People lined up to be among those first in line, while others created a traffic jam trying to get in line for the drive-thru.

Is Lady Liberty mascot considered a sign? – Is the Lady Liberty mascot that waves customers into Liberty Tax Service considered a sign? Sheila McLaughlin of The Cincinnati Enquirer reported last week that West Chester Township thinks it is. The business’ owner says that’s bunk. And a man familiar with signage issues nationwide says he has never heard of such a dispute.

‘High-end’ apartments coming to Union Centre in West Chester? – Two proposed apartment developments, with rents greater than $1,200 per month, will be presented to the West Chester Zoning Commission next month for consideration. Both proposed developments are aimed at appealing to couples and individuals who choose to rent rather than own. Furthermore, both properties will be within walking distance of restaurants, retail and other amenities, as well as some of West Chester’s biggest employers.

Focus13 Learning Center opens in Olde West Chester – Former intervention and reading specialist Thomas Spotts grew tired of teaching students to tests. Instead of helping the school district achieve better scores, Spotts decided that he would much rather help children become better students. That was his reasoning for leaving teaching after 25 years in different school districts throughout Ohio to open the Focus13 Learning Center in Olde West Chester.

Butler County child services leader replaced – Sheila McLaughlin reported last Thursday that Butler County Commissioners appointed a new leader to manage the children services agency after social workers were accused of ignoring calls that a 12-year-old Middletown girl was being locked in a basement.

Lakota West guard Ali Barnes nets a pair of collegiate offers – Lakota West senior guard Ali Barnes recently netted offers to play college basketball at Findlay and Saginaw Valley State, according to Lakota West head coach Sean Van Winkle. Barnes has already received an offer from Fairmont State and recently visited Lake Erie College. He also has received interest from Eastern Kentucky.

Eric Gibbons moved from California at a very young age and he is sure he has eaten at Jack in the Box before, but can’t remember what it tastes like.

To find out, Gibbons decided to among the first to eat at the fast-food chain’s first location in Ohio, when Jack in the Box celebrated the grand opening of its West Chester restaurant Monday morning.

Gibbons of Springboro was among the many in line, which wrapped around the restaurant prior to the opening, who was there for a special reason.

Also among the crowd was Aaron Hildebrand, his wife Amy and their two children. Aaron had grown to like Jack in Box while spending time in San Diego and Los Angeles. And on a recent family trip to Houston, their five-year-old Jude tried and loved the chain’s burgers.

Ever since, Jude has made his parents drive by during construction of the West Chester restaurant – pointing out updates – anxiously waiting for it to open.

At times, prior to the opening, Jude’s parents had to convince him that construction workers were just taking a lunch break and food is not being served yet.

Jude said that his favorite things are the hamburgers and cheeseburgers. Meanwhile, his dad likes the milkshakes and said, “There is something about those tacos.”

He is not the only one who likes the tacos, which are 99 cents for a pair. According to Sean Lockovich, who is a regional marketing manager with Jack in the Box, the tacos and the all-day full menu (customers can order breakfast at night or a burger in the morning) are the main reasons people flock in the restaurant.

“People come in and want to order, 30, 60, 100 tacos in the drive-thru,” Lockovich said. “It is pretty impressive.”

It didn’t take 100 tacos to back up the drive-thru on Monday, as cars clogged the Tylersville Road exit off I-75 before the restaurant even opened.

If you wanted to go to the restaurant today or avoid the traffic, the West Chester location, 7425 Tylersville Road, is located off I-75 (off the Tylersville exit), in an old gas station lot that is directly next to a Long John Silver’s. The restaurant features 24/7 drive-thru and dining-room service.

In addition to that location, Jack in the Box is planning to open its second restaurant in Cincinnati at 5234 Ridge Ave. across the street from Burlington Coat Factory, off I-71. That location is projected to open in mid-October.

The ribbon cutting will take place at 8:45 a.m., after which the fast-food chain will open its doors at 9. According Jack in the Box spokesman Brian Luscomb, a special giveaway is planned for the first 500 guests.

The West Chester location, 7425 Tylersville Road, is located off I-75 (off the Tylersville exit), in an old gas station lot that is directly next to a Long John Silver’s.

In addition to that location, Jack in the Box is planning to open its second restaurant in Cincinnati at 5234 Ridge Ave. in Pleasant Ridge across the street from Burlington Coat Factory, off I-71. That location is projected to open in mid-October.

According to Luscomb, the new restaurant in West Chester is staffed with more than 130 local residents and features a bright and inviting dining room, which can accommodate up to 52 guests inside and 15 guests on its patio. The restaurant will also feature 24/7 drive-thru and dining-room service.

For those who are not familiar with the hamburger chain based out of San Diego, it features a diverse menu.

“We feature hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, French fries, ice cream shakes and some of the core products that are typical of a fast-food hamburger restaurant,” Luscomb said. “But we also offer choices like teriyaki chicken bowls, chicken fajita pitas, salads, stuffed jalapenos, egg rolls – items that you don’t typically find or are not offered at major chains.”

Also unlike other fast-food chains, Jack in the Box offers its full menu, all day, so customers can order breakfast at night or a burger in the morning. The chain is also known for its inexpensive tacos, which are two for $1.

Another case of whooping cough reported at Lakota school – Twice last week, the Butler County Health Department emailed Lakota parents, alerting them that a student had been diagnosed with Pertussis, which is more commonly known as whooping cough. On Tuesday, the email, which was also sent out in a letter, said a student from Lakota West High School had been diagnosed with the disease. Then on Thursday, the email alerted parents of a student at Endeavor Elementary.

Without the donated heart, Asia, who was born with multiple heart defects, likely would have died within days, the doctor who performed the surgery said.

‘Game changer’ development coming to Liberty Twp. – Sheila McLaughlin of The Cincinnati Enquirer provided an update on Liberty Town Square, the $300 million retail, office, entertainment and residential project – the largest development to hit Butler County. The opening for the destination has been pushed back to spring 2015 from fall of 2014.

“We have been very diligent expanding into new markets,” Luscomb said. “We want to make sure that it is the right market and that it has a high level of brand awareness where people know what Jack in Box is and what it is all about.”

The West Chester location, 7425 Tylersville Road, is located off I-75 (off the Tylersville exit), in an old gas station lot that is directly next to a Long John Silver’s.

In addition to that location, Jack in the Box is planning to open its second restaurant in Cincinnati at 5234 Ridge Ave. in Pleasant Ridge across the street from Burlington Coat Factory, off I-71, sometime in October.

Cincinnati is the latest market in the Midwest for Jack in the Box, which has 70 locations in the St. Louis area and opened a location this past January in Indianapolis.

For those who are not familiar, Jack in the Box is a hamburger chain based out of San Diego that features a diverse menu.

Jack in the Box looking to hire 200 local workers – A spokesperson with Jack in the Box announced last Wednesday that the company has hired its management teams for its soon-to-open Cincinnati area restaurants and is now focused on filling about 200 team member positions. The West Chester location, which is expected to open in mid-September, will be the first Jack in the Box restaurant to open in the state of Ohio.

Butler County tourism generates $900 million in 2011 – The Butler County Visitors Bureau (BCVB) cited a statewide study when it recently announced that the county’s tourism industry generated $900 million in sales for local businesses in 2011. The research study was organized by the Ohio Department of Development’s Office of Tourism Ohio and conducted by Longwoods International and Tourism Economics, according BCVB officials.

AK Steel reports loss, suspends dividend – AK Steel on Tuesday reported a net loss of $724.2 million for the second quarter, or $6.55 a share, and announced that it will suspend its dividend, which it says will save $22 million a year. The results were impacted by a non-cash charge of $736 million for a valuation allowance for the company’s deferred tax assets, the company said.

Liberty Twp. tax budget shows few changes for 2013 – Liberty Township’s 2013 budget is going to look a lot like this year’s officials say, Sue Kiesewetter reported for The Cincinnati Enquirer last week. The budget shows a projected beginning balance Jan. 1 of $17.6 million. Revenues from property taxes are estimated at $8.3 million and from other sources at $11.4 million. Appropriations for 2013 are projected at $20.9 million, with an ending balance on Dec. 31 estimated at $16.6 million.

A spokesperson with Jack in the Box announced Wednesday that the company has hired its management teams for its soon-to-open Cincinnati area restaurants and is now focused on filling about 200 team member positions.

Brian Luscomb of Jack in the Box said the positions are for workers with strong customer service skills who may or may not have a lot of work experience. The company is also offering benefits, such as medical, dental, vision, vacation time and flexible scheduling.

Even though the company is now targeting a mid-September opening date for its West Chester location and an October opening for the location in Pleasant Ridge, it is still hoping to fill the bulk of open positions in the next few weeks.

According to people close to the new Mellow Mushroom and Jack in the Box locations currently being constructed in West Chester, the two anticipated chains may not open until late summer.

Kevin Molony, who also owns the Mellow Mushroom in Wilder, Ky., said on Friday that the opening for his West Chester restaurant will take place in late August. The location is in the former Rafferty’s at 9238 Floer Drive and Union Centre Boulevard.

Molony also said that the West Chester location is going to be “totally unique” and will feature an amusement park theme. The restaurant will feature a mushroom tree and ticket counter hostess stand, an arcade-type retail display, a $10,000 liquor display, a roller coaster car suspended from the ceiling, a lighted Zoltar art piece, the world’s largest marble and an open kitchen design where visitors can watch pizza dough being thrown.

Lakota educators honored – The Community Foundation of West Chester/Liberty recently honored two educators awarding each of them its Lakota Educator of Excellence Award. Jenny Haynes, a second grade teacher at Woodland Elementary, and Tim Shaffer, assistant principal at Lakota West High School, received the awards and were selected from nominations received from peers, parents and students in the community.

AK Steel posts $11.8 million first-quarter loss – West-Chester based AK Steel posted an $11.8 million first-quarter loss last Tuesday with lower shipments cutting into sales. The loss amounted to 11 cents per share. During the same period last year, the company had a profit of $8.7 million, or 8 cents per share. The company said that it expects to post a profit for the second quarter, but didn’t release specifics.

Butler County judge faces sexual harassment complaint – A court reporter has filed a complaint against a Butler County common pleas judge saying he retaliated against her after their 9-year extra-marital affair ended when his wife found out in December, according to The Enquirer’s Sheila McLaughlin. Jennifer Olivier said Judge Michael Sage, who has been on the bench since 1991, “abused his judicial authority” by directing his staff and others at the courthouse to treat her harshly and intimidate her, according to a complaint she filed with Court Administrator Gary Yates this April.

Kyle Meadows thinking FSU – Lakota West offensive tackle Kyle Meadows has more than 15 offers and is leaning towards going to Florida State to continue his football career. The junior suffered an injury this fall, but has worked hard to get healthy and has been awarded with a lot of attention from college football coaches.

West Chester announces dates for nature programs – West Chester Township recently announced the dates for 2012 sessions of its Nature Basket and the WOLF programs. Each program is geared to teaching children about nature and the environment. All nature programs are offered free to the community, but class size may be limited.
