West Chester neighbors want to stop Kroger – A Kroger Marketplace could be coming to West Chester Township, and not everyone is happy about it. Tom Eggert and his neighbors on Wethersfield Drive have lined their street and the corner of Tylersville Road and Princeton-Glendale Road (State Route 747), near where the proposed Kroger would be built, with lawn signs that read “StopKroger.com.”

Lakota West downs Withrow in Royal 8 Hardwood Classic – Lakota West completed an impressive weekend of work by beating Withrow 69-56 last Monday night in the championship game of the inaugural LaRosa’s Royal 8 Hardwood Classic at Fairfield. The Firebirds, unranked in Enquirer Division I coaches’ poll heading into the tourament, got 49 points from the guard trio of Ali Barnes, Tyler Williams and Malik Grove to hand the then-ranked No. 4 Tigers just their second loss in 14 games this season.

For the first time Beckett Park has ice skating – for now - Owen and Harper Hodgett made use of the ice rink at Beckett Park in West Chester Thursday. The man-made water feature has been allowed to freeze naturally for ice skating. This is the first time temperatures have permitted skating. The water feature was part of $2.09 million upgrade of the park, which was finished in late June.

West Chester to host Junior U.S. Open Water Ski Championships – The Butler County Visitors Bureau in conjunction with the Miami University Water Ski club and Lotta Watta announced last Thursday afternoon that it has been awarded the 2013 Junior U.S. Open Water Ski Championships, which will be held June 29-30 at Voice of America Park in West Chester. The two-day event will feature 100 of the nation’s top junior water ski athletes under the age of 21.

Lottery winner’s story inspires toilet paper donation – It wasn’t quite a truckload of toilet paper, but it was enough to satisfy Regina Jackson. Jackson, who recently won $1 million from the Ohio Lottery New Year’s Raffle, told the Enquirer earlier this month that she wanted to buy a truck full of toilet paper with her recent winnings. Upon hearing Jackson’s story, Procter & Gamble was inspired to donate 5,000 rolls in her name.

Bella Vino Wine Merchants & Bar opens – Bella Vino Wine Merchants & Bar, a wine shop and wine bar in Springboro, opened a second location in West Chester last week. Bella Vino purchased Little Sonoma Wine Shop and opened a few doors down at 6064 West Chester Road.

Enlisted West Chester woman ‘wants to go to war’ – Krista Ramsey of The Cincinnati Enquirer wrote about a Lakota West senior who is thrilled about last Thursday’s announcement by Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, allowing women in combat. The West Chester teenager completed some of her training last summer and will leave for more a few weeks after her high school graduation in June. She plans to be in the military for at least 20 years.

A group braved the elements and participated at the March for Unity in Our Community in West Chester Monday afternoon.

The march is held every year to honor of Martin Luther King Day. Photos were taken by Adam Kiefaber of WestChesterBuzz.com.

Marchers met at Union Day School, 8735 Cincinnati-Dayton Road, at noon and proceeded south about a half-mile to the West Chester Presbyterian Church where all marchers were given a free lunch, donated by area restaurants.

Tonight, at 7 p.m., Charles Parrish, 95, of West Chester Township, will share his experience living through the civil rights movement at the Live the Dream: Our Declaration of Unity program at Liberty Township’s Cornerstone United Methodist Church, 7600 Princeton-Glendale Road.

The event will also include a showing Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, which took place 50 years ago at the March of Washington in 1963.

In connection with the MLK observance, a lecture on George Washington Carver, will be presented Feb. 19 during Black History Month at MidPointe Library West Chester. The hour-long program begins at 7 p.m. in the library’s community room a/b.

Carver, a botanist, was born a slave, but when on to develop more than 100 uses for peanuts and went on to teach and run the agricultural department at the Tuskegee Institute for 47 years.

A 95-year-old black man who lived the civil rights movement will be the keynote speaker for West Chester and Liberty townships’ observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Charles Parrish, of West Chester Township, was born in Georgia but moved with his family to Glendale as a young boy of five or six when his father feared for the family’s safety after a lynching.

“This is a golden opportunity for people to sit at the foot of history and listen to it,’’ said Gail Webster, who helped organize the event. “This is somebody sharing his life history with us at the 50th anniversary of King’s I Have a Dream speech.”

Parrish’s presentation and the showing of King’s 1963 speech at the March of Washington, highlight the Live the Dream: Our Declaration of Unity program that begins at 7 p.m., at Liberty Township’s Cornerstone United Methodist Church, 7600 Princeton-Glendale Road.

The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Student submissions to the Why Bother? essay contest answering the question, ‘Why should we bother to celebrate this holiday?’ contest will be on display in the lobby.

Besides Parrish’s talk and the video, winners of the essay contests will be reading them out loud. The Community Choir will sing and piano music will be performed by Vince Benabese.

The community’s observance of King begins Monday with the annual March for Unity in Our Community. It begins at noon at Union Day School, 8735 Cincinnati-Dayton Road.

Community choir rehearsal for MLK program set for Jan. 13

Residents of Liberty and West Chester townships are invited to the Jan. 13 community choir rehearsal for the Martin Luther King Day program.

The choir will practice beginning at 2 p.m. at St. Paul AME Church, 7161 Ohio 4 in Fairfield. All residents are invited to sing with the group, which will perform at the Jan. 21 Live the Dream: Our Declaration of Unity program.

The program begins at 7 p.m. Jan. 21 at Cornerstone United Methodist Church, 7600 Ohio 747, in Liberty Township.

The choir is under the direction of Kyle McCarty, music director at Cornerstone United Methodist Church. Music will be available at the rehearsal or can be obtained in advance by emailing McCarty at kmmcarty@cornerstonechurch.org.

Why Bother with Martin Luther King Day contest

Lakota students and others who live within the school district can now enter the Why Bother? contest as part of the 2012 celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Day in West Chester and Liberty townships.

Those in grades two through six should submit a poster or other artwork highlighting their answer to the question, Why bother with Martin Luther King Day. Junior and senior high school entries should be in short essay forms.

Group entries, however, will be accepted from all students in grades 2-12 and may be in a multimedia or performance format. Students from both public and non-public schools are eligible to participate.

One winner from each of the following categories will receive a $20 cash prize: elementary, junior high, high school, English as a Second Language, and special education. An overall grand prize winner will receive a $50 cash prize.

The deadline for submitting entries is 4 p.m., Nov. 28. Entries can be dropped off at any Lakota school office. They can also be dropped off at the administrative office at West Chester Township, 9113 Cincinnati-Dayton Road; or Liberty Township, 6400 Princeton Road.

All entries will be displayed at the Live the Dream: Our Celebration of Unity event in Jan. 16, 2012, at Cornerstone United Methodist Church in West Chester Township.

The holiday is observed each year on the third Monday in January in honor of King’s birthday.

Celebrate MLK Day in West Chester

There will be a pair of activities in West Chester designed to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, which is tomorrow, Jan. 17, 2011. The holiday is observed each year on the third Monday in January in honor of King’s birthday, which is Jan. 15.

“A March for Unity in Our Community” commemorates the marches of the Civil Rights movement and will start at noon tomorrow. The march will begin at Union Day School on Cincinnati-Dayton Road. Marchers will walk from the school to West Chester Presbyterian Church. At the church, participants of the march will have a light lunch and fellowship.

Union Day School is located at 8735 Cincinnati-Dayton Road in West Chester. West Chester Presbyterian Church is located about a half mile from the school on Cincinnati-Dayton Road.

Later tomorrow night, the “Live the Dream: Out Declaration of Unity” celebration will take place at Cornerstone Methodist Church on Princeton Glendale Road. That celebration will begin at 7 p.m. and will include relevant speakers, musical entertainment and winners of the Lakota Local Schools Martin Luther King, Jr. essay and art contest.

Cornerstone Methodist Church is located at 7600 Princeton-Glendale Road in Liberty Township. The church is located near the Tylersville Road intersection.

Both events are free and open to the public.
