A West Chester woman has pleaded guilty to stealing more than $23,000 from her Mason employer

Posted by akiefaber April 16th, 2013, 4:11 pm Post a Comment

Rachel Richardson reports:

Marcie “Allison” Denney, 37, pleaded guilty Friday to one count of theft, a fourth-degree felony, and four fifth-degree felony counts of forgery. She originally faced one count of theft and nine counts of forgery.

Between August and November last year, Denney forged 25 company checks from her employer, JKrete, a Mason company specializing in traditional and decorative concrete installation, totaling more than $23,000.

Denney cashed company checks and wrote checks out to a friend, Christine Inman. Inman, 30, of West Chester, has been charged with one count of receiving stolen property and one count of forgery, both fifth-degree felonies.

Company owner Bruce Mills said Denney first started at a temporary worker in January and was hired on in April as an office receptionist. In that role, she handled incoming checks and outgoing bills.

Suspicions were first raised after Inman allegedly attempted to cash a company check and a cautious 5/3 Bank teller called him to verify the signature, Mills said. He froze the account and discovered other forged checks by Denney. Mason Police arrested her at work the next day.

“She’s a serious con artist,” he said. “She is very sneaky, conniving and manipulative, and she will do it again and again.”

Mills says he felt betrayed by news of the crime. The company had loaned Denney $800 to get back on her feet after she says she was kicked out of her home by a roommate, he said.

The theft also came as a large financial blow to the start-up company, which he founded two years ago and has six employees.

Mills said that he plans to keep a tighter rein on the company’s checkbook in the future.

“You have to be really careful about who you’re hiring and who you’re giving access to checks,” he said. “Who in the world would think that someone you’ve helped and are paying each week is robbing you blind?”

Denney had been released on her own recognizance, but was taken into custody earlier this month when she failed to comply with the rules of Warren County Pretrial Services, court documents show.

She faces up to 60 months in jail and a $12,500 fine when she is sentenced May 24 in Warren County Common Pleas Court.

Lakota East students are in trouble for stealing anti-Lakota levy signs

Posted by akiefaber October 10th, 2010, 11:25 am Post a Comment

According to WCPO and other news sources, the Butler County Sheriff’s Office has cited two Lakota East students for stealing anti-Lakota levy signs in Liberty Township.

WCPO was told by deputies that the teens were caught Thursday night taking the signs from outside a house in the 5000 block of Cincinnati-Dayton Road. Deputies also told WCPO reporter Carole Rawlins that a 17-year-ol girl and an 18-year-old male will face theft, complicity and trespassing charges.

In an story written earlier this week by the Pulse Journal, a member of the anti-Lakota levy side told the paper that he filed a police report with the Butler County Sheriff’s Office, claiming that 50-to-100 signs have been stolen. He also told the newspaper that his opposing side of the levy hadn’t taken any of the pro-levy signs.

However, according to another source quoted in the story – the pro-levy supporters have lost nearly 500 of their signs, but has not filed a police report.

At this time of year, many signs are stolen, moved or vandalized.

Lakota has a 10-year, non-continuing, 7.9-mill emergency levy (Issue 2) on the November ballot. The levy will cost approximately $242 per year per $100,000 home valuation.

Thefts from cars becoming a problem in West Chester

Posted by akiefaber August 10th, 2010, 3:14 pm Post a Comment

The West Chester Police Department recently released an awareness bulletin about 12 recent thefts during Aug. 5-7 from parked cars throughout the township.

In the 12 cases, the items were stolen from unlocked vehicles that were parked on driveways, streets or in open garages. Items that were stolen include sporting goods, GPS units, electronic devices, purses, cameras, wallets and medication.

The bulletin states, residents are strongly encouraged to remove personal property from their vehicles while they are parked outside. Even after removing the property, residents should also secure their vehicles. Securing your garage door(s) at night is another issue that should be addressed. Many thefts from autos have occurred from unlocked vehicles that are parked in a garage, but the garage door was left standing open.

Please report anything suspicious to the West Chester Police Department at 513-777-2231. Any information about these thefts should be directed to the department’s public affairs unit at 513-759-7280 or to the Crime Tip Hotline at 513-759-7272.
