Publisher: New Cincinnati Enquirer unfolds Monday

Posted by akiefaber March 11th, 2013, 12:32 am Post a Comment

From the desk of Enquirer Media publisher Margaret Buchanan:

After more than 170 years, thousands of conversations with readers and advertisers and years of planning, we’re excited to introduce your new Enquirer on Monday. You’ll first notice the change in size, but it won’t take long before you start to experience its improved readability and flow.

bildeYou’ll see strong photography and bold graphics in the new Enquirer, but more importantly, you’ll continue to find the same depth and breadth of news coverage you’ve come to expect from us.

Life is busy, and we know you want news and information that fit your on-the-go lifestyle. In its easy-to-hold and easy-to-read size, the new Enquirer does that and much more.

And as a subscriber, you can access all of our most up-to-date news and information on Cincinnati.com, NKY.com, and all of our digital apps for your smartphone and tablet, including Reds and Things To Do. You also get our e-Newspapers, which are electronic replicas of the printed Enquirer. Be sure to take advantage of all your subscription includes by activating your digital account at Cincinnati.com/Activate.

To celebrate the day, we will deliver Monday’s historic first edition to all Enquirer subscribers, including our weekend and Sunday-only customers.

If you don’t subscribe, I encourage you to pick up a copy at one of our retail partner locations.

Once you’ve seen the new Enquirer, I’d love to hear what you think. Complete a feedback form at Cincinnati.com/NewEnquirerFeedback or e-mail me personally at publisher@enquirer.com.

Change sometimes brings unexpected challenges. We have invested tremendous effort and resources throughout the planning process, but if we encounter any issues, we will have teams ready to respond.

Meeting your needs is at the core of what we do. Thank you in advance for your understanding and support as we begin this transition.

While Monday will be the beginning of a new era in our history, it will be bittersweet. The new Enquirer will be printed at Dispatch Printing in Columbus, because the new format requires a complete transformation in printing technology.

Generations of Cincinnatians have dedicated their professional lives to serving Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky readers and advertisers. Since our Queensgate printing facility started full production of the newspaper in 1979, The Enquirer production team has never missed a day of printing. The devotion of these employees to their craft, The Enquirer and this community has been remarkable.

I personally want to thank each of them and their families for their dedication. I, along with their colleagues, have great admiration for their professionalism and devotion.

Editor: New Enquirer fits your hands, your life

Posted by akiefaber March 4th, 2013, 8:41 am Post a Comment

From the desk of Enquirer Media editor Carolyn Washburn:

Our new Enquirer begins in just eight days!

bildeWe are proud to bring a new Enquirer to Cincinnati. And we appreciate the thousands of you who helped us create it. Tens of thousands of you have seen prototypes along the way. Thousands of you have contributed through surveys, focus groups, emails to me and conversations with us in meetings around the community. Along the way, we made changes based on your feedback.

Let me walk you though what you’ll see starting Monday, March 11.

The most obvious change, besides the difference in size, will be the visual impact. We know from our research that people are overwhelmed with information. Everything starts to run together. The most important information, the most moving storytelling, the most exclusive work we do, can get lost in the shuffle.

We also know that information and storytelling come in many forms. Strong, well-played photography inspires people to action. Informational graphics that tell a story by themselves are a terrific way to communicate context and trends and evidence, and readers respond well to them. Our new design will play up storytelling and information through photography, graphics and other design.

The content will flow better. The front page of each section will showcase one or two “cover stories.” Instead of starting three to five stories on each section front (and continuing them all to different inside pages), we will have the cover story and a couple of other headlines that lead you to full stories inside. We will still have the same number of stories in the paper; fewer will start on the section covers. (more…)

Publisher: New Enquirer unfolds March 11

Posted by akiefaber February 25th, 2013, 9:40 am Post a Comment

From the desk of Enquirer Media publisher Margaret Buchanan:

I’m pleased to formally announce that, after more than 170 years in its current form, we at The Enquirer will unfold our new newspaper in just two weeks. Monday, March 11, we’ll debut the new Enquirer in an easy-to-hold, easy-to-read size. We’ll be one of the first newspapers in the country to introduce this new size. It will be easier to navigate with bolder headlines and fewer stories that “jump” off of section fronts. Expect to see vibrant colors and a new approach to storytelling. Most importantly, while the size of the paper will change, we’ll continue to provide the same depth and breadth of news coverage you’ve come to expect from us.

bildeThis change is historic. It has been years in the making, and our readers and advertisers have been along every step of the way. Getting to this point required significant effort and expertise from employees across Enquirer Media, and I want to thank them publicly. I also want to thank our more than 742,000 readers who read The Enquirer each week and our advertisers for their patience. We’ve been as anxious as you are to unfold this new Enquirer.

This new format requires a complete transformation in printing technology. We all know new technology sometimes brings unexpected challenges. We’ll have teams ready to respond if we encounter issues, because meeting your needs is at the core of what we do.

We will celebrate day one – Monday, March 11 – by delivering the first edition to all of our subscribers, including weekend and Sunday-only customers. That Monday edition will include a guide to your new Enquirer and an introduction to the 150 journalists who work tirelessly to bring you the most up-to-date and in-depth news and information across the Tristate. We take seriously our responsibility as a news organization to preserve and protect freedom of the press, a core tenet of the U.S. Constitution. And we’re committed to serving the greater good of our local communities.

Readers across the community continually approach me, requesting we continue to publish a print newspaper. The new Enquirer is more efficient to produce, which allows us to do just that, helping us fulfill our mission of providing news and information that is relevant and actively supports the people and businesses of Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. And don’t forget, your subscription also includes full access to all of our digital content as well. Cincinnati.com, NKY.com, all of our digital apps for your smartphone and tablet, like Reds and Things To Do, and our e-Newspaper come as a part of your Enquirer subscription. Be sure to take advantage of all your subscription includes by activating your digital account at Cincinnati.com/Activate.

Over the next two weeks, Carolyn Washburn, our editor, and I will keep you informed about planned changes and what you can expect from your new Enquirer. In the meantime, you can preview our current print prototype at Cincinnati Public Library branches and other local libraries or view it online at Cincinnati.com/newenquirer.

If you have questions, connect with us at Facebook.com/AskTheEnquirer or at Twitter.com/AskTheEnquirer. And, once you’ve seen the new Enquirer, let me know what you think. Email me at publisher@enquirer.com.

Thank you for welcoming us into your life. The future is bright.
