West Chester’s Josh Chichester excels at U-of-L Pro Day

Posted by akiefaber March 8th, 2012, 4:21 pm Post a Comment

University of Louisville tight end Josh Chichester made great strides of accomplishing his “ultimate goal” of playing professional football during the school’s pro day Wednesday.

According to his former high school coach, Lakota West’s Larry Cox, Chichester measured out at 6-foot-6 235 pounds, had a vertical jump that cleared 37 inches and turned in a 40-yard dash time of 4.58 seconds in front of representatives of 20 NFL teams.

In comparison, his 40-yard time would have tied him for the third place among tight ends during the NFL Combine in Indianapolis in late February. Furthermore, his 37-inch vertical was better than any jump turned in by tight end at the Combine.

Out of high school, Chichester’s athletic ability on both the football field and on the basketball court attracted the attention of many Division I programs. He was actually close to playing football at Ohio State, until the Buckeyes took away their offer. Other schools, Chichester seriously considered for both sports, included Purdue, Illinois, Tennessee and Pittsburgh, to name a few.

“Josh was a tremendous athlete, he had Division I basketball offers as well as football offers,” Cox said. “But he has always, really loved football and that has always been a passion for him.”

Chichester passion for football led him to sign with U-of-L and head coach Bobby Petrino, who left for the Atlanta Falcons job before Chichester participated in a single practice. Chichester described the coaching change as “a tough time” for him and the other recruits. However, he has enjoyed playing for head coach Steve Kragthorpe (hired in 2007 and fired in November of 2009) and for current head coach Charlie Strong.

Meanwhile, his basketball career at U-of-L lasted one year when he averaged 1.8 points in six games for U-of-L head coach Rick Pitino in 2007-2008.

“My ultimate goal is to play professional football,” Chichester said. “As I grew older and wiser, I realized…I couldn’t worry about being a dual-sport athlete, so I decided to drop basketball.”

Chichester was also a dual-position player for the Cardinals in 2010, splitting time between tight end and wide receiver. Out of high school, he was recruited only as a wide receiver.

“Playing tight end never came up until last year (2010) when I was bigger, faster, stronger, which I had to be in order to play the position,” Chichester said. “The transition was not as difficult as I thought it would be. The difficult part was learning the proper blocking techniques and schemes.

“I hope it helps me (reach the NFL), but I was determined to play wide receiver or any other position to help our team.”

In his four-year career, Chichester had 97 receptions for 1,253 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also graduated from Louisville with a degree in justice administration in 2010. This past season, Chichester was working on his master’s degree.

According to Cox, due to his performance Wednesday, Chichester has been invited to a regional combine in Detroit in late March. The NFL Draft is scheduled to take place April 26-28.

Ohio State’s Solomon Thomas wants to ‘move forward’

Posted by akiefaber August 23rd, 2011, 4:22 pm Post a Comment

Solomon Thomas

It wasn’t until last December that many football fans discovered Ohio State’s Solomon Thomas.

The 6-foot-5 255-pound defensive end from Lakota West High School hadn’t had the opportunity to grab the spotlight for his actions on the football field. Instead, the world was introduced to Thomas as one of five Buckeyes suspended by the NCAA for five games after selling Ohio State memorabilia and receiving improper benefits.

According to a press release from the NCAA, Thomas had to repay $1,505 for selling his 2008 Big Ten championship ring for $1,000, his 2008 Gold Pants for $350 and receiving discounted services worth $155.

“I have learned a lot from it,” Thomas said. “I found out who my friends are and who supports me. My team has supported me and I am accepting my punishment. I learned that, in life, when you mess up the only way to deal with it is to man up. Don’t point fingers, own up to it.”

Besides Thomas, the NCAA suspended Terrelle Pryor, DeVier Posey, Dan “Boom” Herron and Mike Adams for the first five games this season. While Pryor has since left the team and has been drafted in the NFL’s supplemental draft by the Oakland Raiders, he will still be suspended for the first five games of the NFL season.

Those five players, however, were allowed to play in the Sugar Bowl this January, which took place 12 days after the NCAA handed down its five-game suspension.

Leading up to the game, members of the college football media reported extensively on the suspensions. Most of the attention was on offensive stars Pryor, Posey and Herron, and if they should be allowed to play. (more…)

West Chester’s Chichester hopes to have big year at U-of-L

Posted by akiefaber July 15th, 2011, 3:28 pm Post a Comment

There has been a lot of uncertainty in Josh Chichester’s athletic career at the University of Louisville. Uncertainty on who was going to coach the Cardinals, who was going to throw him the football, what position would he play and which sport should he focus on.

Chichester was also a dual-position player for the Cardinals last season, splitting time between tight end and wide receiver. Out of high school, he was recruited only as a wide receiver. Currently, in this year’s media guide, the 6-foot-8, 258-pound Chichester is listed as the No. 1 tight end on the depth chart.

“Playing tight end never came up until last year when I was bigger, faster, stronger, which I had to be in order to play the position,” Chichester said. “The transition was not as difficult as I thought it would be. The difficult part was learning the proper blocking techniques and schemes.

“I hope it helps me (reach the NFL), but I was determined to play wide receiver or any other position to help our team.”

In his career, Chichester has 69 receptions for 860 yards and nine touchdowns. Last season, Chichester was tied for the team lead with five touchdown receptions. He also graduated from Louisville with a degree in justice administration. Currently, he is working on his master’s degree.

WHO WILL THROW IT TO CHICHESTER IN 2011: As well as having numerous head coaches, Chichester has seen four different quarterbacks start for the Cardinals during his three seasons on the team. This season, he could see two more if high-touted recruits freshman Teddy Bridgewater or sophomore Dominique Brown (Winton Woods) can wrestle away the starting job from former walk-on junior Will Stein.

Boehner at OSU commencement

House Speaker and West Chester resident John Boehner addressed students at The Ohio State University commencement exercises this Sunday, June 12. According to a story written by Julie Carr Smyth of the Associated Press, Boehner gave an eight-minute speech to a record 9,700 graduates.

Below is an excerpt of Smyth’s article:

Saying his own name was often mispronounced – rhyming with the words honor, leaner, even “boner” – Boehner said, “Thank God it’s not Weiner.” Fellow U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner, a New York Democrat, admitted last week to sexually explicit communications with as many as six women via social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

Graduates assembled under clear blue skies. Many sported shorts and flip-flops under their black robes, and some wore mortarboards decked out with scarlet and gray O’s, sequins, gift-wrap bows, feathers or pipe-cleaner creations. Students held balloons or flags to identify themselves, or scanned the crowd – cellphones to their ears – looking for loved ones.

Boehner told graduates that it is important to work hard, persevere and be humble.

“You know, life isn’t always about you,” he said. “I’m a big believer that everything in life is a two-way street, and being useful to others, being involved in your community, finding some way to serve is part as what I would describe as humility.”

With emotion in his voice, Boehner recalled his bartender father working 10 or 12 hours a day yet still finding time to volunteer.

“So before you think about what you want to do in your life, I would suggest to all of you: Think about who you want to be before you think about what you want to be,” he said.

John Boehner to speak at Ohio State commencement

Posted by akiefaber April 8th, 2011, 12:45 pm Post a Comment

John Boehner

In January, West Chester resident John Boehner captured his “American dream” when he was sworn in as the 61st Speaker of the House. In June, Boehner will help send off approximately 8,500 Ohio State University graduates on their way to their dreams when he will speak at the university’s spring commencement.

“Ohio State is honored to have Speaker Boehner address our graduates and their families,” OSU president E. Gordon Gee stated in a news release. “As one of the United States’ most prominent elected officials, the Speaker will bring invaluable wisdom and insight to our graduating class, assuring that the day is a fitting celebration of the realization of their educational aspirations.”

House Speaker Boehner is second in line of presidential succession behind only to the Vice President.

The commencement is set for June 12 at noon at Ohio Stadium.

According to the Columbus Dispatch, Ohio State does not pay its commencement speakers.

Lakota West grad makes his place in OSU history

Posted by akiefaber January 5th, 2011, 7:45 pm Post a Comment

Up until a month ago, not many Ohio State football fans knew what position Solomon Thomas played. Then on Dec. 23, OSU officials announced that five players including Thomas faced a five-game suspension after selling awards, gifts and apparel.

Solomon Thomas The junior defensive end, who attended Lakota West High School, sold his 2008 Big Ten championship ring for $1,000, his 2008 Gold Pants for $350 and received discounted services worth $155.

After the story broke Thomas, who recorded only 14 tackles in 12 games this season, was still a bit of an unknown among the Buckeye faithful.

It appeared as if all of the national media that covers college football was talking about the suspensions, but the focus was mainly on offensive star players Terrelle Pryor, DeVier Posey and Dan “Boom” Herron. The other suspended player, offensive tackle Mike Adams, was even better known than Thomas.

However, when Arkansas star quarterback Ryan Mallett dropped back to pass with 1:04 left in the fourth quarter of last night’s Sugar Bowl, Thomas had his named called again. This time, the Lakota West graduate helped preserve a bowl championship instead of selling it off.

On the play, Arkansas trailed 31-26 and had possession of the football on OSU’s 18-yard line. Mallett, who has thrown 62 combined touchdowns the last two seasons, made a mistake and was intercepted by Thomas. It was first career INT at Ohio State. According to ESPN.com, it was his first INT at any level.

In high school, Thomas was regarded as one of the state’s best defensive ends. In his senior year in 2006, Thomas recorded 58 tackles (13 for loss), had nine pass breakups and forced a fumble.
