Little Alfred carries Colerain past Lakota West 57-44

Posted by akiefaber October 19th, 2012, 11:54 pm Post a Comment

In a battle of the top two teams in The Cincinnati Enquirer coaches’ poll, senior quarterback Alfred “L.A.” Ramsby carried Colerain from an early 17-0 deficit to a 57-44 win against Lakota West at Cardinal Stadium on a wet and chilly night in Colerain Township.

“It was a grind,” said Ramsby, who played for Lakota West as a sophomore. “They started way faster than us, but then we just got on track and we couldn’t be stopped from there.”

No matter how hard the Lakota West defense tried, it couldn’t stop “L.A.,” short for Little Alfred (shares first name with his father), who put up huge numbers – rushing for a career high 230 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries and completing 8-of-12 passes for 158 yards and another score.

“When he plays within himself, he is pretty darn good,” Colerain head coach Tom Bolden said of Ramsby. “There are a lot of good players in this league, but I would rank him right up there with them.”

With Ramsby starting under center, Colerain is 12-1, which also happens to be the Cardinals’ all-time record against Lakota West.

More importantly, the win gives Colerain sole possession of first place in the Greater Miami Conference and improves its record to 9-0 overall and 6-0 in conference play.

A win next week at home against Oak Hills will mark the 13th straight season that the Cardinals either won or shared the GMC title.

“We are who are. That’s it. We are just tough,” Bolden said. “It is our community, its our school, its our fans.

“I just couldn’t be more proud of these kids.”

Meanwhile, after starting the season with an 8-0 record for the first time in school history, the Firebirds failed to keep up with Ramsby and the Colerain offense.

“Obviously, he was the difference maker in this game,” Lakota West head coach Larry Cox said of Ramsby, who played under Cox two years ago. “He provides an element – run-pass threat – and does a great job with it.

“Hats off to him.”

After its 17-0 start that quieted a near capacity crowd, a series of big plays swung the momentum in favor of the Cardinals.

The play that sparked the surge was senior Dejuan Lang’s 64-yard kickoff return that set up the first of eight touchdowns for the Cardinals when Ramsby raced for 31 yards for a score in the beginning of second quarter.

After that, Lakota West just couldn’t keep up with the Cardinals, who produced 509 yards of total offense.

Lakota West and Colerain to battle for GMC title

Posted by akiefaber October 18th, 2012, 1:10 pm Post a Comment

Junior quarterback Malik Grove has helped Lakota West get off to 8-0 start this fall, which is its best start in school history. Photo taken during game between La Salle and Lakota West Aug. 25, 2012 by Joseph Fuqua II.

Heading into last year’s matchup Colerain was on its way to winning another Greater Miami Conference title, while the Lakota West football program was hoping to earn its first conference win of the season.

What a difference a year makes.

This Friday night, the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked teams in The Cincinnati Enquirer coaches’ poll will face off at Colerain High School at 7:30 p.m. in what appears to be a matchup that will decide the GMC title.

And if this year’s game is anything like last year’s, Colerain fans have to be concerned.

Led by its then sophomore quarterback Malik Grove, who began last season as the third stringer, Lakota West scored two touchdowns and recovered two onside kicks in the final three minutes. Eventually, the Firebirds came up two yards short, fumbling the ball on third-and-goal in the closing seconds, falling to Colerain by the score of 24-19.

Colerain senior quarterback Alfred Ramsby began his high school football career as a backup running back at Lakota West. In two seasons at Colerain, Ramsby has a 11-1 record as the starting quarterback. Photo taken by Tony Tribble.

“That may have been a little bit of a turning point because we started to focus on what we had to do,” Lakota West head coach Larry Cox said. “I think too many times you can get wrapped up in who the opponent is, instead of how you are going to play.

“That was sort of the launch pad for our entire offseason.”

It can be easy to put too much focus on the opponent when it is Colerain, which is currently ranked No. 9 nationally in the USA Today Super 25 rankings and has won or shared the GMC title in each of the past 12 seasons.

“Our expectations at Colerain are always the same … we want to win every game,” Colerain head coach Tom Bolden said. “15-0 is our expectation. That is a very lofty goal, but that is what we do.”

Unlike last season, where Colerain entered the game with a 5-1 record and Lakota West with a 1-5 record, both teams are 8-0 overall and 5-0 within the GMC this fall.

Grove, who came off the bench to help lead the comeback by completing 14-of-23 passes for 250 yards and two touchdowns, has been the Firebirds starter ever since – compiling a 10-1 record as the main signal caller.

“He (Grove) is a young man who wants to put the team in the best spot to win,” Cox said. “Malik is not about numbers, other than the win-loss column. That is all he cares about.”

Meanwhile, Colerain’s starting quarterback, senior Alfred Ramsby, who actually was a backup running back at Lakota West as a sophomore, has a similar record at 11-1 as a starter.

“Playing here at Colerain is a whole different environment,” Ramsby said. “The whole town is with you. It is like a love/hate relationship. If you doing good – they love you. If you are doing bad – they still love you, but they are ticked at you a little bit.”

That passion for high school football in Colerain Township stems from a program that consistently wins, especially against Lakota West whom they have defeated 11 times in 12 games and haven’t lost to since 1999.

“I always say, ‘you do have go through Colerain to get to a title,’” Cox said.

“If you are truly a competitor and you truly want to get to that level and aspire to be the best, than these are the games you can’t wait for. These are the games that you think about.”

Game preview: Colerain at Lakota West

Posted by akiefaber October 6th, 2011, 12:01 pm Post a Comment

Colerain

Lakota West (1-5 overall, 0-3 in the Greater Miami Conference) will be seeking its first conference win of the season when it hosts Colerain (5-1 overall, 3-0 in the GMC) Friday at 7:30 p.m. Meanwhile, the Cardinals haven’t lost to a GMC opponent in the regular season since 2008. During that span, Colerain has won 20 straight regular season conference games.

Lakota West: For the most part this season, the Firebirds had played close games this season – winning or losing four contests by six or fewer points. Last week was not one of those close games, as they lost by the score of 47-7 at Middletown. In that game, Lakota West allowed 398 rushing yards to the Middletown offense. Offensively, the Firebirds totaled 69 rushing yards. Despite the poor performance, the Lakota West offense does have some firepower. Sophomore quarterback Tyler Jones is an exciting player, who has thrown for 711 yards (third most in the GMC) and nine touchdowns this season. One of his biggest targets is 6-foot-3 senior wide receiver Kayaune Ross, who has eight receptions for 193 yards (24.1 yards per catch) and four touchdowns. The Firebirds’ offensive MVP this season, so far, is senior running back Marcus Davis. Of the team’s 720 total rushing yards, Davis has 712 and two touchdowns on 148 carries. As a team, Lakota West is averaging 243 yards of offense per game and is allowing 365 yards per game on defense.

Colerain:
The Cardinals are coming off a 56-0 win against Fairfield, where they rushed for 417 yards as team and allowed only 27 rushing yards. Leading Colerain was junior Jackson Sorn, who rushed for 142 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. So far this season, Sorn has rushed for 628 yards and eight touchdowns. Senior quarterback Dustin Smith has rushed for 243 yards and two touchdowns on 33 carries this season. Smith had to take over the starting quarterback duties when junior Alfred Ramsby suffered a knee injury, ending his season in September. Last year, Ramsby was a backup running back at Lakota West. Defensively, Colerain is led seniors defensive back Andre Jones (Cincinnati commit), linebacker Joe Bolden (Michigan commit) and defensive tackle Trae Clark (many Division I offers). Jones, who has four interceptions for 102 yards and a touchdown, is also a dangerous kick and punt returner. Currently, Jones is averaging 9.8 yards per punt return and 30.4 yards per kickoff return. As a team, Colerain is averaging 329 yards of offense per game and is allowing 199 yards per game on defense.

Bottom line: Colerain has been dominating the GMC, either sharing or winning the conference title outright for the last 11 years. This season, Colerain appears to be on track to make it 12 straight years after wins against Mason, Middletown and Fairfield. Meanwhile, Lakota West didn’t get any breaks with its schedule this season and could have a difficult time winning a conference game in 2011. Both teams share one common opponent this fall. Colerain defeated Middletown 21-13 and Lakota West fell to the Middies by the score of 47-7. Colerain, as usual, is the heavy favorite.

Game preview: Lakota East at Lakota West

Posted by akiefaber October 29th, 2010, 8:08 am Post a Comment

Alfred Ramsby Will Mahone

Lakota East (3-6 overall, 2-4 in Greater Miami Conference) visits its rival tonight Lakota West (2-7 overall, 1-5 in GMC) at 7:30 p.m.

Lakota East: The Thunderhawks have lost five straight to Lakota West and haven’t won the rivalry game since 2004. With a win tonight, the Thunderhawks will best last season’s win total – a loss would give them the same 3-7 record of 2009. Last week, Lakota East battled one of the toughest teams in the region in Middletown (9-0 overall, 6-0 in GMC) and lost by the score of 49-35. The Thunderhawks compiled 445 yards of total offense in the loss and actually tied the game, 35-35, early in the fourth quarter. Middletown, led by sophomore QB Jalin Marshall’s performance (308 rushing yards on 20 carries and 4 total TDs), gained 521 yards of total offense. Statistically, senior WR Stephen Sensel has an opportunity to end the season as the GMC leader in receiving yards. Currently, Sensel has 430 receiving yards on 14 receptions (the current leader, Zach Edwards of Middletown, has 451 receiving yards). The Thunderhawks are averaging 263 yards on offense per game and are allowing 352 yards on defense per game.

Lakota West: The Firebirds finally earned their first conference win of the season last week by defeating Fairfield by the score of 26-10. In 2009, Lakota West didn’t lose a single conference game and finished the regular season with a 9-1 overall record (7-0 in GMC). Lakota West, however, lost two conference games this season by one point (14-13 loss at Hamilton and 7-6 loss vs. Sycamore). In last week’s win, senior WR Ben Gooch caught five passes for 112 yards and had two total TDs (1 rushing and 1 receiving). Gooch began the season as Lakota West’s starting QB, but gave way to sophomore Jordan Darling, who currently leads the GMC in passing yards with 930. Another sophomore emerged this season for West in RB Alfred Ramsby (photo), who has 382 rushing yards on 106 carries and 3 TDs this season. Ramsby and junior RB Marcus Davis (405 rushing yards on 133 carries and 4 TDs this season) provide the offense with two rushing threats. Defensively, junior DL Blake Bell has 4.5 sacks this season and junior DB Peair Foster has 3 INTs (2 went for TDs). Offensively, Lakota West is averaging 224 yards per game and defensively it is averaging 279 yards per game.

Game preview: Fairfield at Lakota West

Fairfield at Lakota East - Homecoming

Lakota West (1-7 overall, 0-5 in Greater Miami Conference) will try to win its first conference game of the season when Fairfield (2-6 overall, 1-4 in GMC) visits the Firebirds, tonight, Oct. 22, at 7:30 p.m.

Fairfield: After finishing 6-4 last season, the Indians had high expectations in 2010. However, Fairfield has played poorly this fall. The Indians are coming off a 38-2 loss to Middletown (8-0 overall, 5-0 in GMC) where they were limited to only 11 yards of total offense. The previous week, Fairfield defeated Oak Hills (3-5 overall, 1-4 in GMC) on the road by the score of 27-13. In the win, senior quarterback Jordan Ammon completed 15-of-20 passes for 130 yards and two TDs with no INTs. Ammon also rushed for 99 yards on 28 carries against Oak Hills. On defense, Fairfield features two of the area’s best players in defensive end Robert Mincey and linebacker Marquise Vann. Both Mincey and Vann (photo) have numerous Division I collegiate offers. Mincey has battled injuries this season and Vann recently uncommitted from the University of Minnesota after it fired its head coach. As a team, Fairfield is averaging 195 yards of total offense per game and allowing 308 on defense per game.

Lakota West: The Firebirds continue to lose close football games. This past week, Lakota West led early in the fourth quarter before losing by the score of 19-12 at Mason (5-3 overall, 4-1 in GMC). The week prior, Lakota West lost 7-6 to Sycamore (5-3 overall, 3-2 in GMC) and the week before that it lost 14-13 to Hamilton (5-3 overall, 3-2 in GMC). All three of those teams are currently fighting for a playoff spot, while Lakota West is still winless in the conference. Offensively, Lakota West has a few young weapons in sophomore quarterback Jordan Darling (778 passing yards), junior running back Marcus Davis (405 yards and four TDs on 133 carries) and sophomore running back Alfred Ramsby (351 yards and three TDs on 98 carries). As a team, Lakota West is averaging 226 yards per game on offense and allowing 299 yards per game on defense.

Fairmont at Lakota West

Lakota West (1-6 overall, 0-4 in Greater Miami Conference) will be searching for its first conference victory when it visits Mason (4-3 overall, 3-1 in GMC) tonight, Oct. 15, at 7:30 p.m.

Lakota West: The Firebirds have lost back-to-back games by one point, at Hamilton (4-3 overall, 2-2 in GMC) by a score of 14-13 and against Sycamore (5-2 overall, 3-1 in GMC) by the score of 7-6. Both games were against conference opponents. During the past three weeks, sophomore running back Alfred Ramsby (photo) has been getting the bulk of the carries in the ground game. In those contests, Ramsby has 69 carries for 213 yards. In the first four weeks of the season, Ramsby had 16 carries for 125 yards. Fellow sophomore Jordan Darling leads the conference in passing yards with 753. Darling has also thrown for four TDs and rushed for another. As a team, Lakota West is averaging 245 yards of offense per game and is allowing 302 yards per game on defense.

Mason: The Comets were riding a four-game winning streak before losing last week to Middletown (7-0 overall, 4-0 in GMC) by the score of 69-44. Lakota West had lost to Middletown earlier in the season, by the score 24-13. In last week’s loss, Mason was led by senior running back David Fulcher Jr., who rushed for 206 yards and five TDs on 31 carries. Fulcher Jr. missed most of last season with an injury, but is gaining attention from numerous Division I college programs. He already has an offer from Ohio University. This season, Fulcher Jr. has rushed for 957 yards and 16 TDs on 175 carries. Junior linebacker Josh Dooley leads the defense. Dooley already has 8.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries this season. As a team, Mason is averaging 284 yards offense per game and is allowing 282 yards per game.

Lakota West falls to Sycamore 7-6

Posted by akiefaber October 9th, 2010, 12:05 am Post a Comment

Lakota West football

For the second straight week, Lakota West lost a conference game by one point. This Friday, Oct. 8, the Firebirds lost by the score of 7-6 to Sycamore.

The Aviators took an early lead when they scored on a 15-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Will Bundy from junior quarterback Kyle Sess with 6:49 left in the first quarter.

Lakota West answered back with a 7-yard touchdown pass to junior Josh Kinney from sophomore quarterback Jordan Darling with 6:03 left in the second quarter. The score was 7-6 after junior kicker Lucas Gobell’s extra point failed.

As a team, the Lakota West defense only allowed 133 yards of total offense. However, the Firebirds turned the ball over four times on offense, while Sycamore didn’t commit a single turnover.

A bright spot for Lakota West was the play of sophomore running back Alfred Ramsby, who finished the game with 87 rushing yards on 21 carries.

Another bright spot was the play of Lakota West senior Deionte Carlock, who had 49 rushing yards on seven carries and 44 receiving yards on four receptions in the loss.

Last week, Lakota West lost at Hamilton 14-13 when Gobell’s potentially game-tying extra point was blocked in the fourth quarter.

With the loss, Lakota West falls to 1-6 overall and 0-4 in the Greater Miami Conference. With the win, Sycamore improves to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the GMC.

Fairmont at Lakota West

Lakota West (1-5 overall, 0-3 in Greater Miami Conference) hosts Sycamore (4-2 overall, 2-1 in GMC) tonight, Friday, Oct. 8, at 7:30 p.m. in its homecoming game. West is still searching for its first GMC win after losing 14-13 to Hamilton (4-2 overall, 2-1 in GMC) on the road last week.

Prior to the game, Sycamore had won two straight in conference play – 31-28 vs. Princeton (3-3 overall, 1-2 in GMC) and 28-14 at Oak Hills (2-4 overall, 0-3 in GMC).
