Fienning honored at art exhibition at Xavier

Posted by akiefaber November 23rd, 2010, 4:34 pm Post a Comment

Lakota West junior Kiersten Fienning earned the highest honor awarded at the 2010 Xavier University Regional High School Junior and Senior Juried Exhibition for her sculpture titled “Mistress.”

Fienning’s sculpture (pictured right) was awarded Best of Show at the artists’ reception Nov. 12. The sculpture itself was made from an antique wooden chair.

“I found this lonely chair in a local antique mall. It was luring me in with its rustic femininity with the addition of a cheap price. After I threw it against a wall and broke it apart, the pieces just came together effortlessly. The back of the chair served its purpose as the silhouette. The limbs and head structured it in a confident posture. The hat and steps were its final additions,” Fienning said. “A once distressed and painted over chair transformed into a silhouette of confidence, while still keeping its powerful femininity.

“A simple project proposed by my teacher became something that I owed overwhelming gratitude. She is one of the people who encourages me everyday so I can make not only myself, but her, my family, friends and community, proud of what I create. Simplicity is not an easy thing for me to grasp, but simply put, I am eternally grateful.”

Fellow Lakota West students Will Doughman and Lauryn King were also honored at the event. Both were given Honorable Mention awards for their entries. Doughman entered a color pencil drawing titled “Trinity” and King entered a ceramic tea set titled “Dancing Tea Set.”

A total of 440 pieces of art were entered into this year’s show and 140 pieces were displayed in the Xavier University gallery. Lakota West had 19 students exhibited at the event.
