Lakota East junior Kyle Vanden Eynden recently completed his Eagle service project when he built a walkway for his fellow band members. The Eagle service project is one of many steps a Boy Scout takes to become an Eagle Scout.
The walkway was needed because Lakota East band students would have to walk across
the yard or go out of their way to get into the building from where the parents would drop them off.
Rainy weather would make the yard muddy, which resulted in dirt and mud being tracked onto the carpet in the band room. During marching band season alone, more than 200 students need to get in and out of the band room each day.
The eight-foot wide walkway required 15 yards of gravel, 2 1/2 yards of sand, and more than 2,100 bricks. Eynden managed all of the materials, which were donated from individuals, various organizations and businesses.
Once the walkway was finished, Kyle planted two new trees and grass along the walkway. He made sure the grass was watered twice a day. (more…)
