Mason cools off Firebirds in 46-27 win

The Mason Comets (14-6 overall, 10-4 in the Greater Miami Conference) defeated a Lakota West (12-8 overall, 7-7 in the GMC) team, who had won six of its last seven games, by the score of 46-27 Saturday afternoon.

Lakota West at Lakota East Mason senior Brianna Glover, who will continue her career at Xavier University, led all players in scoring with 20 points and in rebounds with 10.

Meanwhile, off the bench, senior Ali Zieverink scored 13 points in only nine minutes of playing time for the Firebirds.

The game officially ends the regular season for both teams.

For Lakota West, the postseason will begin Wednesday at 6 p.m. when it will face Loveland (4-16 overall, 3-13 in the Fort Ancient Valley Conference) at Harrison High School. Mason, on the other hand, will begin its postseason Saturday at 3 p.m. at Lakota East High School where it will play the winner of a Wednesday night matchup between Mt. Notre Dame (5-15 overall, 2-8 in the Girls Greater Cincinnati League) and Anderson (14-6 overall, 11-5 in the FAVC).

Lakota East bounces back with road win at Mason

After losing two of its last three games, the Lakota East girls’ basketball team rebounded with a 62-52 win at Mason Wednesday.

Lakota West at Lakota East Both teams entered the contest in the top four of The Cincinnati Enquirer’s Division I coaches poll. Lakota East is currently ranked No. 3, while Mason is No. 4.

Four players scored in double figures for the Thunderhawks including senior Bernice Satterwhite (16 points), senior Alyssa Grevenkamp (12 points), freshman Cydney Franklin (10 points) and senior Molly Blomer (19 points).

Senior Brianna Glover and junior Kayla McDowell led the Comets. Glover, who is committed to play at Xavier, scored 15 points and had 7 rebounds. McDowell finished with 19 points and 13 rebounds.

With the win Lakota East improves its record to 7-2 overall and 5-1 in the Greater Miami Conference. Mason, on the other hand, falls to 6-2 overall and 5-2 in the GMC.

The Thunderhawks next game will be Saturday when they will host Princeton (9-0 overall, 6-0 in the GMC) at 7:30 p.m. Mason will also be in action Saturday at Hamilton (8-3 overall, 3-3 in the GMC) at 2 p.m.

Firebirds fall to Comets 52-36

After starting out the season 4-0, the Lakota West girls’ basketball team has lost three of its last four games including a 51-36 loss against Mason Wednesday.

Lakota West at Lakota East After being tied at the end of the first quarter, Lakota West fell behind in the second frame and was outscored 14-2 – giving Mason a 21-9 halftime lead.

Senior Brianna Glover, who is committed to Xavier University, and junior Kayla McDowell combined to finish with 34 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists to lead Mason.

Meanwhile, Lakota West freshman Lauren Cannatelli scored a career high 10 points.

The loss drops Lakota West’s record to 5-3 overall and 2-3 in the Greater Miami Conference. With the win, Mason improves to 5-1 overall and 5-1 in the GMC.

Lakota West will be back in action when its hosts the Holiday Hoops Fest Dec. 28-29. The Firebirds will face Toledo Central Catholic at 7:15 p.m. Dec. 28 and will play St. Ursula at 7:15 p.m. Dec. 29.

Lakota West falls to Mason 54-30

The Lakota West Firebirds could only muster up two points in the final quarter in a 54-30 loss to Mason last night, Jan. 26. The Comets defeated Lakota West earlier this season 52-42.

Mason senior point guard Sarah Hunter, who is committed to Wright State, scored eight points, had five assists and four steals in last night’s victory.

Her teammate, junior Briana Glover scored 16 points. Glover, recently, narrowed her list of college choices to the following five schools: Kentucky, Xavier, Dayton, Louisville and Michigan State, according to Pulse Journal reporter Steven Matthews.

Ronni Grandison, who has committed to the University of Massachusetts, led Lakota West with seven points and six rebounds. She only played 13 minutes in the loss.

With the loss, Lakota West falls to 9-7 overall and 5-5 in the Greater Miami Conference. Mason, meanwhile, improves to 10-4 overall and 7-3 in the GMC.

The Firebirds’ next game will be at home this Saturday, Jan. 29, against Princeton (16-0 overall, 10-0 in GMC) at 2 p.m. Mason faces Lakota East (12-3 overall, 7-3 in GMC) at Mason Middle School at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Lakota East bounces back with a 59-50 win against Mason

Mason at Lakota East After losing to Greater Miami Conference foe Sycamore this week, Lakota East was able to bounce back with a 59-50 win against Mason Dec. 11 at Lakota East High School.

On Dec. 8, Lakota East made only 27 percent of its field goals in the 51-37 loss to Sycamore. Against Mason, the Thunderhawks shot much better, making 50 percent of their field goals.

Junior Alyssa Grevenkamp, who made five of six field goal attempts, led Lakota East against Mason with 14 points. Fellow juniors Tazzie Shaw (13 points), Molly Blomer (13 points) and Whitney Wyckoff (10 points) scored in double figures for the Thunderhawks.

The Mason Comets, who defeated Lakota West last weekend 52-42, were outscored 14-5 in the fourth quarter against Lakota East.

Sophomore forward Kayla McDowell led Mason with 16 points. Juniors Sarah Hunter (15 points) and Brianna Glover (eight points) also played well.

With the win, Lakota East improves its record to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the GMC. Mason falls to 2-2 and 1-1 in the GMC.

Next up for the Thunderhawks is a road contest at Colerain Dec. 18 at 2 p.m. Mason’s next game will be at Hamilton Dec. 15 at 7:30 p.m.
