West Chester and Liberty townships are not known for their fireworks, which means many residents host their own parties or have to leave their neighborhoods in order to celebrate Independence Day.
In the morning, there is no need to leave. Both the Liberty Township Independence Day parade and 5K Run for Liberty will begin at Lakota East High School. The 5K will begin at 8 a.m., while registration begins at 7. The parade will follow at 10 a.m.
The parade will go from Lakota East High School, down Wyandot Road to Yankee Road and end at Liberty Park behind the Lakota Family YMCA. Temporary road closures will occur along Wyandot and Yankee Roads between 10 and 11 a.m.
Longtime Liberty Township residents Roger and Margaret Egnor will serve as the parade’s grand marshals. The Egnors are active in the township and at Bethany Baptist Church where Roger serves as a deacon. From 1981 through 1989 he also served as a volunteer emergency medical technician for the Liberty Township Fire Department. The couple was also very active in the Lakota Sports Organization.
Earlier this year a portion of Ohio 747 in the township was named after the couple’s son, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Jody Egnor, a 1988 Lakota High School graduate, who was killed 11 years ago in a helicopter crash during Operation Enduring Freedom.
“We want to recognize them and what they have done for the community,’’ said Caroline McKinney, township spokeswoman and economic development director. “So much about them is what Liberty Township is all about.”
Once lunchtime rolls around, there will be plenty do throughout Greater Cincinnati.
Just to the west, Stricker’s Grove, 11490 Hamilton-Cleves Road in Hamilton, will host a free fireworks show at 10 p.m. And, just to the east, Kings Island will have its fireworks show at 10 p.m. Unlike Stricker’s Grove, regular park admission and parking fee applies. However, free admission will be granted to current and retired military with valid military ID.
