The Butler, Warren, and Clinton Counties Walk to End Alzheimers on Saturday begins at the pool house at the Wetherington Golf and Country Club.
It is one of five walks scheduled this month and next by the Greater Cincinnati Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.
“The walk is a way for the community to come together in support of these families and the services and programs we provide,’’ said Amy Fecker, special events coordinator with the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Cincinnati.
Registration for the walk begins at 9 a.m. with a remembrance ceremony slated to start shortly before the 10 a.m. walk, said Steve Olding, communications director.
“Different colored flowers will reflect those affected – caregivers, friend, family,’’ Olding said. “There are a lot of different reasons people support this cause in the fight against Alzheimer.”
More than five million Americans are affected by Alzheimer’s, including an estimated 55,000 in the 27-county region served by the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Cincinnati.
It is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
Last year’s walk at Wetherington had about 600 walkers who raised a record-setting $91,000. Altogether $545,000 was raised through the Cincinnati chapter’s five 2012 walks.
Funds raised from the walk will benefit those in Butler, Warren, and Clinton counties.
Participants may register as teams or individuals for the 3-mile walk. There is no entrance fee for the event but walkers are encouraged to solicit donations.
Any registered walker who raises or contributes a minimum of $100 will receive a T-shirt while supplies last, at the walk.
Parking is only available at the Meijer store off Tylersville Road, with shuttle service to the walk site. Participants will walk through the Wetherington subdivision, golf course and nearby business district.
The route is wheelchair and stroller friendly. Leashed dogs are permitted on the walk.
Breakfast will be provided before the walk and LaRosa donated pizza will be available following the walk. There will be informational booths and raffles for themed baskets, restaurant gift certificates and other items.
