The little moments matter during breast cancer battle

Posted by akiefaber September 10th, 2012, 7:00 am Post a Comment

Liberty Township mom honored today during breast cancer awareness event

Breast cancer survivors Jen Anderson and her mother, Roz Mathie, have both battled breast cancer this summer and have both undergone double mastectomies. Anderson, who went through chemo from March to August, found out she had no no detectable cancer Wednesday, Sept. 5. Photo taken by Adam Kiefaber on Sept. 7, 2012 in Mathie’s backyard in West Chester Township.

Jen Anderson dotes on her two young daughters.

The Lakota High School and Miami University graduate earlier this year wanted to remember her youngest, Greta, as a baby. She also wanted to remember how her 4-year-old, Maren, described the most random of events in her life as “the best, ever.”

The Liberty Township woman had to document it, so she jotted down a few quick posts on her WordPress blog, andersonfamilyzoo.wordpress.com. She detailed what she loved most about her “normal” life.

Three months went by before Anderson wrote a much longer post this March. She blogged about being at the doctor’s office, about being told that she had breast cancer and about how her hair was going to fall out due to future chemotherapy treatment.

“It was very surreal. I couldn’t believe that I was normal five minutes ago and now I have such bad cancer that the doctor is crying,” Anderson said.

The community wants to honor Anderson – who played volleyball at the old Lakota High School and was an assistant coach at Lakota West and Sycamore. She has been invited to perform the coin toss today during Lakota West’s varsity volleyball match in connection with the school’s annual Volley for the Cure event, which has raised more than $40,000 in the past five years for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Events like these, which occur throughout the year but particularly during Breast Cancer Awareness month in October, play a role in helping people like Anderson survive and continue their lives.

“My cancer was so advanced that they threw every tool in the toolbox at it,” she said. “Every single one of those tools were available because other women, who have been diagnosed, have come before me and because of the research dollars that have gone into looking at so many avenues.

“I truly believe without every single component in that gauntlet, my cancer would have been a death sentence.”

Lakota West’s Volley for the Cure will feature free games, prizes, music, raffles, silent auctions, mystery boxes, split the pot, a quilt raffle and other activities that will be held before, during and after volleyball matches.

In addition, staff from the Atrium Medical Center in Middletown will be on hand to answer any questions about breast cancer and on how to help increase breast cancer awareness.

The matches will begin at 4:30 p.m. with the freshman game. The junior varsity will play at 5:30 p.m., the faculty at 6:30 p.m. and the varsity at 7:30 p.m.

The games are a sign some normality is returning to Anderson, who went from stay-at-home mom to what she called a “Resident Badass Cancer Fighter.”

“Since the diagnosis, the little moments mattered that much more because they might be your last – every moment might be your last moment, every day might be your last day. That is how I am trying to live because it allows yourself to be your best self every single day.”

Using her family as motivation, Anderson was able to push though learning that her mother, Roz Mathie, also had breast cancer. Anderson endured six months of chemotherapy at Christ Hospital, countless doctor appointments and a double mastectomy on Aug. 30 at Good Samaritan Hospital. Today, she has no detectable cancer.

“It is truly a miracle and a testimony to the medical technology out there, as well as a testimony to God’s grace,” Anderson said.

Anderson is living each day to the fullest – a credo that she shares frequently on her blog and recently in person with the Lakota West volleyball team.

“I love that I was able to speak to the team and be a positive woman role model for them,” she said.

“Cancer is a side note. I want them to be proactive about their own breast health, but I also want them to be strong, smart, independent women. I feel like that is where you have to start.”

Lakota West to host Volley for the Cure event Sept. 10

Posted by akiefaber August 30th, 2012, 10:47 am Post a Comment

The Lakota West volleyball program will host its annual Volley for the Cure event Monday, Sept. 10. In the past five years, the event has raised more than $40,000 and has sold more than 10,000 Volley for the Cure t-shirts for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

The event will feature free games, prizes, music, raffles, silent auctions, mystery boxes, split the pot, a quilt raffle and other activities that will be held before, during and after volleyball matches. The matches will begin at 4:30 p.m. with the freshman game. The junior varsity match will begin at 5:30 p.m., a faculty match will take place at 6:30 p.m. and the varsity match is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.

During the event, staff from the Atrium Medical Center will be on hand to answer any questions about breast cancer and on how to help increase breast cancer awareness.

The teams will be honoring those affected by breast cancer by placing their names on individual volleyballs, which will be displayed on Main Street. The names will be announced at the game.

Local survivors and families of those who have passed due to breast cancer are invited to the event. If you, or someone you know, has been affected by breast cancer and would like to attend, please contact Jody Googins at jody.googins@lakotaonline.com for complimentary tickets and Volley for the Cure t-shirts.

Lakota West senior Emma Huddleston designed the t-shirts, which will be sold in gray and pink for $5. The student’s design will be sold at similar events this fall at high schools throughout Ohio. Huddleston joins fellow Lakota West students Corri Muha (designed 2011 logo) and Greg Osinski (designed 2010 logo), who have also had their logo designs selected for this honor.

The varsity volleyball team is scheduled to play Beavercreek during the event.

Butler County Fair features expanded space

Posted by akiefaber July 22nd, 2012, 9:29 pm Post a Comment

PHOTOS FROM THE 2011 BUTLER COUNTY FAIR

Sue Kiesewetter reports

A new H-shaped complex will provide display space for everything from photography to pies and pigs at this year’s Butler County Fair.

The county’s 162nd fair opened its doors Sunday for a seven-day run that includes a demolition derby, tractor pulls, a rodeo, rides, corn hole, exhibits and lots of carnival food to munch on.

But perhaps the most noticeable change from last year is the addition of larger, modern display space. The 28,500 square foot complex replaces the secretary’s office and art hall – dating back to 1907 – that were demolished last August.

The project is estimated to cost $1.7 million, of which just over $1 million has been borrowed. Other dollars have come from the fair’s general fund.

The two buildings that make up the legs of the ‘H’ measure 60-feet wide by 200 feet long, said Dan Martin, fair secretary. They are connected by a building with restrooms, a serving kitchen and foyer. The restrooms and serving kitchen have not yet been completed.

Once finished this fall, the space can be used as banquet halls for wedding and other revenue-generating events, Martin said.

The west wing of the complex will be used for junior fair judging and events while the west wing will house open class displays – arts and crafts, farm produce, fine arts and more.

There are about 1,700 children and teens participating in the junior fair, bringing 1,658 animals. There are 4,385 entries in the open class competitions.

The Butler County Fair will take place from noon to 11 p.m. Sunday and from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Daily admission is $7 for adults and $2 for children ages 6-12. Seniors 62 and older are admitted free on Wednesday. Four-day passes are $20 and 7-day passes are $30. Parking is included in the cost of admission. There is an extra fee for grandstand entertainment.

For more information, call 513-892-1423 or visit www.butlercofair.com.

West Chester’s Josh Chichester excels at U-of-L Pro Day

Posted by akiefaber March 8th, 2012, 4:21 pm Post a Comment

University of Louisville tight end Josh Chichester made great strides of accomplishing his “ultimate goal” of playing professional football during the school’s pro day Wednesday.

According to his former high school coach, Lakota West’s Larry Cox, Chichester measured out at 6-foot-6 235 pounds, had a vertical jump that cleared 37 inches and turned in a 40-yard dash time of 4.58 seconds in front of representatives of 20 NFL teams.

In comparison, his 40-yard time would have tied him for the third place among tight ends during the NFL Combine in Indianapolis in late February. Furthermore, his 37-inch vertical was better than any jump turned in by tight end at the Combine.

Out of high school, Chichester’s athletic ability on both the football field and on the basketball court attracted the attention of many Division I programs. He was actually close to playing football at Ohio State, until the Buckeyes took away their offer. Other schools, Chichester seriously considered for both sports, included Purdue, Illinois, Tennessee and Pittsburgh, to name a few.

“Josh was a tremendous athlete, he had Division I basketball offers as well as football offers,” Cox said. “But he has always, really loved football and that has always been a passion for him.”

Chichester passion for football led him to sign with U-of-L and head coach Bobby Petrino, who left for the Atlanta Falcons job before Chichester participated in a single practice. Chichester described the coaching change as “a tough time” for him and the other recruits. However, he has enjoyed playing for head coach Steve Kragthorpe (hired in 2007 and fired in November of 2009) and for current head coach Charlie Strong.

Meanwhile, his basketball career at U-of-L lasted one year when he averaged 1.8 points in six games for U-of-L head coach Rick Pitino in 2007-2008.

“My ultimate goal is to play professional football,” Chichester said. “As I grew older and wiser, I realized…I couldn’t worry about being a dual-sport athlete, so I decided to drop basketball.”

Chichester was also a dual-position player for the Cardinals in 2010, splitting time between tight end and wide receiver. Out of high school, he was recruited only as a wide receiver.

“Playing tight end never came up until last year (2010) when I was bigger, faster, stronger, which I had to be in order to play the position,” Chichester said. “The transition was not as difficult as I thought it would be. The difficult part was learning the proper blocking techniques and schemes.

“I hope it helps me (reach the NFL), but I was determined to play wide receiver or any other position to help our team.”

In his four-year career, Chichester had 97 receptions for 1,253 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also graduated from Louisville with a degree in justice administration in 2010. This past season, Chichester was working on his master’s degree.

According to Cox, due to his performance Wednesday, Chichester has been invited to a regional combine in Detroit in late March. The NFL Draft is scheduled to take place April 26-28.
