Sue Kiesewetter reports:
It’s time to get down and dirty at this year’s Mud Mania at Rentschler Forest Preserve in nearby Fairfield Township.
New to this year’s event is a mud slide and rope climb as part of the obstacle course.
“We use the sledding to start the course,’’ said Julie Edmond, special events coordinator. “You slide down the hill into the mud to start the obstacle course – it’s one of the elements.”
Another new element is a rope climb. They join tires, a mud pit, and other elements. Adults, teens and older children do a double course with side by side features to get more people through in a timely manner.
A separate area allows children ages 3-6 to go down a slide to start a separate course that includes a sand pile among the features.
Families can bring a lunch and eat under the trees. Water, sports drinks and granola bars will be available for purchase.
“It’s a great outdoor event that gets your heart pumping,’’ Edmond said. “It’s family friendly, good, clean fun for kids but you do get dirty.”
There will be a rinse area to remove initial layer of mud from clothing and skin.
There is no registration needed for the foray into mud at the preserve, 5701 Reigart Road. Meet at the Cummins Shelter. It will be open from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
A motor vehicle permit is needed to enter the park. Permits are $5 daily or $10 for an annual, movable, hangtag that can be purchased at the park.
