After scoring a touchdown with less than two minutes to play, the Lakota East Thunderhawks successfully converted an onside kick and had a chance to win the game.
But, in the end, the Winton Woods Warriors defense stopped Lakota East, forcing an incomplete pass on 4th down with 41.2 seconds left in the 4th quarter.
After Lakota East senior running back Will Mahone scored the game’s first touchdown on a 26-yard run with 9:41 left in the first quarter, Winton Woods added a field goal, a safety and a touchdown to take a 12-7 lead with 8:47 left in the first half.
Mahone added another touchdown run to give East a 14-12 lead at the break. Overall, Mahone finished the contest with 125 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns on 24 carries. Through two games, he has rushed for 368 yards and 6 touchdowns on 40 carries.
In the second half, Winton Woods’ Nick Grissom scored back-to-back touchdowns on runs of 2 and 14 yards. The second score put the Warriors up 25-14 with 4:53 left in the game.
Then with 1:34 left in the game, Mahone scored his third touchdown of the game to cut the lead to 25-20.
The loss drops Lakota East to 1-1, while Winton Woods improves to 1-1.
