Liberty Township’s Dudley Woods is the site of the Nov. 10 Walks on the Wild Side program offered by MetroParks of Butler County.

Join an outdoor educator in the park’s parking lot, 5591 Hankins Road, at 10 a.m. for an hour-long walk through the park. Learn how nature prepares for winter and maybe a few tips for your home and family.

The last walk for 2012 will be at 10 a.m., Dec. 8, at the Voice of America Park in West Chester Township. There, participants will learn about and scout for owls.

There is no cost for the walk but vehicle permits are needed and can be purchased at the park’s entrance. There is no cost for the permits for Butler County residents with proof of residence.

A one-day permit is $5 for non-residents or $10 for an annual hangtag.

Families can learn about basic camping skills – including cooking – during three family campfire programs at Dudley Woods.

MetroParks of Butler County is sponsoring the S’more outings at the Liberty Township Park, from 6:30-9:30 p.m., June 26-28.

During each session participants will eat a home cooked meal around an open fire, play outdoor games, complete a craft and learn basic camping skills.

During Tuesday’s session at the park, located at 5671 Hankins Road, guides will help visitors explore the woods and creeks.

Wednesday, rangers will bring animals to the session and Thursday’s theme is pioneer night life.

The cost is $5 per person, per day. Participants can sign up for any or all sessions.

An Ohio author will be the guest leader Saturday for the Walk in the Wildflowers nature hike in the Holliday in the Parks nature program.

Author Robert Henn, author of Wildflowers of Ohio, will lead the 10 a.m. walk at Dudley Woods at the corner of Hankins and LeSourdsville-West Chester roads in Liberty Township.

Participants will be looking for spring wildflowers, edible plants, dragonflies and even spring birds under the direction of Henn and Holliday, a former Liberty Township Parks Committee member and 20-year naturalist.

The walk is free but a Butler County MetroParks vehicle permit is required to enter Dudley Woods.

Butler County residents can get a hangtag by providing proof of residency.

Holliday advises those attending the walk to bring binoculars and field guides. All ages and levels of expertise are welcome. Trails are easy walking but generally not paved.

MetroParks of Butler County is hosting a special night of activities that will include activities that pioneers did after supper. The event will take place Friday, Oct. 28, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Dudley Woods in the Gregory Cabin.

The event will feature hands-on activities, games and stories about what children did before bed time.

The family-oriented is free, but pre-registration is required.
