Lakota East and Lakota West varsity sports schedule

Lakota East and Lakota West will face off in multiple sports this week including bowling, wrestling, swimming and gymnastics. Next week, on signing day Feb. 1, Lakota East will face rival Lakota West in girls’ basketball.

Oak Hills at Lakota West In boys’ basketball, Lakota West has an important home game against Fairfield at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Firebirds (8-5 overall, 5-2 in the Greater Miami Conference) are currently tied with Fairfield (11-2 overall, 5-2 in the GMC) in the conference standings. Both teams are one game behind Mason (12-1 overall, 6-1 in the GMC) and Middletown (9-4 overall, 6-1 in the GMC).

Lakota East snaps three-game skid with win in Berlin

The Lakota East girls’ basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak after holding on to a 51-44 win against Rogers in the Classic in the Country at Berlin High School Monday.

Lakota West at Lakota EastSenior Molly Blomer led Lakota East with 25 points.

At the Classic in the Country event, Lakota East also lost to Reynoldsburg by the score of 58-42 Sunday.

The Thunderhawks will jump back into conference play when they host Middletown (5-8 overall, 1-6 in the Greater Miami Conference) at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Lakota East and Lakota West varsity sports schedule

With the day off from school on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, several Lakota East and Lakota West athletes are participating in holiday invitationals.

Both the Lakota East boys’ and girls’ basketball programs will take part in well-known Ohio prep basketball events.

Lakota West at Lakota East The Lakota East boys (5-6 overall, 2-4 in the Greater Miami Conference) are playing at noon Monday against Vandalia-Butler in the Flyin’ to the Hoop Invitational, which is held at Trent Arena in Kettering.

Meanwhile, the East girls (7-5 overall, 5-3 in the GMC) will face Rogers (Toledo) at 5 p.m. Monday at the Classic in the Country at Berlin High School.

In gymnastics, both Lakota West and Lakota East are competing in the Troy Invitational Monday.

Later in the week, the Lakota West boys’ basketball team (7-5 overall, 4-2 in the GMC) will host Middletown (9-2 overall, 6-0 in the GMC) at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Lakota West drops second game in Classic

Mason at Lakota West

For the second straight day, Lakota West led at halftime by one point only to lose in the Classic in the Country Challenge in Berlin, Ohio. On Saturday, the Firebirds fell to Col. Northland (Columbus) by the score of 39-29 and on Sunday, they lost to Wadsworth by the score of 52-42.

Wadsworth, which is located a few miles west of Akron, trailed at halftime 21-20, but outscored Lakota West 21-9 in the third quarter. Similarly, Lakota West led 18-17 at halftime against Col. Northland and was outscored by its opponent 13-4 in the third quarter.

In the Wadsworth loss, junior guard Summer Reeves led all scorers with 25 points. Reeves (photo) also finished with five rebounds and three steals. Senior teammate Ronni Grandison led the Firebirds with six rebounds.

With the loss, Lakota West record falls to 8-5 overall and remains 4-3 in the Greater Miami Conference.

Next up for the Firebirds is a home game against Hamilton (3-8 overall, 1-6 in the GMC) Wednesday, Jan. 19 at 7:30 p.m.

Lakota West falls to Col. Northland 39-29

Lakota West led at halftime, but lost a low-scoring contest against Col. Northland of Columbus Jan. 15 in the Classic in the Country Challenge in Berlin, Ohio. The final score was 39-29.

Fairfield at Lakota West The Firebirds held an 18-17 lead at halftime, after outscoring Northland 15-8 in the first quarter. However, Lakota West was outscored 13-4 in the third quarter and couldn’t come back.

Junior forward Adrianna McNeal led the Firebirds with eight points. Junior guard Summer Reeves added seven points for Laktoa West in the loss.

With the loss, Lakota West’s record falls to 8-4 overall and remains 4-3 in the Greater Miami Conference.

The Firebirds will play another game in the Classic in the Country today, Jan. 16, against Wadsworth (just west of Akron).

Lakota West’s next home game will be against Hamilton (3-8 overall, 1-6 in the GMC) Jan. 19 at 7:30 p.m.

Lakota basketball roundup

It was a busy Saturday for high school varsity basketball in the Lakota school district. Both the boys’ teams were in action, as well as each of the girls’ teams.

Middletown at Lakota East Both the Lakota East and Lakota West boys’ basketball programs were coming off wins on Friday night. The Thunderhawks had defeated Middletown, 67-39, and Lakota West knocked off Fairfield, 52-41.

On Saturday, both programs faced non-conference opponents.

Lakota East defeats Woodward 64-45: The Thunderhawks jumped out an early lead and went into halftime with a 34-11 advantage. Due to the comfortable lead, Lakota East head coach Wally Vickers was able to play 12 different players in the game. Sophomore Stedman Lowry led Lakota East with 15 points, which was a career high. The win improves East’s record to 9-0 overall. Next up for the Thunderhawks will be a road contest against Fairfield Jan. 14 at 7:30 p.m.

Elder defeats Lakota West 48-44: The Firebirds built themselves a 32-23 lead against Elder in the third quarter. However, the Panthers went on a 10-1 run to end the quarter and eventually squeaked out a 48-44 victory. Sophomore point guard Ali Barnes led Lakota West with 17 points, which was a career high. Sophomore Monty Boykins added 10 points for Lakota West. With the loss, the Firebirds’ record has fallen to 6-5 overall. Next up for the Firebirds will be a road contest against Oak Hills Jan. 14 at 7:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, both the Lakota East and Lakota West girls’ basketball programs continued their winning ways by besting their opponents Saturday. Each moved up in the Greater Miami Conference standings by defeating conference opponents.

Lakota East defeats Oak Hills 65-37: The Thunderhawks won their sixth straight game Jan. 8, when they knocked off Oak Hills by the score of 65-37. Juniors Alyssa Grevenkamp and Whitney Wyckoff each scored 16 points for Lakota East in the win. Sophomore guard Imani Outlaw notched nine assists, which was a career high. Lakota East junior forward Tazzie Shaw missed the game due to an ankle injury. The win improves Lakota East’s record to 9-2 overall and 5-2 in the GMC. Next up for the Thunderhawks will be in the Classic in the Country against Hathaway-Brown at 5:15 p.m. Jan. 16 at Berlin High School.

Lakota West defeats Sycamore 42-34:
After starting the season 1-3 overall and 0-3 in the GMC, the Firebirds have won seven straight including four straight conference games. Lakota West’s latest win was against one of the GMC leaders in Sycamore. Lakota West won by the score of 42-34. Junior Adrianna McNeal scored eight points and pulled down 11 rebounds for Lakota West. The win improves Lakota West’s record to 8-3 overall and 4-3 in the GMC. Next up for the Firebirds will be in the Classic in the Country against Col. Northland at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 15 at Berlin High School.
