Lakota West and Lakota East football recruiting updates

With National Signing Day less than a month away, a pair of Lakota football players made commitments to colleges this weekend, while another senior added an offer.

Among the commitments was Lakota West offensive lineman Kyle Meadows, who verbally committed to the University of Kentucky on Saturday, and Lakota East linebacker Jake Chestnut recently committed to play football at Notre Dame College near Cleveland.

Joining Meadows on his visit to UK on Saturday was junior running back Mikel Horton, who has an offer to play football in Lexington. Horton, who has received interest from Louisville, Penn State and Michigan State, also has an offer from Indiana.

Horton, who is 6-foot-1 and 225 pounds, rushed for 1,003 yards and 13 touchdowns on 202 carries this past fall.

His teammate, senior linebacker Mike Kelly also recently added an offer from the Naval Academy.

Kelly, who is 6 feet 1 and 220 pounds, has offers from all three service academies and Yale, Lafayette and other Ivy League schools.

Kelly, who was first-team all-GMC this past season, will officially visit West Point this weekend.

Lakota West senior linebacker Mike Kelly received an offer from West Point on Monday, according to his high school head coach Larry Cox.

The offer and other Lakota West recruiting information involving junior running back Mikel Horton was reported by Mike Dyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer.

Kelly, who has a 4.0 GPA and a 28 on his ACT, also has offers from Yale, Indiana State, Lafayette, Princeton, Air Force, Brown and Villanova. Furthermore, Ohio and Kent State have shown interest in the linebacker.

This past season, Kelly was second on the team in total tackles (44) and in tackles for loss (10.5). He also had two sacks and led the team with two forced fumbles.

Meanwhile, Horton has received recent interest from Penn State and Michigan State.

In November, Horton was named to Rivals.com 250 Prospect Rankings list for the class of 2014. He was one of four players from the region to make the list, which also included Walnut Hills defensive back Nilijah Ballew, Conner (Hebron, Ky.) quarterback Drew Barker and Colerain wide receiver Trevon Hudson.

Rivals.com is listing all four local athletes as four-star recruits.

Lakota West senior Kyle Meadows to visit Oklahoma

Lakota West senior offensive tackle Kyle Meadows will take an official visit to Oklahoma this weekend, according to Lakota West coach Larry Cox. It is Meadows’ first official visit. High school seniors are allowed five official visits.

Meadows, who was ranked No. 5 among the top 50 players in Greater Cincinnati to watch in the 2013 class by The Enquirer, has scholarship offers to play college football from Louisville, Ohio, Youngstown State, Toledo, Pittsburgh, Akron, Illinois, Minnesota, Indiana, West Virginia, Northern Illinois, Florida State, Purdue, Kansas, North Carolina State and Kentucky.

Meadows’ Lakota West teammates have also been receiving some attention. The Cincinnati Enquirer’s Mike Dyer reported Wednesday that Ohio and Kent State are showing interest in senior linebacker Mike Kelly.

Lakota West linebacker Mike Kelly receives first offer

Lakota West senior linebacker Mike Kelly was offered by Lafayette College Thursday, according to Lakota West head coach Larry Cox.

Kelly, who has a 3.9 GPA, also received an endorsement of application from Princeton University. Other Ivy League programs including Yale, Harvard and Cornell have shown interest in the linebacker.

The 6-foot-1, 215-pound senior has also received interest from Miami and Ball State.

Kelly, who was fourth on the team in tackles for loss in 2011, is the brother of Lakota West graduate and University of Alabama offensive lineman Ryan Kelly.

Lakota West football players receiving interest from colleges

Cincinnati Enquirer recruiting expert Mike Dyer reported Friday that three Lakota West football players are attracting recent interest from colleges.

Lakota West head coach Larry Cox told Dyer that senior linebacker Mike Kelly is receiving interest from Miami and Ball State. The coach also said that senior offensive tackle Kyle Meadows is receiving interest from Ohio State and junior quarterback Tyler Jones is receiving interest from Cincinnati and Mid-American Conference schools.

Kelly, who was fourth on the team in tackles for loss in 2011, is the brother of Lakota West graduate and University of Alabama offensive lineman Ryan Kelly. He has also received interest from Akron, Northern Illinois and Ivy League programs that include Yale, Harvard, Princeton and Cornell.

In 2011, Kelly was sixth on the team with 38 total tackles. He also had 10 tackles for loss and an interception.

Meanwhile, Meadows already has offers from Louisville, Ohio, Youngstown State, Toledo, Pittsburgh, Akron, Illinois, Minnesota, Indiana, West Virginia, Northern Illinois, Florida State, Purdue, Kansas, North Carolina State and Kentucky.

Cox told Dyer that Meadows is taking his time with the process and could take three finalists into the season and make his official visits. Cox said Ohio State is still “extremely interested in him.”

Also, according to Cox, UC is showing interest in Jones, who began last season as Firebirds’ starting quarterback. Eventually, fellow sophomore Malik Grove earned more playing time at QB and started the last three games.

Statistically, Jones completed 51-of-122 passes for 772 yards. He also threw for nine touchdowns and ran for three more.

Lakota West’s Mike Kelly attracts Ivy League programs

Mike Dyer of The Recruiting Trail blog on Cincinnati.com is reporting that Lakota West junior linebacker Mike Kelly is receiving interest from Ivy League football programs that include Yale, Harvard, Princeton and Cornell.

Dyer is also reporting that Kelly has received interest from The University of Akron and Northern Illinois University.

In 2011, Mike Kelly was sixth on the team with 38 total tackles. He also had 10 tackles for loss and an interception.

Meadows adds another offer: Dyer also recently reported on his blog that junior offensive lineman Kyle Meadows added an offer from Northern Illinois. The offer is Meadows’ sixth this week and ninth this offseason. The 6-foot-5 295-pound offensive tackle also has offers from Akron, Illinois, West Virginia, Ohio, Toledo, Louisville, Youngstown State and Pittsburgh.

Interested in playing fall sports? - The Lakota West football program will be hosting a meeting Thursday for all students who are interested in playing football next season for Plains Junior, Ridge Junior, Lakota West Freshman and Lakota West High School varsity and junior varsity teams. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will be held in the gym at Lakota West High School. There will also be a similar meeting for parents and student athletes, who are currently in grades 8-11, interested in playing boys’ soccer for the Firebirds Tuesday, March 6 at 7 p.m. at Lakota West High School.
