Sheila McLaughlin reports:
It’s official. House Speaker John Boehner has a challenger in the May Republican primary race for the 8th Congressional District seat as of Monday.
Liberty Township businessman and Eric Gurr filed his petitions for candidacy, according to the Butler County Board of Elections. The petition still must be checked and certified.
Yet to be filed are petitions from Republicans J.D. Winteregg, a high school teacher from Troy, and Joseph Buchheit, who ran unsuccessfully for a Fairfield school board seat last November.
The filing comes just a few days after the Tea Party Leadership Fund (CBS story), run by radio talk show host Rusty Humphries, announced a $25,000 ad campaign targeting Boehner’s voting record and that the organization is trying to find a candidate to back against Boehner in the election. There’s still no word who that might be.
Boehner has traditionally been the darling among Republican voters in any primary election. In 2010 primary race he took in 85 percent of the vote in a race against Republicans Thomas McMasters and Manfred Schreyer.
The filing deadline for candidates in the May primary is Feb. 5 at 4 p.m.
