Posted by akiefaber January 17th, 2013, 9:22 am Post a Comment

Usual suspects draw top seeds in team event

Lakota East and senior Austin Daly (left) are the No. 3 seed in Region 7A. The regional tournament will begin next week, on Jan. 23. East will face No. 6-seeded Edgewood at Mason High School at 6 p.m., while No. 4 Lakota West will face No. 5 Springboro at Fairfield High School Photo taken during the Fairfield Invitational wrestling meet Jan. 5, 2013 by Tony Jones.

Kevin Goheen reports:

The Ohio High School Athletic Association announced regional brackets for its inaugural wrestling dual state tournament this week.

Moeller, Harrison and Fairfield in Division I, Ross in Division II and Reading in Division III were named No. 1 seeds in their respective regionals.

First and second round matches (regional quarterfinals) of the single-elimination tournament will be held on Jan. 23. Regional semifinals will be held on Jan. 30, with the regional finals set for Feb. 6.

Eight regional winners in the three divisions will meet on Feb. 9 at Ohio State University’s St. John Arena to determine state championship teams.

Sites and times for the regional quarterfinal round will be announced on Tuesday, according to the OHSAA

Moeller, ranked No. 1 in the Enquirer coaches’ poll and No. 3 in the state coaches’ poll, heads up the Division I, Region 8A field. Loveland, which is ranked No. 2 by the area coaches and No. 10 in the state, is the second seed in that half of the Region 8 bracket followed by No. 3 Sycamore and No. 4 Glen Este.

Harrison, Elder, St. Xavier and Princeton are the top four seeds in Region 8B. Harrison is ranked No. 6 in the latest Enquirer poll and owns a 31-30 dual win against No. 5 Elder this season.

Elder is coming off a 31-23 win against No. 7 St. Xavier this past Saturday night following a loss at Moeller on Friday. St. Xavier knocked off Harrison 31-27 last week.

Fairfield is the No. 1 seed in Region 7A. The Indians are ranked No. 3 locally. Mason, ranked No. 4, is the second seed followed by Lakota East as the third seed and Lakota West as the fourth seed. The Region 7B bracket is comprised of Dayton teams, led by Centerville as the No. 1 seed.

Lakota East will face Edgewood, a six seed, on Jan. 23 at 6 p.m. at Mason High School, while Lakota West will face Springboro, a five seed, that same day and time at Fairfield High School.

Ross is the No. 1-ranked team in the Enquirer Division II-III coaches’ poll. Coach Rich Dunn’s team, led by returning state qualifiers Joseph Jones (145) and Tyler Bridwell (195), have had strong showings at the Glenn Sample Coaches Classic (placing fourth) and other larger tournaments to earn the No. 1 seed in Division II Region 15B.

New Richmond is the No. 2 seed, followed by Eaton and No. 4 seed Bethel-Tate.

Reading, coming off a win at its own Charlie Moore Invitational this past weekend, is the top seed in Division III Region 23A, ahead of No. 2 Carlisle.

Deer Park is the third seed, while Badin is seeded fourth. Reading is ranked No. 4 in the coaches’ poll.

Blanchester, ranked No. 3 locally, is the second seed in Region 23B behind New Lebanon Dixie.

Lakota East and Lakota West wrestling report

Posted by akiefaber January 7th, 2013, 12:41 pm Post a Comment

This past weekend, the Lakota East varsity wrestling team placed sixth out of 18 teams at the Fairfield Invitational – just missing the top five by one point.

Austin Daly (Sr., 120 lbs.) and Jacob Burton (Sr., 285 lbs.) both placed second, losing very close bouts in the championship finals.

Daly knocked off long time nemesis Greyson Bardon from Fairfield in the semifinals. Lakota East head coach James Lehman said, Daly then lost a very close bout on a “mysterious” penalty in the finals to district champion Brendan Watson (Centerville).

Meanwhile, Burton had a rematch of his Coaches Classic semifinal loss in which he has now narrowed the gap even more losing a close 3-1 decision to Truman Gutapfel (Harrison). Gutapfel has a full ride to play football at Boston College.

Also placing for Lakota East: Justin Brown placed fourth; Daniel Roth placed fifth; Austin Schoeffler and Ryan Durham both placed sixth.

The JV/Freshmen competed very well at the Xenia JV Invitational where no team scores were kept. Champions included: Dominic Brown, Sam Roth, and Deante Evans; Josh Miller finished second; Nick Frank and Adam Hacker each placed third.
