Aspiring artists at Lakota East and Lakota West high schools have been taking advantage of opportunities to get their artwork out in the public eye.
And for some, the outcome has been the chance to display their creations at high-traffic events and locations throughout the West Chester and Liberty Township communities.
City of Hamilton’s IceFest
Lakota West freshman, Elen Aslanyan, sculpted the Statue of Liberty torch out of a bar of soap, winning first place in the U.S. division of the competition.
As part of their Fine Art I class, the students produced sculptures made entirely out of Ivory soap bars and resembling notable landmarks in the world, nation or even local community.
The top sculptures from each of the eight classes were submitted for consideration to be included the city of Hamilton’s annual IceFest, a family-friendly event featuring ice sculptures by Olympic, International and local carvers. Part of IceFest is the soap sculpture competition, which enjoyed its largest participation this year with more than 1,200 eighth and ninth graders throughout Butler County participating.
Students’ soap sculptures were displayed at this year’s event on Jan. 18 and 19 in a store-front window next to the U.S. Bank on High Street.
Other Lakota West freshman finalists participating in the competition included Brenna Bierman, Shane Harris, Bonnie Lin, Meghan McPherson, Chelsea Owusu-Korkor, Stephanie Roberts, Mikayla Smith, Diego Sanchez Vazquez and Nicole Wess.

Two other Lakota West Computer Fine Art students, now graduates, were also honored for their top-picked designs. They include 2012 graduate and University of Cincinnati freshman, Ema Koch, and 2012 graduate and freshman at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Sarah Hopper.
Mellow Mushroom

The final designs were put to a public vote and Lakota East junior, Parklyn Petty, won “Mellowest Artist of all Time.” She will receive $50 and her design printed on a Mellow Mushroom t-shirt.
Cincinnati Overture Competition

Koch and Webber are both part of the AP Studio Art: Drawing course at Lakota West. Both students submitted portfolios consisting of eight works of drawing and painting. They competed for a place in the finals, along with 13 other local semifinalists last Saturday.
Koch was named one of the four finalists and will receive a $500 scholarship and will compete for the Overture Award and $2,500 scholarship on March 2 at the Aronoff Center.
The Overture Awards Program recruits judges for the competition from the professional arts community.
Other Lakota semifinalists qualifying for other Overture Awards divisions included Lakota West junior Luke Hamilton (instrumental music), Lakota East freshman Victoria Shields (theater) and Lakota East seniors Ethan Bennett and Kayla Burley (vocal music).
Koch was the only Lakota student named as a finalist.
