Firebirds lose battle to GMC’s top team Princeton

Lakota West and Princeton traded the lead six times and had four ties in the first half, but the Firebirds eventually lost by the score of 68-60 at Princeton Wednesday.

Kelsey Mitchell Princeton entered the game ranked No. 1 in the Cincinnati Enquirer’s Division I coaches poll and No. 23 nationally by ESPN. Its leading scorer, Kelsey Mitchell, finished with a season high 33 points and converted 14-of-14 of her free throw attempts.

Mitchell, who is ranked as the No. 1 player overall in the class of 2014 by ESPN HoopGurlz Terrific 25 rankings, is averaging 26.1 points per game this season.

Meanwhile, freshman Lauren Cannatelli led Lakota West with a career high 15 points. Senior teammate Ali Zieverink also had career highs in points with 12 and in rebounds with 11.

The win improves Princeton’s record to 9-0 overall and 6-0 in the Greater Miami Conference, while Lakota West’s record falls to 6-5 overall and 2-4 in the GMC.

Lakota West – No. 10 in the Enquirer’s coaches’ poll – will be back in action when it will host Colerain (7-4 overall, 3-3 in the GMC) at 2 p.m. Saturday. Princeton’s next game will be at Lakota East (7-2 overall, 5-1 in the GMC) at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Firebirds fall to Comets 52-36

After starting out the season 4-0, the Lakota West girls’ basketball team has lost three of its last four games including a 51-36 loss against Mason Wednesday.

Lakota West at Lakota East After being tied at the end of the first quarter, Lakota West fell behind in the second frame and was outscored 14-2 – giving Mason a 21-9 halftime lead.

Senior Brianna Glover, who is committed to Xavier University, and junior Kayla McDowell combined to finish with 34 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists to lead Mason.

Meanwhile, Lakota West freshman Lauren Cannatelli scored a career high 10 points.

The loss drops Lakota West’s record to 5-3 overall and 2-3 in the Greater Miami Conference. With the win, Mason improves to 5-1 overall and 5-1 in the GMC.

Lakota West will be back in action when its hosts the Holiday Hoops Fest Dec. 28-29. The Firebirds will face Toledo Central Catholic at 7:15 p.m. Dec. 28 and will play St. Ursula at 7:15 p.m. Dec. 29.

Lakota West rebounds with win against Hamilton

Thanks to a good fourth quarter, the Lakota West Firebirds were able snap a two-game losing streak and defeat previously unbeaten Hamilton by the score of 41-29 Saturday.

Lakota West at Lakota East Lakota West led 22-20 at the start of the fourth quarter and outscored the Big Blue 19-9 in the final frame.

Entering the contest, the Firebirds had lost to two of Greater Miami Conference’s top teams in Sycamore and Lakota East. Prior to those losses, Lakota West had started the year 4-0.

Sophomore center Elisabeth Carter produced career highs in minutes with 20, rebounds with 4 and in points with 9. Senior teammates Shabazz and Summer Reeves each scored 7 points, while freshman Lauren Cannatelli had 8 points and 4 rebounds.

Defensively, Lakota West had 15 steals and helped to force the Big Blue into committing 31 turnovers.

Hamilton junior guard Jillian Spurlock led all scorers with 10 points. Senior teammate Desiree Ash had a season low 5 points, but also finished with a season high 12 rebounds.

Lakota West (5-2 overall, 2-2 in the Greater Miami Conference) will host Mason (4-1 overall, 4-1 in the GMC) at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Meanwhile, Hamilton (5-1 overall, 3-1 in the GMC) will play at Talawanda at 7:30 p.m. Monday.

First day results of the GMC girls’ golf tournament

The Lakota East and Lakota West girls’ golf teams participated in day one of the Greater Miami Conference girls’ golf tournament at Weatherwax Golf Course in Middletown.

Ali Green After the first day, Lakota West is in third place as a team and Lakota East is fifth place. Sycamore finished first, Mason was second and Fairfield placed fourth.

Individually, Lakota West senior Ali Green posted the second-lowest score. Green shot a 76, while Sycamore sophomore Hanna Lee posted a 72.

The second day of the tournament will begin Thursday at 9 a.m. Results from Thursday will be combined with Tuesday’s results to determine team and individual championships.
