Marlin & Ray’s Seafood Bar & Gill closes in West Chester

Posted by akiefaber January 10th, 2013, 4:37 pm Post a Comment

Marlin and Ray’s in Voice of America Center in West Chester has closed, according to The Cincinnati Enquirer’s Polly Campbell.

Marlin & Ray’s It opened in early December of 2011, after Ruby Tuesday Inc. converted its old West Chester Ruby Tuesday location, by the intersection of Cox and Tylersville roads, into a new seafood restaurant.

When it opened, the West Chester Marlin & Ray’s was the company’s sixth converted Ruby Tuesday location. At that time, there was one other location in Ohio (Hilliard), one in Tennessee (Maryville), one in Virginia (Manassas) and two in Georgia (Acworth and Lithonia).

Since then, Marlin & Ray’s locations have opened a total of seven additional locations in Southeast states.

“West Chester is a great market,” assistant general manager Ian Murray said just before the West Chester restaurant opened. “If you look around, there a ton of businesses, a solid source of income from the families we are looking for and most importantly the amount of traffic that is coming through here. It is just a perfect location.”

According to an Associated Press story, Ruby Tuesday, Inc. has posted a second-quarter loss and is selling the entire chain, along with 24 Ruby Tuesday locations.

When the West Chester store opened, the company had high hopes for its seafood restaurant idea.

“We don’t know were the idea is going to go from here. If this thing takes off and blows up, we could sprout out across the country,” Murray said in December of 2011.

New Persian restaurant in West Chester

Posted by akiefaber December 3rd, 2012, 9:09 am Post a Comment

Polly Campbell reports:

Persian cooking, though it has some things in common with the Arabic cooking of the rest of the Middle East, is a distinctive cuisine to itself. Lots of herbs, sweet-sour flavors, saffron, different ways of cooking rice, roasted meat and fish are all part of Persian, or Iranian cuisine.

Persian Nights is a new restaurant on Cincinnati-Dayton Road that serves this complex and delicious cuisine. It’s owned by the Mostofi family, with Mehrdad Mostofi in the kitchen as chef. He previously owned the Caspian in Symmes Township. Son-in-law Tony Abbas is the general manager. He said this restaurant has more in the way of atmosphere and polished service than the Caspian did.

On the menu: must-o-khiar, a homemade yogurt with cucumber and mint, kookoo sabzi, an egg and herb dish, barley soup, shirazi salad, koobideh: kabobs of seasoned ground beef, chicken or lamb, and nightly specials often a polo dish, much like a pilaf. There are also lunch specials for $5-7.

Persian Nights is located at 7967 Cincinnati-Dayton Road and can be reached at 513-777-4111. It is open from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 11 a.m.-10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Photos of the new Smoke and Grits in West Chester

Posted by akiefaber July 1st, 2011, 11:13 am Post a Comment

Smoke and Grits Smoke and Grits Smoke and Grits

One of the area’s newest restaurants recently showed off a few of its signature dishes to Metromix Cincinnati and WestChesterBuzz.com. Smoke and Grits, which is located at 9104 Cox Road in West Chester, specializes in southern cuisine.

Davidson Muldrow, who was unhappy with his career in corporate sales, created the restaurant.

“When I lost my parents in 2009, it made me realize more than anything that life is short,” Muldrow said. “You have one chance at life and you have to go ahead and do what you want to do, while you are still here. So, I decided to jump into the deep end and start a restaurant.”

The restaurant’s menu features smoked pulled pork, ribs, sausage and chicken. It also features southern fried chicken, chicken wings, cornbread, collard greens and numerous dishes featuring grits (such as southern seasoned grits, cheese grits, fish and grits, shrimp and grits and smoked sausage and grits).

On Saturday and Sunday, Smoke and Grits will also feature a brunch buffet with eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, waffles, pancakes and grits.

Many of the recipes at Smoke and Grits are from Muldrow, who learned how to cook when his mother “grew tired of cooking for four kids.” He also credits his father, who used to make similar food on special occasions.

Currently, the restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday. It is also open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday through Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
