Lakota East at Winton Woods

The athletic departments at Lakota West and Lakota East high schools recently named their athletes of the week. Sophomore Mikel Horton and junior Leeah Floyd received the honor at Lakota East, while sophomore Tyler Jones and senior Mel Stewart were honored at Lakota West.

Horton has rushed for 296 yards and six touchdowns on 55 carries this fall for the Thunderhawks, who are 2-1 this season. He earned the athlete of the week honor after rushing for 118 yards and two touchdowns in the 38-37 four-overtime win at Winton Woods. In his first varsity start this season, Horton (photo) rushed for 161 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries.

Floyd has been a member of the Lakota East tennis team since her freshman year. This fall, she is 10-2 at No. 1 doubles with partner senior Sofey Fugate. As a team, with the help of Floyd and Fugate, Lakota East is 10-2 overall and 5-0 in the Greater Miami Conference. Last fall, Floyd/Fugate made the GMC First Team at No. 2 doubles.

Jones helped Lakota West win its first football game of the season this past Friday. In the 20-16 win at Anderson, Jones threw for 174 yards and three touchdowns. This is Jones first varsity season and he has started at quarterback in all three games for the Firebirds.

Stewart continued to add to her school record for career digs last week. The senior had 14 digs in a 25-9, 25-10, 25-8 win against Colerain Thursday. Not counting this past weekend’s tri, Stewart is averaging 16.75 digs per match. This summer, Stewart verbally committed to play volleyball for Northern Kentucky University.

The first day of the Greater Miami Conference Tennis Tournament ended with the No. 1 and No. 2 singles brackets showing a Lakota East player against a Lakota West player in Saturday’s final.

Lakota East No. 1 singles player Carolyn Pitman (senior) cruised through her first two matches, as did Lakota West No. 1 singles player Brooke Broda (freshman), meaning the two players will meet in the GMC final. Earlier this month, Pitman defeated Broda 6-1, 6-4. However, last weekend in the Greater Cincinnati Tennis Coaches Association Tournament final, Broda defeated Pitman 6-2, 6-4.

In the No. 2 singles bracket, Lakota East sophomore Taylor Holden (photo) and Lakota West sophomore Nicole Soutar (photo) find themselves in the final after winning their two matches on Day 1. Holden and Soutar have not faced each other this season. In the Lakota East vs. West matchup earlier this month, Soutar was moved to the No. 1 doubles pair.

Lakota West No. 3 singles player Madison Capovilla (freshman) won two matches on the first day of the tournament and will play Mason’s Lynn Kelly in the final.

Meanwhile, in doubles action, Lakota East No. 1 duo senior Samar Sheriff and senior Taylor Stephens finished in third place while East’s No. 2 duo junior Sofey Fugate and Leeah Floyd find themselves in Saturday’s final.

The last day of the GMC Tennis Tournament will begin at 8 a.m. Oct. 2 at Mason High School’s tennis facility.
