Menchie’s sponsors food drive for Reach Out Lakota

Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt is sponsoring a food drive to benefit Reach Out Lakota this month. Customers can bring in food items, Jan. 7-20, which will be donated to Reach Out Lakota to help stock their food pantry during the winter months.

Customers can bring non-perishable food items to the Beckett Ridge location, 8177 Princeton-Glendale Road, during store hours: Monday through Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m. from 11 p.m., and Sunday 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Each customer who donates will receive $1 off their yogurt mix.

The Beckett Ridge Menchie’s location opened in August. At the time, it was the second Menchie’s in Greater Cincinnati.

Reach Out Lakota is a non-profit organization whose mission is to assist individuals and families in the Lakota school district through its food and clothing pantries.

Menchie’s in West Chester begins weeklong grand opening celebration Saturday

Greater Cincinnati’s second Menchie’s frozen yogurt location officially opened at 8177 Princeton-Glendale Road in West Chester last Friday. However, the new fro-yo shop will celebrate its grand opening with a weeklong celebration that begins this Saturday.

During the promotional event, there will be a different special each day, including free frozen yogurt from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Below is a complete list of the scheduled specials:

Day: Saturday
Time: 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Details: Ribbon cutting with Menchie (the mascot), free frozen yogurt, free T-shirts and a balloon artist

Day: Sunday
Time: 1 p.m.
Details: Free plushie doll, free color-in T-shirts and free face painting

Day: Monday
Time: 5 p.m. – 6 p.m.
Details: $1 yumm – Fill up your cup for only $1

Day: Tuesday
Time: 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.
Details: Kids 10 and under eat free

Day: Wednesday
Time: 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Details: Lunchtime yumm – Half-off frozen yogurt

Day: Thursday
Time: 3 p.m.
Details: Free dodge ball with every cup purchased

Day: Friday
Time: 8 p.m. to close
Details: Date night – Buy one frozen yogurt, get one free

Owner and operator Jim Hach, who is from Liberty Township, is also working on opening another Menchie’s location in the shopping complex in Fairifield that currently features Jungle Jim’s.

Overall, Hach wants to open five Menchie’s locations in Greater Cincinnati.

Currently, there is only one location in Cincinnati at 6360 Tylersville Road in Mason. That location is near Voice of America Park in West Chester, which also has similar establishments like Freeze Yogurt Bar, Bad Frog and Orange Leaf nearby.

New shooting range prepares public for zombie apocalypse- Kevin Higgins opened a new shooting range in West Chester called Shoot Extreme, 7773 Cincinnati-Dayton Road, that features instructional courses and zombie hunts. The zombie hunts features computer controlled zombies in a dark environment who scream and fall down when shot.

Princeton Road opens in Liberty Township – The Butler County Engineer’s Office recently announced that it has opened the portion of Princeton Road in Liberty Township that was closed to improve sight distance near the Reserves of Liberty subdivision.

Reach Out Lakota seeks back-to-school clothing – Reach Out Lakota recently finished collecting for its annual back-to-school program, a donation drive aimed at collecting school supplies for children in need in the Lakota school district. Now, the organization is in need of back-to-school clothing for children for the fall and the winter.

Liberty Township swimmers help guide Marlins to title- The Cincinnati Marlins recently celebrated its four straight Junior Olympics championship when it competed at the Ohio 2012 Long Course Junior Olympics. Helping the Marlins to the title were Liberty Township residents Joshua McDonald and Grace Luebbe.

Lakota West ranked No. 10 in Enquirer coaches’ poll – The Lakota West football program was ranked No. 10 in The Cincinnati Enqurier coaches’ preseason poll, which was released last Monday. Lakota East was ranked No. 12.

Roundabout opens near Cherokee Elementary – The Butler County Engineer’s Office announced last Tuesday night that all four legs of the new roundabout at Kyles Station Road and LeSourdsville-West Chester Road are now open. The intersection is near Cherokee Elementary, which will have its first day of school this Thursday.

Under new leadership, Hicks aims to put Texas back on top – This season, if the Texas Longhorns hope to continue their climb back to college football prominence, the defense will lean on Lakota West graduate Jordan Hicks after Keenan Robinson (Washington Redskins) and Emmanuel Acho (Cleveland Browns) were both drafted in the NFL.

Owner and operator Jim Hach said the store will have a weeklong grand opening celebration beginning Saturday, Aug. 25. During the promotional event, there will be a different special each day, including free yogurt from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the first day of the celebration.

Details of the celebration will eventually be shared on the store’s Facebook page – Menchie’s Beckett Ridge. The Facebook page, as well as its Twitter feed (@MechiesBeckett), will also be a good source for all future specials and new flavors.

Hach, who is from Liberty Township, is also working on opening another Menchie’s location in the shopping complex in Fairifield that currently features Jungle Jim’s.

Menchie’s to open West Chester location Aug. 17- West Chester will have Greater Cincinnati’s second Menchie’s frozen yogurt location when it opens at 8177 Princeton-Glendale Road next Friday, Aug. 17. Owner and operator Jim Hach announced the grand opening date last Wednesday night.

Local siblings share unique bond – John Johnston of The Cincinnati Enquirer wrote a story last week about a West Chester family with two siblings, who have both recently received heart transplants.

Ohio swine flu cases grow again – Sheila McLaughlin of The Cincinnati Enquirer wrote last Thursday that the Ohio Department of Health reported the number of confirmed H3N2v swine flu cases from the Butler County Fair has risen to 16.

Eric Bauman named principal at Lakota’s Liberty Junior- The Lakota Board of Education approved the appointment of Eric Bauman to principal of Liberty Junior School during a recent school board meeting. Bauman had previously served as an assistant principal at Lakota Plains Junior School and at Lakota East High School.

Liberty Township seeing a rash of vandalism – Sue Kiesewetter reported last week for The Cincinnati Enquirer that a rash of vandalism in parts of Liberty Township has officials working to increase Butler County sheriff’s patrols in targeted areas.

Lakota West senior Annie Bierman verbals to Furman – Lakota West senior Annie Bierman once thought of herself as a soccer player until her father forced her to play volleyball. After eight years of playing soccer, Bierman eventually quit and is now planning to continue her volleyball career in college.

Street name changes near West Chester Hospital – If you are having trouble finding directions to your local doctor’s office, it is likely the office hasn’t moved. But, it could mean, the name of the street of where it is located may have changed. University Court, which surrounds West Chester Hospital, now has two different names.

Lakota West grads play in Bengals preseason game – A pair of Lakota West graduates played in Friday night’s preseason game between the New York Jets and Cincinnati Bengals at Paul Brown Stadium. Fullback John Conner started for the Jets, while linebacker Grant Hunter made a tackle for the Cincinnati Bengals in his first NFL game.

Former Lakota East wrestler to compete at Olympics Aug. 12 – Former Lakota East and Princeton wrestler Khetag Pliev wrestled for Team Canada this past Sunday, which was the last day of the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Pliev had a unique journey to the Games, where he won his first match before losing to eventual gold-medal winner Jacob Stephen Varner of the United States and then to bronze-medal winner Kurban Kurbanov of Azerbaijan.

Menchie’s to open West Chester location next month – West Chester will have Greater Cincinnati’s second Menchie’s frozen yogurt location when it opens at 8177 Princeton-Glendale Road sometime in August. Owner and operator Jim Hach estimated last Tuesday that the store will open in mid-to-late August.

No Lakota junior high sports will be canceled this fall – Chris Passarge, Lakota’s executive director of business operations, told WestChesterBuzz last week that not a single junior high sport will be canceled this fall due to low participation numbers. The school district is still accepting athletes who register and pay fees by Aug. 1.

Lakota approves $40K ‘Community Conversation’ – The Lakota Board of Education approved a $40,000 contract last Monday with Citizens for Civic Renewal for a program called “Community Conversation” that will focus on community engagement. The board approved the program despite not having two of its five members in attendance. The contract begins July 17, 2012 and ends July 31, 2013.

Lakota appoints community relations consultant – The Lakota Board of Education, minus two of its five board members, unanimously approved the hiring of Randy Oppenheimer last Monday as a consultant to fill its open community relations position. Oppenheimer was approved by the school board Monday on the recommendation of Superintendent Karen Mantia, who was absent from the board meeting due to a death in the family.

Crazy Cardboard Regatta entertains thousands – According to MetroParks of Butler County officials, the third annual Crazy Cardboard Regatta at Voice of America Park on Saturday attracted thousands for the second straight year. The park system announced the attendance and estimated funds collected for “Paddle with a Purpose” last Tuesday.

Ex-Bengal’s daughter garnering collegiate interest – Despite not playing volleyball until her freshman year, Lakota West junior Gabby Blados is already attracting the attention of recruiters from some of the biggest college conferences in the country.

Boehner releases statement on tragedy in Colorado – Speaker of the House and West Chester resident John Boehner released a statement last Friday morning in response to the tragedy that took place during a midnight premiere of the latest Batman movie.

Lakota footballers make local list of ‘players to watch’ – Cincinnati Enquirer recruiting reporter Mike Dyer mentioned four Lakota West football players among those to watch this season in the classes of 2013 and 2014. The only Lakota West senior mentioned in Dyer’s list of “50 area football players to watch in the 2013 class” was offensive lineman Kyle Meadows, who was ranked No. 5 among the list of athletes from throughout Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.

Owner and operator Jim Hach estimates that the store will open in mid-to-late August.

Hach, who is from Liberty Township, is also working on opening another Menchie’s location in the shopping complex in Fairifield that currently features Jungle Jim’s. That yogurt shop is not expected to open until sometime in October.

Overall, Hach wants to open five Menchie’s locations in Greater Cincinnati.
