Lakota West fails to stop streaking Sycamore

Lakota West fell to Sycamore by the score of 68-52 Saturday. It was the 14th straight win for the Aves, who are currently in first place in the Greater Miami Conference.

Chloe Pavlech The Aves jumped out to a 31-20 halftime lead. Lakota West failed to make up any ground in the second half.

Senior guard Chloe Pavlech, who will continue her career at the University of Maryland, led all scorers with 19 points. Her classmate, senior Alexis Newbolt, added 18 points for the Aves.

Meanwhile, senior Adrianna McNeal led Lakota West with 14 points. Junior Emily Niehaus and freshman Lauren Cannatelli each added 11 points in the loss.

In its next game, Lakota West will host rival Lakota East (11-5 overall, 8-3 in the GMC) at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Sycamore will also have a home game Wednesday night when it will host Colerain (11-5 overall, 7-4 in the GMC) at 7:30 p.m.

Sycamore hands Lakota East its first loss of the season

In a battle between two of the region’s top teams, Lakota East made only 26.7 percent of its field goals en route to a 42-27 loss at Sycamore Saturday.

Lakota West at Lakota East The Thunderhawks led 13-10 at the end of the first quarter, but managed to score only 14 additional points in the final three quarters. Seniors Molly Blomer (9 points, 6 rebounds) and Bernice Satterwhite (7 points, 6 rebounds) led Lakota East.

Lakota East played for the second time this week without seniors seniors Whitney Wyckoff (Yale commit) and Tazzie Shaw (Marshall commit), who will both continue their basketball careers at the collegiate level.

Wyckoff is out of the season after she tore her ACL in last Saturday’s 50-21 win against Oak Hills. Shaw is currently week-to-week after suffering a concussion in a game against Notre Dame (Ky.) Nov. 30.

Sycamore senior Chole Pavlech, who is committed to Maryland, led all scorers with 13 points. She also finished with 11 rebounds, 6 steals and 3 assists. Fellow senior Alexis Newbolt scored 10 points in the win.

Lakota East (5-1 overall, 3-1 in the Greater Miami Conference) entered the game ranked No. 2 in the Cincinnati Enquirer Division I coaches’ poll, while Sycamore (6-1 overall, 4-1 in the GMC) was ranked No. 3 in the same poll.

In their next game, the Thunderhawks will host Hamilton (5-0 overall, 3-0 in the GMC) at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Sycamore will also be in action at the same time Wednesday when it hosts Middletown (1-5 overall, 0-4 in the GMC).

Lakota East begins conference schedule against Sycamore

The Lakota East girls’ basketball program will face Sycamore tonight, Dec. 8, in what will be the Thunderhawks’ first game within the Greater Miami Conference this season. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Lakota East.

Lakota East, who is 2-0 this season, has wins against St. Ursula and against Notre Dame.

Meanwhile, Sycamore, who is 3-0 this season, has wins against Seton, St. Ursula and Middletown.

Sycamore defeated St. Ursula 42-28, while Lakota East beat the same opponent 68-65.

Both teams are coming off impressive performances. Lakota East defeated one of Northern Kentucky’s top programs, Notre Dame Academy, 61-35, Dec. 1. Sycamore is coming off a 71-10 win against GMC foe Middletown Dec. 4.

In three games this season, Sycamore junior guard Chloe Pavlech (photo), who has orally committed to play at Maryland, is averaging 15.3 points, five rebounds and four steals per game. Pavlech’s fellow backcourt teammates, senior Ashley Schaefer (12.7 points, 3.3 assists and 3.3 steals per game) and junior Alexis Newbolt (seven points, 3.3 assists and 3.3 steals per game) have also excelled this season.

Meanwhile, Lakota East is led by junior Whitney Wyckoff, who is averaging 17 points, six rebounds, 2.5 assists, three steals and three blocks in two games this season. Lakota West transfer junior Tazzie Shaw has also been impressive, averaging 12 points and seven rebounds.

Currently, Lakota East is ranked No. 2 in the Cincinnati Enquirer’s local basketball poll. Sycamore is No. 3. Both teams currently trail No. 1 Princeton in the poll.
