$500M Powerball jackpot makes ticket sales brisk

Janice Morse reports:

Powerball lottery ticket sales are on fire, thanks to the lure of a record-breaking $500 million jackpot that still could climb higher before Wednesday night’s drawing for the winning numbers, Marie Kilbane, spokeswoman for the Ohio Lottery Commission, said Tuesday.

Statewide, people wagered a total of nearly $2.5 million on Powerball tickets Sunday and Monday – about $2 million more than the total dollar amount of bets placed during the same period a week earlier, Kilbane said. Figures specific to Greater Cincinnati were unavailable.

The jackpot could swell more, depending on sales tallied after today, Kilbane said. The previous record-high Powerball jackpot was $365 million, in 2006.

At the current level, a single winner choosing a lump-sum payment would receive $327 million. If the annual payments option is chosen, varying amounts would be distributed to the winner for 30 years, Kilbane said. In either case, amounts paid to the winner would be subject to withholding of 25 percent federal taxes and 3 percent Ohio state taxes, Kilbane said.

Of course more than one winning ticket could be issued, which would dilute the payout.

The winnings would be likely subject to additional taxation, including possibly local taxes, when the winner files his or her tax return.

“We advise anybody winning at this level to get some financial advice and legal advice, and take a little time to think about what they might do before they make their claim,” Kilbane said.

Winners have 180 days from the drawing date to claim their winnings.

Mega Millions jackpot swells to record $640 million

Posted by akiefaber March 30th, 2012, 12:08 am Post a Comment

Convenience stores and gas stations could develop some long lines Friday, as people will likely shell out their cash for Mega Millions tickets which will give them the chance to win a world record $640 million jackpot.

According to lottery officials, the previous largest jackpot in world history was $390 million. That jackpot, also a Mega Millions, occurred in March of 2007.

If someone picks the winning numbers – and doesn’t have to share the jackpot – they will have the option of receiving the full jackpot in 26 annual payments of approximately $24.6 million or a cash option of $462 million.

Jackpot winners will have to pay federal and state taxes. According to www.usamega.com, after a 25 percent federal tax and a six percent state tax the annual payments will be approximately $17 million and the cash option will be around $321 million.

Friday’s jackpot has been on the rise since Tuesday’s drawing. On Wednesday, the jackpot was estimated to be $476 million. It was then raised to $500 million and on Thursday it was raised to $540 million.

Overall, the jackpot has been growing since Jan. 24. That was the last time there was jackpot winner. It has now rolled over 18 times without a winner.

People can buy tickets until 10:45 p.m. Friday and the drawing will be held at around 11 p.m. The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 176 million, according to lottery officials.

The final numbers will be posted on the official Mega Millions website after the drawing at 11 p.m.

Mega Millions jackpot swells to $312 million

Posted by akiefaber March 25th, 2011, 10:48 am Post a Comment

Due to brisk sales, officials in the Mega Millions states revised today’s jackpot estimate from $304 million to $312 million. This marks the second time this year that jackpot has been more than $300 million.

On Jan. 4, the jackpot ballooned to $380 million. It was the second-highest jackpot in the history of the Mega Millions. Due to high ticket sales during that week, the jackpot went from $290 million to $330 million to $355 million to $380 million.

The biggest Mega Millions jackpot was $390 million in March of 2007.

This Friday’s $312 million jackpot is currently ranked as the sixth highest in the game’s history.

The final numbers will be posted on the official Mega Millions website after the drawing at 11 p.m.
