetings a photo activity is presented and reviewed, a process the club calls OPUS (Our Photos Under Scrutiny), an opportunity for sharing ideas and perspectives on members’ work.

In addition, the club hosts weekly “Scoot N Shoot” activities every Thursday where members meet and travel to a predetermined location for group shooting.

The club’s exhibition at the VOALC will be available for viewing from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday.

Miami University’s regionals announce Aug. 1 deadline

For students of Miami University’s regional campuses to attend classes when they begin Aug. 20, they must have all of their paperwork turned in by Aug. 1.

According to Michael Pratt, associate provost and dean of the regional campuses, the deadline is designed to allow incoming students to work with Miami regional staff to complete the process of admission, financial aid, transferring credits from other institutions, academic advising and course registration before classes begin.

“That time between the deadline and the start of classes allows us to work individually with incoming students to ensure everything is in place, and to help give them the best possible start to their Miami experience,” Pratt said.

Miami University’s regional locations include Miami University Hamilton, Miami University Middletown, Voice of America Learning Center in West Chester and Greentree Health Science Academy in Middletown.

Miami University to host informational expo at VOA campus

Miami University’s Regional Campuses will host an informational expo from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Voice of America Learning Center in West Chester.

The expo will provide the opportunity to meet faculty, staff, students, and to explore new degree programs. There will also be information available about scholarships and financial aid, online and hybrid courses, the honors program, athletics and student activities.

Miami University’s regional locations include Miami Hamilton, Miami Middletown, the Voice of America Learning Center and the Greentree Health Science Academy.

The deadline for fall semester applications at Miami’s regional locations has been moved to Aug. 1 this year. To register, visit www.regionals.muohio.edu/expo.

VOA Learning Center to offer summer video camps

Teaming up with Media Bridges Cincinnati, Miami University’s Voice of America Learning Center has created a two-week video academy for children and teenagers ages 8-18. The video camp will take place July 9-20 and will cover three different video genres.

The animation camp will be held July 9-13. The camp will be held in two sessions – from 9 a.m. until noon for ages 8-13 and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. for ages 14-18.

During this camp, students will produce their own short animated films, as well as learn about stop-motion, traditional and computer 3D animation, script writing, storyboarding, whiteboard animation, LEGO & 3D modeling/animation and miniature set building. Students will also be able to explore and discuss animation and animated films.

The video production camp will take place July 16-20 from 9 a.m. until noon and is open to children and teenagers, ages 8-13.

During the video production camp, students will produce their own short movie, as well as take part in pre-production, script writing, storyboarding, lighting, sound, and other aspects of production. They will explore different genres of film and video, including video journalism, independent film and TV show production.

The third camp will focus on classic horror movies. It is designed for ages 14-18 and will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. July 16-20.

At this camp, students will be able to make a short horror movie, as well as learn the details of horror film production. They will also engage in script writing, storyboarding, lighting, sound, make-up, special effects and mixing fake blood. Students will also analyze horror films and have in-depth discussions about the genre.

At the end of each camp, family and friends are invited to a special viewing party to see the newly created works.

Things to do in West Chester this weekend – meet Pete Rose

There will be plenty to do in the West Chester area this weekend, including the opportunity to meet a pair Cincinnati sports legends, a farmers’ market and a chance to gaze at the stars. However, there is a chance for showers and thunderstorms for Saturday’s outdoor events.

Meet Rose and Anderson – Cincinnati sports legends Pete Rose and Ken Anderson will both host autograph sessions this Saturday afternoon at rival sports memorabilia shops. The Rose signing session will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Sports Gallery, 7967 Cincinnati-Dayton Road in West Chester, while Anderson will be hosting his autograph session from 2 to 4 p.m. at Advanced Sports Marketing. 7043 Yankee Road in Liberty Township.

West Chester Farmers Market

The weekly West Chester Farmers’ Market returns to the Square at Union Centre next Saturday, May 12. During the winter months, West Chester hosts a farmers’ market about once a month. Photo provided.

Farmers’ market – The farmers’ market season in West Chester Township is on its way back. There is only one winter farmers’ market remaining before the weekly West Chester Farmers’ and Art Market will open for the 2012 season May 12 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Just like the weekly farmers’ market, the last winter market will take place at The Square at Union Centre. The winter market will take place this Saturday from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Gaze at the stars – West Chester Township will be offering its first Star Gazing program of 2012 this Saturday at 9 p.m. at Keener Park. The program is free to the public and will take place near the tennis courts at the park. The Dayton and Cincinnati Astronomers Society will be providing their telescopes so that the public can view the stars and planets up close.

National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day – Law enforcement agencies across the region are participating in the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Drug Take-Back Day. On Saturday, dozens of police agencies in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky are providing sites for community members to drop off expired, unused or unwanted prescription and over-the-counter drugs. Drugs can be turned in 10 a.m.-2 p.m., with no questions asked. The local drop-off location will be at West Chester Presbyterian Church, 8930 Cincinnati-Dayton Road.

Arbor Day and Earth Day celebration – Mueller Parker Funeral Home, 6791 Tylersville Road, is hosting a community Arbor Day and Earth Day event from 9 a.m. to noon this Saturday. This community event will provide opportunities to recycle and to remember loved ones with plants.

Free family theatre – A free performance of River Rat and Cat, a comic tale for the entire family, will be presented at Miami University’s Voice of America Learning Center 3 p.m. Sunday. A production of Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park’s Off the Hill education series, River Rat and Cat is a comedy about friendship and cooperation.
