Local athlete featured in Cincinnati Children’s ad

Posted by akiefaber August 2nd, 2012, 1:37 pm Post a Comment

This summer, Cincinnati Children’s has been airing an advertisement featuring 2011 Lakota West graduate and now Michigan volleyball star Lexi Dannemiller, who went Children’s for rehab on her knees.

Lexi’s mom, Maria, who was also interviewed for the commercial said that there were two production trucks full of equipment and a 12-to-14-person crew at her house for the filming.

“It was pretty intense,” Maria said. “It took about five hours, maybe more.”

Overall, Dannemiller had three surgeries on her knees before her freshman year at Michigan.

The program at Cincinnati Children’s mainly focused on preventing future injuries.

After the program, Dannemiller went on to receive Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Week honors four times, was second in the Big Ten in assists and was named to the Big Ten Freshman Team last fall.

“You can describe her as almost a gym rat, but on top of that she is willing to train her body to overcome injuries,” Maria said. “She puts everything she has into it.

“That is who she is. She just basically likes to work hard. I couldn’t put it any other way. She amazes me because I would have given up.”

Lakota West volleyball stars face off in Big Ten clash

Posted by akiefaber October 12th, 2011, 9:49 am Post a Comment

Liz McMahon

After playing on the same volleyball team since the third grade, 2011 Lakota West graduates Liz McMahon and Lexi Dannemiller will see a familiar face on the opposite side of net Wednesday when No. 1 Illinois (17-0 overall, 6-0 in the Big Ten Conference) hosts No. 20 Michigan (14-4 overall, 2-4 in the Big Ten) at 8 p.m.

“It will be really fun to see her across the net and talk to her a little bit if we have any time,” said Dannemiller, who is a freshman at the University of Michigan. “I have been looking forward to it. I have played with a lot of players in the Big Ten, but this will be the first time that I will actually be able to play against someone who I grew up with.”

It was back home in West Chester, where Lexi’s mother, Maria, showed a 5-foot-4 fourth grader named Elizabeth McMahon how the game of volleyball could be fun.

“It was hard, because of my height. I hadn’t really grown into my body yet. She just made it fun and I think that was really important because I might have gone on a different path if I didn’t enjoy it,” McMahon said of Lexi’s mom, who coached Lexi and Liz from the third to the sixth grade.

>>>HIGH SCHOOL PHOTOS OF LEXI AND LIZ<<<

Now at the University of Illinois, the 6-foot-6 McMahon said that she is “enjoying every second” of being a part of the nation’s top-ranked Division I program.

McMahon’s new teammates are also enjoying her company, as the freshman has excelled in the last two matches against No. 24 Ohio State and No. 9 Penn State. In those wins, she totaled 25 kills and seven block assists.

“For her size, she is one of the more mobile players I have seen,” Illinois head coach Kevin Hambly said. “Her size allows her to go over players, but I think as she develops more strength and really learns how to approach the net and jump – she is going to be untouchable at times. With those kinds of physical tools, who knows what her ceiling is.”

Lexi Dannemiller Meanwhile, when Dannemiller enrolled at Michigan, she had to battle junior Catherine Yager for the opportunity to start at setter after four-time All-American and Michigan’s all-time assists leader Lexi Zimmerman graduated.

“I don’t think there is a harder position in the game to transition to from the high school and club level to college than setter,” Michigan head coach Mark Rosen said. “There are so many decisions that need to be made, the pace is so much faster and physicality of game is so much bigger.”

After earning the starting job, Dannemiller has produced and is currently second in the Big Ten in assists and has also been named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week three times.

“It is a true testament of the great job that she has done as a young player to come in and move into a starting role, which has allowed us to be successful,” Rosen said.

With the match being televised on the Big Ten Network, many people back in West Chester will also be able to follow the former Lakota West stars.

“It being on the Big Ten Network, I think it will be fun for a lot of my extended family and friends. Even the coaches, who have coached the two of us in the past, are going to be able to watch it,” McMahon said. “It should be an awesome match to see.”

One of those coaches that will be watching will be their former high school coach.

“This is going to be a great Big Ten match,” Lakota West head coach Tracey Kornau said.

“Not only did they play their entire Plains (junior high) career together, but they were four-year varsity starters at West and played on the same club team all those years. This is the first time in their volleyball careers they are not on the same side of the net. It is exciting for me is to see both of them play at such an elite level for such great teams.”

Lifelong Lakota teammates to be Big Ten rivals next fall

Posted by akiefaber December 9th, 2010, 7:06 pm Post a Comment

Ever since the third grade, Liz McMahon and Lexi Dannemiller have been teammates on the volleyball court. However, next fall, the camaraderie between the two Lakota West teammates will transform into a unique Big Ten rivalry when McMahon starts her career at the University of Illinois and Dannemiller enrolls at the University of Michigan.

Liz McMahon “They have been teammates since elementary school playing CYO, junior high, high school and club together,” Lakota West head volleyball coach Tracey Kornau said. “They know each other’s strengths and weaknesses. It will be an intense rivalry, but a lot of fun for the fans back in West Chester.“

>>>PHOTO GALLERY OF LEXI AND LIZ<<<

It was back in West Chester where a 5-foot-4 fourth grader named Elizabeth McMahon learned how the game of volleyball could be fun. Teaching her that was her coach Maria Dannemiller.

“She just worked with me on being patient,” McMahon (photo above) said of Lexi’s mom, who coached Lexi and Liz from the third to the sixth grade. “It was hard, because of my height. I hadn’t really grown into my body yet. She just made it fun and I think that was really important because I might have gone on a different path if I didn’t enjoy it.”

On their path to the Lakota West High School team, Lexi and Liz developed a strong chemistry, Dannemiller was the setter and McMahon, who grew into her current 6-foot-6 frame, was the finisher.

“It has been so comforting to play with Liz because she has played on almost every team that I have played on,” Dannemiller said. “We have a good connection, I know what ball to set her and where she is going to be.”

It was this connection that helped Lakota West post a 21-3 overall record during the fall of 2009. Their play attracted the attention of the NCAA’s top collegiate programs. (more…)

PrepVolleyball.com ranks Lakota West No. 27 in national preseason rankings

Posted by akiefaber August 19th, 2010, 11:00 am Post a Comment

The Lakota West volleyball program was recently recognized by PrepVolleyball.com, which ranked the Firebirds No. 27 in its national preseason rankings.

Lakota West, under head coach Tracey Kornau, finished the 2009 season with a 21-3 overall record and a Greater Miami Conference title before losing to Mount Notre Dame in the postseason.

The team returns eight volleyball players from that ’09 team including two of the state’s top 2011 recruits in seniors Lexi Dannemiller (5-foot-11) and Liz McMahon (6-foot-7). Both players have already verbally committed to Big Ten schools: Dannemiller to the University of Michigan and McMahon (photo) to the University of Illinois.

Other top returning players include junior Mel Stewart, sophomore Annie Bierman, junior Corri Muha, senior Taylor Anderson, senior Shannon Breen and senior Morgan Jones.

The Firebirds graduated two seniors last school year in outside hitter Michelle Fehr and setter Kristie Kaaa, but has two new promising players in sophomore Rachel Cogan and freshman Alli Muha.

According to Kornau, Lakota West’s strength is that it features “veteran players with high expectations.” Kornau also said that she is “very optimistic” about the 2010 season.
