In the middle of a pitchers’ duel, Oak Hills coach Jackie Cornelius-Bedel picked the right time to take a chance.

After reaching on an error, senior Devan Colebank was standing on second base with two outs in the top of the sixth inning. At the plate, senior Lauren Slatten hit a routine grounder to the shortstop, but the ball was bobbled by Lakota East junior Kadey Astrop.

“It was going to be whatever team made a tiny mistake that was going to determine who was going to win this game because there were two great pitchers going head-to-head,” Cornelius-Bedel said.

After mishandling the grounder, Astrop tossed the ball from her knees to junior first baseman Taylor Fair and Slatten beat the throw in a play that wasn’t close.

Meanwhile, Colebank raced home to score without the ball ever leaving the infield.

“With Devan you can’t make a mistake or pause with the ball because she is so fast,” Cornelius-Bedel said. “Anybody else, we wouldn’t have been able to do that, but Devan we could. She is lightning.”

For the Highlanders, who are No. 3 in The Cincinnati Enquirer Division I coaches’ poll, it was their second 1-0 win against No. 5 Lakota East this month. Prior to the season, Oak Hills had been swept by the Thunderhawks seven consecutive years – losing 14 straight.

A big reason for the turnaround has been the play of Slatten, who struck out nine in her sixth shutout of the season. With her latest gem, her season strikeout total increased to 192 in 101 innings of work. Slatten also improved her record to 13-3.

“Oak Hills has really good pitching and that makes a lot of other things come together,” Lakota East coach Steve Castner said. “That has been the difference in their team the past two years, really good pitching.

“(Slatten) did very well, but I think our pitcher did just as well.”

Lakota East did receive a strong performance from senior Lea Buckenmyer, who allowed only two hits and walked none.

But it came down to back-to-back errors that unjustly gave Buckenmyer the loss.

“That is the way it is when you put two good pitchers against each other with pretty good defenses. If someone makes a mistake or strings a couple of hits together, that makes all the difference,” Castner said.

W–Slatten (13-2, 9 K’s), L–Buckenmyer (8-4). Leaders: O–Slatten RBI. Records: Oak Hills 13-3, 10-1 in GMC; Lakota East 12-5, 6-4.

“Continue the tradition that has been set,” Sykes said. “Helping the players improve on all aspects with their game on and off the court.”

Lakota East returns all 12 players from last season. There is one incoming senior. “They know me and I know them,” said Sykes.

Sykes, who lives in Kennedy Heights, went through two rounds of interviews for the position. He said he was confident during the process. He is looking forward to scheduling staff meetings and figuring out which two college camps the team will attned this summer.

Sophomore catcher powers West past East

Posted by akiefaber April 8th, 2013, 9:11 pm Post a Comment

Led by the pitcher-catcher combination of junior Ashley Sharp and sophomore Ciara Incorvati, Lakota West – No. 3 in The Enquirer’s preseason poll – out pitched and out hit rival No. 2 Lakota East in a 5-0 win on the road Monday.

Coming into the game, Incorvati didn’t look like it, but she was nervous.

It was the first time that the Lakota West sophomore played in the one of the region’s biggest softball rivalries north of I-275.

In her first at-bat, she found herself in front of Lakota East senior pitcher Lea Buckenmyer, who entered the game with 197 career strikeouts in 215 innings and a win-loss record of 43-11.

Experience didn’t win this battle, however, as Incorvati smacked a Buckenmyer fastball to left-center field for a double. Two batters later, Incorvati scored the game’s first run on a soft ground ball that sophomore Haley Johnson tapped up the middle of the infield with two outs in the second inning.

“I was a little nervous because it was my first varsity game playing East, but we all have each other’s back on this team,” said Incorvati, who went 3-for-4, with two doubles and two runs batted in. “My bat just came alive today.”

Incorvati’s lively bat was infectious as West piled up 9 hits and 5 runs to win the first of two matchups that will be played between the two school district rivals. Game 2 will take place April 29 at Lakota West.

After doubling in the second inning, Incorvati doubled in a run in the third inning and singled home another in the fifth inning.

As well as stepping up at the plate, the varsity rookie also played a key role behind the plate.

“She is doing great, calling the game behind the plate and hitting,” Sharp said. “She is one of the best blockers that I ever pitched too. I can trust her back there.”

That trust helped Sharp, who is committed to Wright State, strike out 5 in 7 shutout innings. Sharp also had a no-hitter going into the sixth inning, which was broken up by sophomore second baseman Kylie Dempsey.

“I try not to think about it. The minute you think about it, it gets broken up,” Sharp said about her no-hitter opportunity. “They just started to hit, but they are good hitters.”

After Dempsey, junior outfielder Brooke Dendler singled to give the Thunderhawks two base runners with no outs and the heart of their order coming up. Sharp was able to get the next three hitters out in order without giving up a run.

In the 7th, Sharp walked junior first baseman Taylor Fair to begin the inning and then gave up a double to junior third baseman Gracie Sprockett. Again, with no outs and two runners on, the Thunderhawks failed to score.

The biggest scare for the Firebirds, however, came in the third inning when junior center fielder Alyssa Hedric slid into Lakota East freshman catcher Mackenzie Rieck at a play at the plate. The tag was late and Hedric scored, making the score 2-0 at the time, but Hedric’s left knee buckled as it made contact with Rieck’s left foot.

After the play, Hedric, who is committed to Miami University, grabbed her knee in pain and didn’t return to the game. After the win, Hedric had ice on her injury and said the knee felt “a little tight.” Lakota West coach Keith Castner said that she will have the knee looked at on Tuesday.

W – Sharp (3-2, 5 K’s); L – Buckenmyer (1-2, 4 K’s). Leaders: LW – Hedric 2B; Brown 2-3, 2 RBIs; Cummins RBI; Incorvati 3-4, 2 2Bs, 2 RBIs. LE – Sprockett 2B. Records: LW (4-3, 4-0 in GMC); LE (1-2, 1-2).

LAKOTA WEST MANAGER BILL DREISBACH TALKS BASEBALL

It might not feel like spring, but the baseball and softball seasons are about to begin for the Lakota East and Lakota West varsity teams.

The Lakota West baseball team (18-12, 13-5 in Greater Miami Conference in 2012) finished the 2012 season in second place in the GMC. East (16-14, 10-8 in the GMC), on the other hand, finished in fourth place in the GMC.

Both teams are included in the 2013 Cincinnati Enquirer preseason poll.

In softball, Lakota East and Lakota West are ranked No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, in The Enquirer’s preseason poll.

The Enquirer’s Adam Baum recently included a blurb on both clubs in his softball preview.

Lakota East and Lakota West are each a year removed from district titles, but both schools are well-coached and capable. Lakota East, ranked No. 2, has won at least 22 games in each of the last five seasons. The Thunderhawks have six returning starters led by senior pitcher Lea Buckenmyer (signed with Goshen College) who was second-team All-Ohio and first-team All-Enquirer as a junior. Buckenmyer went 19-7 with 133 strikeouts and a 1.20 ERA; she also hit .432 with 14 doubles and 43 RBI.

Lakota West has seven starters returning from last season’s 23-win team. The trio to watch for the Firebirds are juniors Kat Burbrink, Alyssa Hedric and Ashley Sharp. All three have started together since they were freshman. Sharp (committed to Wright St.) was first-team All-Enquirer last season with a 20-5 record, 11 shutouts and a 1.09 ERA. Burbrink and Hedric, both outfielders, combined for 19 doubles and 56 hits last season.
