Buy a cookie today at Chick-fil-A and help orphans

Posted by akiefaber January 30th, 2013, 9:34 am Post a Comment

Sue Kiesewetter reports:

Two Butler County Chick-fil-A stores are among nine in Greater Cincinnati participating in a Liberty Township-based charity’s fundraiser to benefit orphan care worldwide.

All proceeds from any chocolate chunk cookie picked up or purchased on Wednesday at Chick-fil-A will go to A Child’s Hope International’s orphan care program.

“We hope to be able to share some of the benefit with area groups such (as) Restavek Foundation Back2Back Ministries who care for orphans or kids in foster care,’’ said Larry Bergeron, founder. “It is only one day and we are hoping for a large turnout of people who care for the orphan, the fatherless and the vulnerable child.”

Cookies can be purchased in a one pack, 6-pack, 12-pack tray or 24-pack tray. Orders can be phoned in to any of the restaurants in advance for pickup, or they can be ordered through the charity and delivered anywhere in the United States.

“Unlike ‘promotions’ that many are familiar with … where the company takes a huge slice of the profits, all of these proceeds will go directly to the children,’’ Bergeron said. “The question is this – will people care to help?”

Chick-fil-A restaurants are located at 7733 Voice of America Park Dr. in West Chester and at 3403 Princeton Road in the Bridgewater Falls shopping complex in Fairfield Township.

Controversy over gay rights spurs long lines at Chick-fil-A

Posted by akiefaber August 1st, 2012, 11:07 pm Post a Comment

Janice Morse reports

Pam Plunkett rarely eats meat but even she felt compelled to join the throngs of people who lined up at Chick-fil-A restaurants across the nation Wednesday to show support for the company’s owner to express his opinion about gay marriage.

“I’m a vegetarian, but I’m eating chicken today,” declared Plunkett, 57, a Liberty Township resident who went to the West Chester location on Tylersville Road.

Throngs of people filled the West Chester Chick-fil-A restaurant as the noon hour approached Wednesday — and ‘the lines got longer after I left,’ says Liberty Township resident Pam Plunkett, who submitted this photo, taken around 11:30 a.m.

Even people who disagreed with Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy’s stance against gay marriage came and stood patiently in long lines to demonstrate their unanimous belief: Cathy’s free-speech and free-enterprise rights as an American should be upheld, Plunkett said.

In June, Cathy told the Baptist Press that his Atlanta-based company was “guilty as charged” for backing “the biblical definition of a family.” In response, politicians in cities such as Chicago and Boston vowed to prevent the chain from opening new stores there.

“What’s with these mayors trying to block someone from starting a business? I just don’t feel that’s right,” Plunkett said. “This is America – and there were all kids of people at the Chick-fil-A…who all believe that it’s his right as a business owner to express his opinion.”

Plunkett said she heard about the plan to flood Chick-fil-A’s with business via Facebook. Participating was “a very unifying experience,” she said, because people from diverse walks of life and political and religious persuasions were there. “It was quite a moving experience. It was almost a chilling, tears-in-your-eyes experience.”

Today’s outpouring of support came after Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a Baptist minister, declared today “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day” across the nation. And the Rev. Billy Graham threw his support behind the plan, saying, “As the son of a dairy farmer who milked many a cow, I plan to ‘Eat Mor Chikin’ and show my support by visiting Chick-fil-A,” Graham said in a statement, referring to the slogan in the company’s ads, which feature cows urging people to eat poultry.

Meanwhile, opponents of the company’s stance are planning an event called “Kiss Mor Chiks” on Friday, encouraging people of the same sex to show up at Chick-fil-A restaurants across the nation and kiss each other.

The Cathy family’s Southern Baptist roots are well-known. Ever since Cathy’s father, Truett, opened the first Chick-fil-A in 1967, the restaurants have been closed on Sundays.

Alicia Lang gradLang graduated from Lakota West High School in 2010, but has been fighting the lung disease cystic fibrosis since she was five years old.

Lang is currently listed for a double-lung transplant at Loyola in Chicago and at the Cleveland Clinic. The transplant could take place this summer, but could be scheduled for a later date depending when a lung becomes available.

Registration for the walk will begin at 1 p.m., the walk itself will start at 2 p.m. and all activities after the walk will end at 5 p.m.

Activities include a DJ, a fire truck, food and drinks, popcorn and cotton candy. There will also be a silent auction with items that include a signed football by Dick LeBeau, signed baseballs by Dusty Baker, Brandon Phillips and other Reds players, hand-made baby quilts from Alicia’s “Myrtle Beach” grandmother and gift certificates from local restaurants.

People are also asked to bring in gently used items for a yard sale that is being planned by Girl Scout troop #40935.

Each walker, who raises $50 or more in pledges, will receive an Alicia’s Lungs T-shirt.

Sponsorship brochures and guidelines on securing pledges can be found at facebook.com/aliciaslungs.
