Lakota East seeks high school boys’ volleyball coach

Lakota East High School is currently seeking a boys’ volleyball coach. The school district posted the job opening on its official website Thursday afternoon.

All interested parties should forward a letter of interest and resume to Richard Bryant, who is the athletic director at Lakota East. Emailed letters and resumes are preferred and can be sent to Richard.Bryant@Lakotaonline.com. Mailed letters and resumes need to be sent to Lakota East High School, 6840 Lakota Lane, Liberty Township, Ohio 45044.

This past spring, Lakota East finished with a 17-6 overall record and a 6-2 mark within the Greater Miami Conference.

Lakota spring athletes honored by GMC

The Greater Miami Conference recently honored its student athletes by releasing its all-conference teams. Yesterday, June 8, the baseball and softball All-GMC teams were posted on WestChesterBuzz.com. In total, Lakota had 45 athletes named to all-conference teams this spring sports season.

Overall, it was a very successful spring sports season for the Lakota school district. In baseball, Lakota East won the GMC and the state championship. Lakota East also won a GMC title in softball, while Lakota West shared the GMC title with Oak Hills in boys’ volleyball.

In boys’ tennis, Lakota East junior Zack Mueck (photo) was named the GMC Boys’ Tennis Athlete of the Year. Mueck’s teammate’s Freddy Abunku, who will continue his career at Xavier University, was named to the All-GMC First Team. Lakota West senior Aaron Madaris and Lakota East senior Akash Unakantha were both named to the All-GMC Second Team. Also, Lakota West sophomore Nick Lang was named to the All-GMC Third Team.

In boys’ volleyball, Lakota East senior Wesley Meyer was named the GMC Boys’ Volleyball Athlete of the Year. Lakota West senior Rio Onuki, Lakota West junior Alex Vohland and Lakota East junior Michael Ricke were all named to the All-GMC First Team. Lakota high schools name athletes of the week

Lakota West and Lakota East high schools recently named their athletes of the week. Lakota West honored Melanie Bryan and William Wilson, while Lakota East recognized Anthony Florenza and Colin Sasthav.

Melanie Bryan (photo above) is a senior member of the Lakota West softball team, which recently captured a district title. During the district championship game this past Saturday, May 21, Bryan drove in the game-winning run in a 3-2 victory against Ursuline. Earlier in the game, Bryan also drove in the tying run.

Lakota West sophomore William Wilson placed second in the high jump event at the district track and field meet this past Friday, May 20. Wilson’s second-place finish qualified him to compete at the regional meet, which will take place this Wednesday, May 25, and Friday, May 27, at Welcome Stadium (University of Dayton).

Anthony Florenza is a senior member of the Lakota East boys’ volleyball team. According to EastThunderhawks.com, Florenza is a 4-year participant in the boy’s program and has played three different positions for the Thunderhawks this year. The website also describes Florenza as very reliable and consistent in every aspect of the game.

Lakota East freshman Colin Sasthav’s doubles team made it to the district tennis qualifying round before losing. According to EastThunderhawks.com, Sasthav has been a valuable member of the varsity squad, being the vocal leader of the second doubles team. According to the Greater Miami Conference website, Sasthav and doubles partner, junior Billy Barren, were 6-1 against conference opponents and 8-5 overall this season.

Lakota West at Lakota East

For the second straight season, Lakota East has won the outright Greater Miami Conference title. The Thunderhawks officially clinched the conference title after defeating Hamilton by the score of 6-1 on Wednesday, May 11.

Junior pitcher Blake Wilder improved his record to 4-0 on the season. Fellow junior Alex Corna went 2-for-3, had a double and three runs batted in for the Thunderhawks.

Lakota East finishes up the regular season with a 16-7 overall record and a 13-5 mark within the GMC. The Thunderhawks will begin postseason play today with a home game against Western Brown at 5 p.m.

Softball – Lakota West 4, Middletown 0 – Lakota West senior pitcher Alex Caudill struck out 15 batters in a 4-0 win against Middletown on Wednesday. The win advances the Firebirds to the next round of the playoffs where they will face the Little Miami/Springfield winner on Monday, May 16, at West Carrollton High School at 5 p.m.

Softball – Lakota East 12, Stebbins 1 – Lakota East won its second straight postseason game when it defeated Stebbins (Dayton) by the score of 12-1 on Wednesday. Sophomore pitcher Lea Buckenmyer improved to 5-0 on the year and struck out 10 batters. Lakota East (22-2, 14-2 in the GMC) has scheduled conference games today, May 12, at Oak Hills and this Friday, May 13, at home against Fairfield. Both games are scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Meanwhile, on Monday, Lakota East will play the Beavercreek/Fairborn winner at 5 p.m. at Fairmont High School.

Boys’ Lacrosse – Mariemont 13, Lakota East 5 – The Thunderhawks fell to 3-11 on the season after losing by the score of 13-5 to Mariemont on Wednesday. Senior Zachary Johnson led Lakota East with two goals. Mariemont improves to 12-3 with the win.

Boys’ volleyball –Oak Hills def. Lakota East – Oak Hills defeated Lakota East 25-21, 25-27, 16-25, 25-19, 15-12 on Wednesday. Both teams entered the game near the top of the GMC standings. Oak Hills improves to 15-3 overall and 7-1 in the GMC, while Lakota East falls to 16-5 overall and 6-2 in the GMC.

The Lakota West baseball team advanced past its first-round postseason game by defeating Woodward by the score of 18-0 in three innings on Tuesday, May 10.

Lakota West at Lakota East At the plate, senior Brandon Dowty (2B), junior Zack Farmer (2B), senior Ryan Oltorik (2-for-2), junior Troy Dombart (2-for-3, two 2Bs) and junior Kenton LeVay (2-for-2) led the Firebirds.

The win advances Lakota West (13-10 overall, 9-9 in the Greater Miami Conference) to the next round of the district tournament. The 8th-seeded Firebirds will now have to play the 4th-seeded Anderson Redskins (16-2 overall, 12-2 in the Fort Ancient Valley Conference) this Friday at Anderson at 5 p.m.

Softball – Lakota East 12, Sycamore 1 –
After winning a postseason game on Monday, the Lakota East Thunderhawks played a regular season conference game against Sycamore on Tuesday. The Thunderhawks won that game by the score of 12-1 in six innings. Senior pitcher Sara Pearson improved her record to 17-2 and struck out 10 batters. On the year, Pearson has 194 strikeouts in 116 innings and a 0.30 earned run average. Lakota East will be back playing in the postseason today, May 11, when it hosts Stebbins (Dayton) at 5 p.m.

Volleyball – Lakota West def. Fairborn – The Lakota West boys’ volleyball team snapped a three-game losing streak by defeating Fairborn by the score of 25-8, 25-7, 25-15 on Tuesday. Sophomore Curtis Johnson (four service aces, 15 assists), senior Robert Hasselfeld (10 kills) and senior Rio Onuki (seven kills) led the Firebirds. Lakota West will begin postseason play May 19 at Centerville at 6:30 p.m. and will face the winner of the Beavercreek/Northmont match.

Lakota West at Lakota East

In Lakota West’s last baseball game, junior Zack Farmer was the losing pitcher in a 4-1 loss to Lakota East on Thursday, April 21. Yesterday, April 26, afternoon, Farmer broke a 2-2 tie with a two-run double in the bottom of the fifth inning en route to a 4-3 win against the Lakota East Thunderhawks.

The win moves the Firebirds (10-6 overall, 7-5 in the Greater Miami Conference) into a two-way tie with Mason (9-5 overall, 7-5 in the GMC) for second place in the GMC. Meanwhile, despite the loss, Lakota East (11-5 overall, 8-3 in the GMC) remains in first place in the GMC.

Senior pitcher T.J. Belieu improved his record to 4-1, while senior Jared Schroeder led the Firebirds at the plate by going 2-for-3.

Senior J.D. Whetsel went 2-for-3 and senior Mitch Geers hit a double for Lakota East.

Both teams will host GMC opponents this afternoon. West will host Hamilton (4-10 overall, 3-9 in the GMC) at 5 p.m. and East will host Sycamore (6-5 overall, 6-5 in the GMC) at 5 p.m.

Tennis – Mason def. Lakota East –
The Thunderhawks boys’ tennis program lost its second match of the season when it fell to Mason by the score of 3-2 on Tuesday. Lakota East won its No. 1 singles match and its No. 1 doubles match, but lost all three of the other matches. The loss gives the Thunderhawks a 9-2 overall record and a 7-2 mark in the GMC. Mason improves to 11-1 overall and 7-1 in the GMC. Lakota East will host Loveland at 4 p.m. today.

Volleyball – Lakota West def. Lakota East –
The Firebirds handed Lakota East its first loss of the season when it defeated the Thunderhawks by the score of 25-16, 18-25, 25-15, 29-27 on Tuesday night. Junior Alex Vohland (19 kills), Sophomore Curtis Johnson (23 assists) and junior Brian Fintel (five blocks) led Lakota West. The win moves Lakota West (8-6 overall, 6-1 in the GMC) into first place in the GMC. Lakota East (12-4 overall, 4-1 in the GMC) remains near the top of the conference standings. Lakota West is scheduled to host Wayne tonight at 7 p.m. Meanwhile, Lakota East’s next match will be played at Middletown (3-15 overall, 1-6 in the GMC) on Thursday, April 28, at 7 p.m.

Lakota varsity sports schedule April 25-May 1

Lakota student athletes are back from spring break and will begin today, April 25, a very busy week during the spring sports season. The biggest event could be the annual Coaches Classic boys’ tennis tournament, which will take place Thursday, April 28 and Saturday, April 30. The coaches seed meeting for the tournament is scheduled for today at St. Xavier at 6:30 p.m.

Lakota West at Lakota East Also, at the end of the week, the baseball, softball and tennis state tournament draws will take place. In baseball, Lakota East is currently in first place in the Greater Miami Conference. In softball, the Thunderhawks were ranked No. 1 in the state in last week’s Ohio High School Softball Coaches Association poll.

There are also a couple of Lakota East/Lakota West rivalry games this week. Weather pending, the two schools will face off in baseball Monday, April 25, at Lakota West at 4:30 p.m. and in girls’ lacrosse this Thursday, April 28, at Lakota West at 7 p.m. In the gym, Lakota East will also visit Lakota West to play a boys’ volleyball match this Tuesday, April 26, at 7 p.m.

High school sports roundup: West beats Sycamore

Lakota West bounced back from a 5-0 loss to Fairfield on Monday with a 10-0 victory against Sycamore on Thursday, April 21.

Lakota West softball The Firebirds were led by another strong performance by senior pitcher Alex Caudill, who struck out nine batters in the win. Caudill is now 6-2 on the season.

At the plate, senior Yasmin Battle went 2-for-4 and scored three runs for Lakota West. Her teammates, freshman Ashley Sharp (2-for-4, 2B), junior Jessica Burke (2-for-3) and junior Becka Werth (3-for-3) also hit the ball well.

With the win, Lakota West improves to 9-3 overall and 8-2 in the Greater Miami Conference. After the loss, Sycamore falls to 2-10 overall and 2-9 in the GMC.

Next up on the schedule for the Firebirds is road game at Colerain (4-6 overall, 4-6 in the GMC) at noon.

Softball – Fairfield takes first place -
While Lakota East didn’t play on Thursday; Fairfield earned its 10th conference victory when it defeated Colerain by the score of 5-4. The win improves the Indians record to 10-1 overall and 10-1 within the GMC. Being idle, the Thunderhawks remained at 14-1 overall and 9-1 within the GMC. Both teams will play out-of-conference opponents over the weekend, but will be back facing GMC foes on Monday. This upcoming Monday, East will host Colerain, while Fairfield host Mason. Both games will be played at 4:30 p.m.

Volleyball – Lakota West def. Middletown – Lakota West improved to 7-6 overall and 5-1 within the GMC with a 25-15, 25-14, 25-13 win at Middletown on Thursday. Junior Alex Vohland led Lakota West with five service aces. Senior Rio Onuki (eight kills) and junior Brian Fintel (four kills) also put in solid performances for the Firebirds. Next on the schedule, Lakota West will host rival Lakota East (12-3 overall, 4-0 in the GMC) this Tuesday, April 26, at 7 p.m.

Lakota varsity sports schedule April 18-24

There will be plenty of sports action during Lakota’s spring break. Two of the bigger contests will involve both high schools, Lakota East and Lakota West, as they will battle one another in softball and in baseball this week.

Sara Pearson On Wednesday, April 20, at noon, the softball teams will clash in a game that could help decide the Greater Miami Conference championship. Lakota East (13-1 overall, 8-1 in the GMC) lost to Lakota West (8-2 overall, 7-1 in the GMC) earlier this season by the score of 2-0. The game will feature two of the area’s top pitchers in Sara Pearson (LE – committed to Memphis) and Alex Caudill (LW – committed to Northern Kentucky). The game will be played at Lakota West.

The following afternoon, at 5 p.m., Lakota East will host rival Lakota West in what should be another important GMC contest. Currently, Lakota East has a 7-3 overall record and is alone in first place with a 6-2 conference record. Meanwhile, Lakota West is close behind with a 9-4 overall record and a 6-3 conference mark.

High school sports roundup: West sweeps Fenwick

Lakota West swept its doubleheader against Fenwick on Saturday, April 16. The Firebirds won the first game by the score of 15-5 and the second game 10-5.

In game one, junior Jake Wagner earned the win on the mound, homered and drove in four runs at the plate. Teammate junior Cameron Hicks went 3-for-4, had three doubles and drove in three runs.

In game two, sophomore pitcher A.P. Novak improved his record to 2-0 and struck out seven hitters in the win. Novak was also 2-for-3 with a triple at the plate.

After starting the season 2-4 overall and 1-3 within the Greater Miami Conference, the Firebirds have won six straight. Four of those six wins came against conference opponents.

Next up on the schedule for Lakota West (8-4 overall, 5-3 in the GMC) is a road game at Sycamore (5-3 overall, 5-2 in the GMC) on Monday, April 18.

Volleyball – Lakota West at Beavercreek – Lakota West participated in the Beavercreek Quad on Saturday, winning two of its three matches at the event. The Firebirds defeated Northmont 25-20, 24-26, 25-21; defeated Beavercreek 25-23, 22-25, 25-22; and lost to Lakewood St. Edward 25-23, 25-11. After the weekend, Lakota West’s overall record stands at 6-6. In their next match, the Firebirds (6-6 overall, 4-1 in the GMC) will visit Middletown this Thursday, April 21, at 7 p.m.
