Lakota East Theater presents ‘The Secret Life of Girls’

Posted by akiefaber March 18th, 2013, 11:34 am Post a Comment

Lakota East High School’s Thunderhawk Theater and its newly founded Zonta Club have partnered to present a community event that focuses on the struggles faced by young women in today’s society.

In its production of “The Secret Life of Girls,” 7 p.m. Friday, friendly athletic competition among a group of girls takes a spiraling turn as each girl’s personal battles surface.

Each character confronts real life issues and in the end, resolves to change her ways. An educational performance on the affect of bullying reestablishes that girls are not alone in their fight.

“Everyone has faced the perilous trials of junior high,” said Kristen Statt, who teaches East’s acting classes, among other classes at East. “It’s a tumultuous time in every young girl’s life and is not as easy as everyone may believe.”

The production is the culminating project of this year’s Acting II and III classes. While the female students will assume acting roles, the male students will serve as directors, stage managers and technical directors. Following its debut, the group hopes to take the show on the road and perform at some of Lakota’s junior schools.

“Let’s Talk” is the title of the Zonta Club’s video that extends the discussion into the realm of the high school girl. East’s new Zonta Club, advised by Jill Kelechi, is an empowerment group for young women trying to impact the lives and minds of their peers. The Zonta Club seeks to bring attention and discussion to the unseen struggles in the daily lives of young women.

The community is invited to explore these struggles through a multimedia performance and facilitated discussion in the Lakota East Theater. Admission is free. For more information, contact the Thunderhawk Theater at 755-7211 ext. 15305.

Posted by akiefaber December 27th, 2012, 7:44 am Post a Comment

Voter turnout was low in the latest series of Cincinnati Enquirer coaches’ polls. However, despite receiving only one first-place vote, Lakota East was able to claim the top spot in the boys’ basketball poll this week for the first time this winter.

The Thunderhawks have won their first nine games and are also 4-0 within the Greater Miami Conference.

Senior Stedman Lowry, who is committed to Hillsdale College, leads Lakota East with 19.2 points per game. Lowry has made 47.5 percent of his field goal attempts (56-of-118), 44.7 percent of his three point shots (21-of-47) and 93 percent of his free throws (40-of-43) this season.

Last winter, Lowry tore his ACL just five games into his junior season. Prior to the injury, Lowry was averaging 17.5 points and 7 rebounds per contest.

WestChesterBuzz.com’s top 12 stories of 2012: No. 12

Lakota East beats West and wins first playoff game

WestChesterBuzz.com will count down the area’s top 12 stories of 2012 this month, concluding with West Chester’s most discussed topic of the year on Sunday, Dec. 30.

Photo gallery of the entire football season, starting from summer camp to the playoffs. Images provided by The Cincinnati Enquirer, Barb Trimble of TrimPhotoAndVideo.com and WestChesterBuzz.com.

After losing back-to-back games against Sycamore and Mason in October, Lakota East appeared to have no shot at the postseason. However, the Thunderhawks bounced back with wins against Fairfield and Lakota West in the final weeks of the 2012 season and earned in its first postseason berth in school history.

The West win, which snapped a seven-game losing streak against its rival, and the extra points earned when Northmont, a team Lakota East defeated in Week 1, defeated Wayne in the final week of the season gave the Thunderhawks enough to sneak into the No. 7 seed in the OHSAA Region 4 postseason bracket.

Once in, Lakota East defeated No. 2 seed Springboro in its regional quarterfinal matchup.

In that game, The Panthers tied the score, 38-38, with less than a minute to play. In overtime, junior quarterback Eric Eichler put Lakota East on top by scoring on a six-yard run. On Springboro’s overtime possession, the Thunderhawks defense stopped senior Rahman Hardin before he could cross the goal line on a 4th-and-goal from the 2-yard line.

The following week, the Thunderhawks jumped out to 7-0 lead against Moeller in the regional semifinals. The Crusaders, however, were able to cruise to a 46-20 win thanks in large part to the performance of Northwestern commit Keith Watkins, who rushed for three second quarter touchdowns.

“Obviously we are really proud of our kids. We just wish we would have played better at the end here, but our seniors did a great job and I thought they battled back and fought hard in the second half,” Lakota East head coach Rick Haynes said after the game.

The loss also ended the high school career of 26 seniors.

“I hope when they look back they will be very, very proud of what they accomplished and not just focus on this one game,” Haynes said.

A few weeks later, Moeller won its eight state championship by defeating Toldeo Whitemer, 20-12, in Canton.

This story was the only Lakota High School sports story to make WestChesterBuzz.com’s list of top 12 stories in 2012. There were many other stories that just missed the cut. See below for a few stories that were honorable mentions.
