Lakota graduation ceremonies – Lakota East and Lakota West high school seniors attended their last day of class last week and will take part in commencement this Saturday. Both graduation ceremonies are scheduled for Saturday at Miami University’s Millett Hall. Lakota East will begin its ceremony at 10 a.m., followed by Lakota West’s at 2 p.m. Tickets are not required to attend and doors open to the public one hour prior to the start of each ceremony.

5K to benefit Parkinson’s – The 5K Steady Strides Run & Walk for Parkinson’s Disease will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday on the track of Lakota West High School in West Chester. In addition to 5K, there’s a shorter route available and a Little Strides fun run for children. Party with free food, music, a raffle and an awards ceremony for teams and racers will follow race. Benefits Tri-State Parkinson’s Wellness Chapter.

Volunteer for World Hunger Day – A Liberty Township-based group is asking for the community’s help to prepare and pack nutritious meals for children on Saturday – World Hunger Day. Kids Against Hunger has two sessions during which volunteers are needed to pack its vacuum-sealed, nutrition-rich meals for shipment. Individuals or groups can sign up to work from 9 a.m. to noon or from 1-4 p.m. For more information or to sign-up, call 513-771-2244.

Baby Boom Kid Bloom – EnterTRAINment Junction in West Chester is hosting the Baby Boom Kid Bloom Expo on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The free expo will feature various exhibitors, who specialize in healthcare, retail, educational and informational services.

Farmer’s Market at the Square – The farmers’ market season in West Chester Township began a few weeks ago and will take place every Saturday through October from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Square at Union Centre, 9285 Centre Pointe Drive. The farmers’ market features all local vendors with produce and meats grown and raised locally and products made by hand.

Free CPR class – The West Chester and Liberty Township Fire Departments will host a free CPR class for the community as a nod to EMS Week (May 19-25). Those in attendance will receive a certification card at completion of the course. The class will be offered beginning at 09:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 1 at West Chester Fire Station 71 on Cincinnati-Dayton Road.

Fifth Third Concert Series – The free Saturday concerts at Keehner Park are back for another summer. The concert series kicks off this Saturday with Blue Stone Ivory. The concerts take place from 7 to 9 p.m. The concert series will end in early September.

Following with tradition, each school’s valedictorian and salutatorian will have an opportunity to address their peers, among other family and friends in attendance. This year’s valedictorians are Emily Chao (Lakota East) and Carly Bratton (Lakota West). The salutatorians are Lea Buckenmyer (Lakota East) and Jared Hance (Lakota West).

Graduating seniors are also invited, but not required, to attend baccalaureate ceremonies. For Lakota East, this will be held on Tuesday at Princeton Pike Church of God at 7:30 p.m. and for Lakota West on Thursday at Tri-County Baptist Church at 7:30 p.m.

LakotaTV, a student-led television network, produced a highlight video of the Lakota East High School commencement ceremony, which took place June 3 at Miami University’s Millett Hall.

LakotaTV is also seeking votes for its entry in the Ohio Children’s Trust Fund 2012 video contest. The only way to vote and support LakotaTV in this contest is to “like” the video on its YouTube page.

In Lakota school news, summer school sessions will be offered from June 11-28 and from July 2-20. Morning classes will take place from 7 a.m. until 11:20 a.m., while afternoon classes will take place from noon until 4:20 p.m.

All courses, including the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT), will take place at the Lakota East Freshman School in Liberty Township. Health, government, economics, financial, literacy, sociology and psychology will be offered for original credit, while English, math, social studies and science will be offered for credit recovery only.

Photos: Woodland Elementary student surprised with bike- A Woodland Elementary School third grader was surprised when he was awarded a new bike last Wednesday morning after winning a poster contest promoting safety near schools. Woodland’s Blake Scherer was the only student from Southwest Ohio to win a bike in the Ohio Department of Transportation’s “Every Move You Make, Keep It Safe” school safety contest.

Mahogany’s troubles no secret – Cincinnati Enquirer’s Jane Prendergast took a deeper look last week on the controversial deal to give and loan nearly $1 million in city money to Mahogany’s owner Liz Rogers of Liberty Township, to open her restaurant at The Banks in Downtown Cincinnati.

Lakota students make video for Ohio Children’s Trust Fund – LakotaTV, a student-led television network, is looking to receive votes for its video produced for the Ohio Children’s Trust Fund 2012 video contest. As part of the contest, the OCTF will award $5,000 to four schools. According to Lakota East junior Matthew King, who is involved with LakotaTV, the winners will be scored in six categories. One category is public votes.

Lakota to have highest fees in region next school year – Cincinnati Enquirer’s Michael D. Clark shared the concerns of Lakota student athletes with the pay-to-play athletic fee. Next school year, Lakota’s $550 per sport fee will be the most expensive rate in Greater Cincinnati.

West Chester concert series – The 2012 Fifth Third West Chester summer concert series at Keehner Park is now underway way after Saturday night’s performance from BlueStone Ivory. The free Saturday concerts will take place at the Keehner Park amphitheatre from 7 to 9 p.m. The series ends Sept. 3 with a performance by the West Chester Symphony. The last concert will be the only one in the series to be performed on a Monday.

Lakota East student doesn’t give up on way to graduation – Unable to speak and forced to use a wheelchair, cerebral palsy has made Gregory Nelson’s life difficult, but it hasn’t damaged his personality and it didn’t prevent him from graduating with the rest of the Lakota East senior class on Sunday.

School’s out for summer – Lakota students wrapped up the 2011-2012 academic school year when they were released Thursday on early dismissal. Some students will be attending summer school, which takes place in two sessions from June 11-28 and from July 2-20. Morning classes will take place from 7 a.m. until 11:20 a.m., while afternoon classes will take place from noon until 4:20 p.m.

Military enlistees to graduate from Lakota West Sunday – A total of 23 military enlistees will graduate from Lakota West during commencement at Miami University’s Millett Hall at 1 p.m. Sunday. According to Lakota West principal Richard Hamilton, the high school typically has around 8-to-10 graduates enter the military every year.

Unable to speak and forced to use a wheelchair, cerebral palsy has made Gregory Nelson’s life difficult, but it hasn’t damaged his personality or will it prevent him from graduating with the rest of the Lakota East senior class on Sunday.

Cerebral palsy prohibits Nelson from using his muscles properly. As a result, he communicates and takes tests through a device connected to his motorized wheelchair. When he wants to answer, Nelson taps the left side of his face against a red button that then scrolls through different letters or saved responses that are then shared out loud through the computer’s audio system.

Using the device takes time, making writing assignments and exams for school tedious work. For example, when Nelson takes the ACT this summer it will take him four days to complete.

However, despite his limitations, the senior still excelled in the classroom and will finish high school with a 3.7 grade point average and a scholarship from the Lakota East PTSO.

“The kids all know that he has to do a lot to write or answer and they see just how determined he is,” said Linda Toriac, who has been Nelson’s instructional aide since the 6th grade. “It is exhausting to do some of the same things other students are doing, like big papers or exams. It takes him longer, but he never gives up.”

When asked what he thinks when he hears his story inspires others, Nelson is shocked and says through his device, “Wow, because I don’t think that I do anything remarkable.”

The Lakota East community disagrees.

“I am not sure I have had a student with more physical and communicative challenges than Gregory,” Lakota East special educator Jeff Combs wrote in a letter to the Lakota PTSO scholarship committee.

“When you first see or meet Gregory, it is impossible to miss the multitude of physical challenges that Gregory faces each minute of his life. But, after a very short period of time with him, it is impossible to not be infected by his positive attitude, many talents, intelligence and sense of humor.”

Lakota East staff members know that sense of humor well and openly teased Nelson as he wore his Lebron James Miami Heat jersey Tuesday. With every playful joke, Nelson smiled knowing that his favorite player and team had defeated the Boston Celtics Monday night in Game 1 of the NBA Eastern Conference Finals.

Nelson, who follows James and his other favorite athletes and sports teams on Twitter, wants to have a career in social media and sports.

Like he inspires others, sports inspire him. When asked what advice he would give a younger person with a similar disability, Nelson wrote through his device, “Like Jimmy V said, ‘Never give up.’”

Nelson never will and plans on taking college courses and hopes to find a part-time job next year.

“Gregory is well loved by his classmates and teachers,” Lakota East principal Keith Kline said. “Despite his struggles, he always works hard and has carried a smile on his face. He is an inspiration to us all and a great reminder that the human spirit is unstoppable.”

Prior to senior week in late May, Nelson and his fellow classmates were asked to get sponsors to pay for the upcoming Class of 2012 events. Each student was asked to raise $10; Nelson raised $155 and requested a donation from Kline and other faculty members.

“He basically told me that for each day I didn’t pay, it was going to be 5 percent interest and if I didn’t get to him, he was going to put a hurtin’ on me,” said Clinton Adkins, who taught American History to Nelson his sophomore year.

“He is quite the character.”

Nelson recruited faculty members to confront and collect from Adkins. Once approached, Adkins made sure he paid off his debt.

“With all the challenges he has, he is very inspirational because he always has a positive demeanor,” Adkins said. “I wish other kids, who complain about simple little things in their lives, could have the same outtake that Greg has. He is not just a phenomenal person to be around, but he is an inspiration to every student in his class.”

His classmates showed their admiration for Nelson during last week’s senior assembly where it was announced that Nelson had raised the most money and won a flat-screen television.

The entire senior class then stood up, faced him and cheered, “Nelson, Nelson, Nelson!”

Nelson and the Lakota East Class of 2012 will participate in commencement Sunday at 5 p.m. at Miami University’s Millett Hall.
