Mason wins district tourneys, while Lakota golfers come up short

The Mason boys’ and girls’ golf programs both won Southwest District Tournament championships Thursday at Weatherwax Golf Course, while no Lakota golfers qualified for the state tournament.

In order to qualify for the state tournament, which will take place next week at Ohio State, a team had to finish in the top three or an individual (not on one of the qualifying teams) would have to finish in the top three.

Finishing in the top three as a team was Mason (300), Centerville (309) and Moeller (313) at the boys’ tournament, and Mason (338), Ursuline (352) and Centerville (353) at the girls’ tournament.

Heading into the district tournament Lakota West senior Marshall Stretch appeared to have a good chance to advance to state after being the medalist at the recent sectional and Greater Miami Conference tournaments.

In fact, it was at Weatherwax where Stretch shot back-to-back 74s to win the GMC title. But on Thursday, Stretch shot an 85 and finished in a tie for 56th place.

The top boys’ golfer finisher from the Lakota school district was Lakota East junior James Leisinger, who shot an 80 and was tied for 23rd.

Meanwhile, the girls’ individual results have not been posted online. However, Marc Hardin covered the girls’ tournament for The Cincinnati Enquirer. For more on the girls’ tournament, visit Cincinnati.com.

The boy’s district tournament will begin at 9 a.m. Thursday. The Lakota East team is expected to tee off at 9:10 a.m., while Stretch is scheduled to tee off at 10:50 a.m.

“It is critical that we maintain Lakota’s scholarship fund traditions of the past, remind the community of the goodness that lived in Kristin’s heart and how the Lakota athletic boosters and the Renneker’s turned her tragic death into yearly blessings for future Lakota female athletes”, Lakota West head basketball coach Andy Fishman said.

The scholarship, which is held by the Community Foundation of West Chester/Liberty, awards two students – one from Lakota East High School and another from Lakota West High School – with a $2,000 scholarship.
