Jennifer Edwards Baker reports:
Light rain is moving from the west into Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.
It’s the calm before the storm this morning with a temperature of 69 degrees in downtown Cincinnati.
There’s an 80 percent for showers and thunderstorms today. We could see severe and possibly dangerous storms with winds whipping more than 60 mph and quarter-size hail, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.
The possibility of tornadoes developing is slight, but it cannot be ruled out, said meteorologist Jeff Sites.
“I do not see a big tornado threat,” he said this morning.
This is the same storm system that wreaked havoc across parts of the Midwest on Tuesday, producing strong winds and a possible tornado in St. Louis County, Missouri.
No one was injured, but a state of emergency has been declared.
This storm also spawned a tornado that touched down in Arkansas, destroying dozens of homes and downing power lines. At least four people were injured.
By the time the storm lands here, it will be considerably weaker. There is just a slight chance for severe weather here, Sites said.
The strongest part, the result of a cold front roaring in from the Mississippi Valley, is expected to hit our region about 2 p.m.
That’s a few hours later than weather experts originally predicted, but the approaching front has slowed down a bit, Sites said.
Showers and thunderstorms are likely until 11 p.m., and then we’ll see just rain overnight.
In all, about an inch could accumulate.
Temperatures will remain mild today with a high of 72 degrees. As the storm moves out, colder air will push in. By dawn Friday, the low could plunge to about 43 degrees.
The sun will return Friday, but this weekend will be much cooler with temperatures below normal for this time of year. Friday’s high will only reach 54, about 10 degrees below what we normally see at this point in April.
Friday night will be downright cold with the low falling to 35, just above the freezing mark.
Saturday and Sunday will bring more sun with the mercury hovering in the 50s Saturday before moving into the mid-60s on Sunday.
Overnight lows will remain brisk and in the 30s.
Looking ahead to next week, the mercury will climb back into the mid-70s by Monday and stay there through at least Wednesday. Overnight lows will be in the upper 50s.
Monday and Tuesday look dry, but more rain is in the forecast by mid-week.
