Thomas Boat, dean of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and vice president for health affairs, will replace previously scheduled speaker Santa Jeremy Ono at this month’s West Chester ▪ Liberty Chamber Alliance’s luncheon on Tuesday.

Ono, who began serving as UC’s president after Greg Williams’ sudden resignation Aug. 21, was originally scheduled to be the speaker but canceled to participate in meetings in Columbus that day, according to Boat.

Boat became the 49th dean in the medical college’s nearly 200-year history on July 1, 2011.

“I am very happy to participate in the Sept. 11th West Chester ▪ Liberty Chamber Alliance luncheon to discuss the unique and significant role that the University of Cincinnati in general and, specifically, its College of Medicine plays in our region’s health,” Boat said. “The West Chester and Liberty Townships area is a vibrant, important community and is home to UC Health’s University Pointe medical campus.”

The Luncheon will also feature the West Chester and Liberty Township fire departments cooking and serving at the Chamber’s traditional “Chili Luncheon.”

The luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. at Wetherington Golf and Country Club in West Chester. Reservations can be made online at www.TheChamberAlliance.com or by calling 513-777-3600. The cost to attend is $27 for members and $50 for guests.

Ono began serving as UC’s president after Greg Williams’ sudden resignation Aug. 21. According to The Cincinnati Enquirer, if Ono doesn’t become the permanent choice, any new president probably would not start until next summer at the earliest.

Ono first arrived at UC in 2010, serving two years as the senior vice president for academic affairs and provost. In that role, Ono led the development of an academic master plan aligned to the university’s strategic plan.

He also serves as professor of pediatrics within UC’s College of Medicine and professor of biology in the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences. Ono’s principal research interests focus on transcriptional regulation in the human immune system, mechanisms of mast cell dependent inflammation on the ocular surface and the immune component of age-related macular degeneration.

Prior to UC, Ono served at Emory University as vice provost for academic initiatives and deputy to the provost and then senior vice provost for undergraduate academic affairs. At Emory, he also served as a professor in the department of ophthalmology at the School of Medicine.

Dr. Ono earned his PhD at McGill University and his BA at the University of Chicago. His training in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Harvard was supported by a Helen Hay Whitney Foundation Fellowship.

The luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. at Wetherington Golf and Country Club in West Chester. Reservations can be made online at www.TheChamberAlliance.com or by calling 513-777-3600. The cost to attend is $27 for members and $50 for guests.
