Lakota West holds off Hamilton’s comeback attempt

Lakota West bested its win total from last season when it won game number 11 after defeating Hamilton by the score of 47-42 Saturday. The win is the Firebirds fifth in the last six games.

Lakota West at Lakota East Hamilton almost spoiled the moment by coming back from a 28-9 second quarter deficit. The Big Blue went on a 13-0 run and trailed 43-42 with 22 seconds left in the game.

The Firebirds were able to hang on, thanks in part to four consecutively made free-throw attempts by freshman Lauren Cannatelli. The freshman finished with a team-leading 15 points.

Jillian Spurlock led Hamilton in the loss with 16 points and eight rebounds.

In its next scheduled game, Lakota West will host Notre Dame (Ky.) at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Meanwhile, Hamilton will visit Princeton (15-3 overall, 11-1 in the Greater Miami Conference) at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Lakota East ends losing streak by defeating Big Blue

Lakota East put in end to its six-game losing streak when it defeated Hamilton by the score of 61-54 Friday. Meanwhile, with the loss, Hamilton extended its losing skid to six games.

Lakota West at Lakota East The Thunderhawks led by a balanced scoring attack, which included junior Robbie Harpring (11 points, four assists), freshman Dylon Lowry (11 points, three assists), freshman Myo Baxter (nine points, 12 rebounds), sophomore Eric Eichler (10 points in 12 minutes) and junior Zach Panzeca (12 points, made six-of-seven field goal attempts), defeated the Big Blue for the second time this season.

A pair of sophomores Quintin Bailey (10 points) and Christian Jones (12 points); and a pair of seniors Torrell Sutton (10 points, 11 rebounds) and Breon Boyd (11 points) led Hamilton in the loss.

In its next scheduled game, Lakota East will visit school district rival Lakota West (11-6 overall, 8-3 in the Greater Miami Conference) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Hamilton will also be in action at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday when it hosts Oak Hills (7-9 overall, 5-6 in the GMC).

Thunderhawks rebound with 58-24 win against Big Blue

Lakota East bounced back from its first loss of the season and defeated Hamilton by the score of 58-24 Wednesday.

Lakota West at Lakota East Senior forward Molly Blomer finished with 20 points to lead the Thunderhawks. Senior teammates Bernice Satterwhite (11 points) and Alyssa Grevenkamp (13 points) each scored in double figures.

The win improves Lakota East to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the Greater Miami Conference this season. Meanwhile, the loss drops the Big Blue’s record to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in the GMC.

The Thunderhawks are scheduled to play Ursuline (5-3 overall, 2-1 in the Girls Greater Cincinnati League) Dec. 29, while Hamilton will participate at the Harrison Invitational Dec. 28-29.

Lakota West rebounds with win against Hamilton

Thanks to a good fourth quarter, the Lakota West Firebirds were able snap a two-game losing streak and defeat previously unbeaten Hamilton by the score of 41-29 Saturday.

Lakota West at Lakota East Lakota West led 22-20 at the start of the fourth quarter and outscored the Big Blue 19-9 in the final frame.

Entering the contest, the Firebirds had lost to two of Greater Miami Conference’s top teams in Sycamore and Lakota East. Prior to those losses, Lakota West had started the year 4-0.

Sophomore center Elisabeth Carter produced career highs in minutes with 20, rebounds with 4 and in points with 9. Senior teammates Shabazz and Summer Reeves each scored 7 points, while freshman Lauren Cannatelli had 8 points and 4 rebounds.

Defensively, Lakota West had 15 steals and helped to force the Big Blue into committing 31 turnovers.

Hamilton junior guard Jillian Spurlock led all scorers with 10 points. Senior teammate Desiree Ash had a season low 5 points, but also finished with a season high 12 rebounds.

Lakota West (5-2 overall, 2-2 in the Greater Miami Conference) will host Mason (4-1 overall, 4-1 in the GMC) at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Meanwhile, Hamilton (5-1 overall, 3-1 in the GMC) will play at Talawanda at 7:30 p.m. Monday.
