West Chester Hospital

West Chester Hospital will offer free prostate screenings for men ages 50 and older from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb. 9.

The exam, which involves a digital rectal exam and prostate-specific antigen blood test, is designed to detect the early warning signs of cancer.

The American Cancer Society recommends that men should have an annual prostate exam beginning at age 50. Men who fall into high-risk groups, including black men, should begin testing at 45 and those with a family history of prostate cancer should begin testing at 40.

“One of our goals in offering this free event is to encourage all men to be proactive in their health by receiving this potentially life-saving screening,” said Dr. Kevin Joseph, president and CEO of West Chester Hospital. “As a member of the West Chester community, we are extremely proud to play an important role in ensuring a healthy future for our neighbors.”

Reservations are required; space is limited. To register, call 513-298-3278 by Thursday, Feb. 7.

American Cancer Society looking for local volunteers

Posted by rrichardson June 11th, 2012, 4:53 pm Post a Comment

The American Cancer Society is looking for volunteers to assist in a cancer prevention study.

The Study-3, or CPS-3, study seeks men and women between the ages of 30 and 65 who have never been diagnosed with cancer.   ACS hopes to enroll up to a half million people across the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

Volunteer “community champions” are needed to help recruit eligible study participants.

A CPS-3 kickoff will be held from 8-9 a.m. Wednesday, June 20 at West Chester Hospital, 7700 University Drive.

“This is an opportunity of a lifetime for people in our community to get involved and truly make a difference in what we know about cancer,” said Dr. Edward Crane, chair of the Cancer Program at West Chester Hospital. “Through this historic study, local residents who meet the criteria can participate in a nationwide effort to help identify new ways to actually prevent cancer.”

For more information, call 888-604-5888, email cps3@cancer.org or go to www.cancer.org/cps3.

Lakota East athletics raises $30,000 for cancer research

Lakota East state championship celebration

Through two fundraisers this school year, the Lakota East athletic department raised nearly $30,000 for cancer research, according to Cincinnati.com. Its “Hawks for the Cure” series of events this fall raised $6,250 and its “Relay for Life” event this spring was responsible for a $23,000 donation to the American Cancer Society.

“I knew when I took the position that there would be opportunities to open the eyes of our student athletes to new experiences in the area of service,” Lakota East Athletic Director Richard Bryant told Cincinnati.com. “I am extremely proud of our programs and student-athletes – we have made significant strides in each area, but we will continue to strive for excellence year after year in these areas.”

Athletically, Lakota East had an exceptional school year in 2010-2011.

The school won Greater Miami Conference titles in boys’ golf, girls’ tennis, boys’ basketball, baseball and softball. Furthermore, the baseball team won the state championship and tennis standout Zack Mueck finished as the state runner-up for the second straight year.

For more on the story and what Bryant has called the “best year of athletics in the history of Lakota East,” visit Cincinnati.com’s post “Lakota East athletic department helped raise nearly $30,000 for cancer research.”
