Lakota students share opinions on how to run district

Posted by akiefaber May 3rd, 2012, 4:58 pm Post a Comment

During a focus group session at the Lakota Central Office Thursday, it was the students teaching Lakota administrators on how to better run the state’s seventh-largest school system.

The student-led focus group was the first of four sessions with Lakota officials, as the school district looks for more effective ways to educate its students.

“Students will tell you the truth and that is what we are looking for,” Lakota Superintendent Karen Mantia said. “We want to make sure we are responsive school system in meeting their needs. In order to do that, we need to ask them.

“This is just the tip of the ice berg.”

After the discussions with students, Mantia said that he hopes to extend an invitation for future focus groups with teachers and eventually with the community.

Among the topics covered, during the two-hour student focus group, included what ways students learn the best, how technology plays a role in their learning, what skills do they think they need to know for their future and what changes need to be made to the school system.

Lakota West senior Melody Stewart shares her opinion during a student focus group at the Lakota Central Office May 3, 2012. Photo taken by Adam Kiefaber.

One change some of the students agreed on was the district needing to be more lenient with online restrictions. Currently, students cannot visit websites like Twitter, Facebook and other blogs while on school grounds.

“Anything that could help us with our studies should be allowed,” Lakota West senior Melody Stewart said. “If that means going on Facebook to get something, then we should be allowed to do that. If you abuse that privilege than it should be taken away, but for educational purposes we should be able to go online and search for what we need.”

Stewart, who played volleyball in the Lakota school system and will continue her athletic career at Northern Kentucky University, also thought that the school system should focus on having more extracurricular activities.

“If I didn’t play volleyball, I don’t think that would be as involved in the school today,” Stewart said. “I think these activities help students feel connected to the school district. I believe we should get students more involved and have more extracurricular activities so they can have that connection and feel what I felt.”

Another Lakota athlete, who still has two more years of high school before he graduates, worries about the change in the academic schedule when the high schools move to six-period days in the fall.

“Next year is going to be a lot harder because we only have six periods,” said Lakota West sophomore Malik Grove, who has played varsity football, basketball and bowling. “You still need to earn enough credits. I will still need another foreign language and a fine arts class. I only have two years left to get those in order to get into to a good college.”

Meanwhile, Stewart hopes Grove and other future graduates will receive the same education she received while at Lakota.

“When I leave, I don’t want to see the school district go down the drain. I want them to keep improving,” Stewart said. “My experience at Lakota was great. I feel that I am very prepared for the future and I want other students who come up to feel the same way.

“I really hope that this meeting will give the school district a lot of information to keep improving our studies … because I believe there are many things that we can to do, to better prepare students for college and the workforce.”

Former Lakota West football players get chance with Bengals

Posted by akiefaber May 3rd, 2012, 9:49 am Post a Comment

Lakota West graduates Grant Hunter and Josh Chichester will both have the opportunity to prove to the Cincinnati Bengals that they are worth a roster spot.

Josh Chichester

Hunter, who played linebacker at Butler, was among one of the 14 college free agents that the Bengals signed Wednesday. While Chichester, was one of the three players with local ties who were invited to try out at next weekend’s, May 11-13, rookie minicamp.

Last season, at Butler, Hunter led his team in sacks with 10 and in tackles for loss with 15.5. During the NFL Draft process, Hunter worked out for the Bengals and the Indianapolis Colts.

According to a story posted on the Butler University official athletic website, Hunter almost didn’t answer the Bengals’ phone call when he noticed it was a 513 area code and thought that it was a telemarketer or an automated sales call.

“It turned out it was the linebackers’ coach from the Bengals, and I think I was speechless for about five minutes,” Hunter told butlersports.com. “I just remember saying thank you over and over again. It was probably one of the happiest moments of my life.”

Meanwhile, Chichester, who worked out for the Bengals and the New England Patriots before the NFL Draft, caught 97 passes for 1,253 yards and 11 touchdowns during his four-year career as a wide receiver and tight end at the University of Louisville.

Lakota West lacrosse team to celebrate seniors

Posted by akiefaber May 2nd, 2012, 9:21 am Post a Comment

A total 15 seniors from the Lakota West boys’ lacrosse will be honored Friday night before its match against Hilliard Bradley.

The senior night ceremony will take place around 7 p.m. and will be followed by the match at 7:30 p.m.

The seniors include captains Zach Crabtree, Will Gerhardt, Evan Hodel and Ben Lanier; as well as Austin Brock, Max Johnson, Nick Kossen, Mitch Limbert, Robbie McCurnin, Brandon Miller, Jake Romano, Javi Salas, Gage Shaeffer, Dylan Smith, and Logan Smith.

Seniors Zach Crabtree and Evan Hodel have both committed to play lacrosse next season at Wheeling Jesuit. Meanwhile, senior classmate and goalie, Ben Lanier, is still deciding where he will play.

The club enters senior night with a 3-7 overall record, but has lost by an average of only 2.7 goals per game.

“This season has not gone as expected as the team has been hit by a slew of injuries and illnesses,” Lakota West assistant coach Rob Gerhardt said. “Our boys have lost to some of the area’s best by small margins every game. This is a hopeful sign that we can play with any team, so when the playoffs begin we will have new hope.”

Firebirds shutout rival Lakota East

Posted by akiefaber April 30th, 2012, 7:53 pm Post a Comment

For the second time in four days, a Lakota West pitcher shutout the defending Division I baseball state champions.

Behind sophomore pitcher Grant Schuermann, Lakota West blanked the Lakota East Thunderhawks by the score of 3-0 on Friday. Then, on Monday, it was senior Zak Farmer who shutout Lakota East in a 7-0 victory at the Hawks Nest.

Lakota West's Michael Seaman jumps in the air to celebrate a run with a teammate during a 7-0 win against Lakota East Monday. Photo taken by Amanda Davidson.

“We have nothing but respect for Lakota East, obviously, they are the defending state champions,” said head coach Bill Dreisbach, who led Lakota West to a state title in 2007.

“Farmer was outstanding from the first inning on. All his pitches, he was throwing for strikes today. He was getting ahead of hitters. He just had a great effort and he has been pitching like that recently. Hopefully, it continues.”

After freshman Austin Allinger tripled to lead off the game and senior Jake Wagner followed with walk, Farmer drove in the game’s first run on what appeared to be routine double play that was broken up when the ball hit the base umpire.

“I didn’t see the play, but when I hit it I thought it was going to be a double play,” Farmer said. “But a run still would have scored, so I wouldn’t have been too upset.

“It kind of started a rally for us.”

The rally, led to four runs in the top half of the game’s first inning.

The run support was more than enough for Farmer, who allowed only two hits and struck out six batters in a complete-game effort. The win was the senior’s first as a varsity pitcher against the Thunderhawks.

“Since it is East, our rival of course, it feels really good,” said Farmer, who improved to 5-1 on the season. “This is good for the young guys.

“It is a big one for all of us.”

Meanwhile, the loss was the Thunderhawks fifth in a row and second straight without scoring a run. Prior to the losing skid, Lakota East had won seven consecutive games and outscored its opponents 57-to-15 during that stretch.

“Baseball is like that. It is a long season. You just have to find a way to get a hit and manufacture a run,” Lakota East head coach Ray Hamilton said. “I have never been a part of team that had been good offensively and then, all of sudden, changes in the last three games (of the season).”

After the five-run first, the Firebirds had trouble finding a way to hit Lakota East senior pitcher Michael Conrad. The senior struck out 12 batters in six innings of work and only gave up one hit after the first inning.

Relief pitcher, junior Brett Colburn, gave up two runs to Lakota West in the top of the seventh.

“We got some good swings on him (Conrad in the first inning) and we were fortunate enough to get the runs in that inning,” Dreisbach said. “You always feel fortunate to get some runs on a pitcher like him, because he is very good.”

BOX: W–Farmer (5-1, 6 K’s); L–Conrad (4-2, 12 K’s). Leaders: LW-Allinger 3B; Farmer 2-4, 2 RBIs; Dombart 2-4, 2 RBIs; Seaman 3B, 2 RBIs; Kuznof RBI. Records: Lakota West 14-9, 12-4 in GMC; Lakota East 13-11, 9-7 in GMC.
