Enquirer poll: Should John Boehner keep his job?

Posted by akiefaber December 10th, 2012, 3:35 pm Post a Comment

Deirdre Shesgreen reports:

John Boehner becomes Speaker

Speaker of the House John Boehner of West Chester became the 61st Speaker of the House Jan. 5, 2011. Photo taken by Michael E. Keating.

Will House Speaker John Boehner be pushed off the fiscal cliff?

The West Chester Republican was already under fire from conservatives angry about his move to boot four lawmakers, who had bucked the GOP leadership, from key committee slots. Now he’s feeling some heat from those worried that he will give in to President Barack Obama’s demands for higher tax rates in their negotiations to reduce the deficit.

Even as Boehner and Obama remain far apart on any agreement, some in the GOP appear ready to pounce if their House leader comes back with what, in their view, is a bad deal.

Several observers say that a move to oust Boehner remains highly unlikely.

Primer: 8th Congressional District Republican primary

Posted by akiefaber March 5th, 2012, 5:14 pm Post a Comment

Amanda Seitz reports

Anyone looking for a David vs. Goliath contest, Ohio’s 8th congressional primary is it.

John Boehner becomes Speaker

Speaker of the House John Boehner of West Chester became the 61st Speaker of the House Jan. 5, 2011. Photo taken by Michael E. Keating.

On the one side, there’s Rep. John Boehner, who as Speaker of the House, is one of the most powerful politicians in the country. He’s an 11-term incumbent. He’s raised more than $12 million for his re-election campaign. And he’s well known among his constituents.

His opponent in the March 6 Republican primary is Batavia resident David Lewis. He is a political neophyte. And he doesn’t even live in the district.

Lewis’ main critique of Boehner in the campaign so far has come on the issue of abortion, saying the West Chester Republican has not fought hard enough for restrictions on the procedure. He pointed to Boehner’s role last year in forging an agreement on the annual federal spending bills, which included funding for Planned Parenthood.

Federal law prohibits Planned Parenthood, which provides abortion as well as other health care services to women, from using any federal funds to terminate a pregnancy. Still, some House conservatives fought unsuccessfully to strip all funding for Planned Parenthood out of the spending bills.

“The main reason I’m running is because 50 million babies have died because of the Roe v. Wade case back in January 1973,” Lewis said. “I specifically targeted Mr. Boehner because he has a 22-year history in the House of Representatives and this whole time, he’s done little to nothing for those babies.”

But Ohio Right to Life says Boehner has one of the strongest anti-abortion voting records in Ohio and in Congress. (more…)

Photos of John Boehner at Ohio State’s commencement

Boehner at OSU commencement

House Speaker and West Chester resident John Boehner addressed students at The Ohio State University commencement exercises this Sunday, June 12. According to a story written by Julie Carr Smyth of the Associated Press, Boehner gave an eight-minute speech to a record 9,700 graduates.

>>>PHOTOS OF BOEHNER AT OSU COMMENCEMENT<<<

Below is an excerpt of Smyth’s article:

Saying his own name was often mispronounced – rhyming with the words honor, leaner, even “boner” – Boehner said, “Thank God it’s not Weiner.” Fellow U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner, a New York Democrat, admitted last week to sexually explicit communications with as many as six women via social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

Graduates assembled under clear blue skies. Many sported shorts and flip-flops under their black robes, and some wore mortarboards decked out with scarlet and gray O’s, sequins, gift-wrap bows, feathers or pipe-cleaner creations. Students held balloons or flags to identify themselves, or scanned the crowd – cellphones to their ears – looking for loved ones.

Boehner told graduates that it is important to work hard, persevere and be humble.

“You know, life isn’t always about you,” he said. “I’m a big believer that everything in life is a two-way street, and being useful to others, being involved in your community, finding some way to serve is part as what I would describe as humility.”

With emotion in his voice, Boehner recalled his bartender father working 10 or 12 hours a day yet still finding time to volunteer.

“So before you think about what you want to do in your life, I would suggest to all of you: Think about who you want to be before you think about what you want to be,” he said.

Boehner talks health care and golf in Middletown

Posted by akiefaber June 7th, 2011, 8:46 pm Post a Comment

House Speaker and West Chester resident John Boehner talked about his upcoming golf outing with President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden during a Middletown Rotary Club luncheon Tuesday, June 7, according to Cincinnati.com.

Congressman John Boehner Reporter Paul McKibben posted the story on Cincinnati.com:

Boehner, R-West Chester, remembered watching a cable show on Saturday where someone suggested that if Obama wants strokes from him, Boehner should tell him “ ‘Mr. President, you can have all the strokes you want. It’ll just cost you a trillion dollars a stroke.’”

“I thought it was a brilliant idea,” Boehner said.

The golf remarks were prompted by an audience question about the golf date. Other questions touched on health care and the level of partisanship in Washington. Boehner didn’t take questions from reporters. The question about partisanship centered on what to teach children.

“While I have big disagreements with the president, I try to teach my colleagues that you can disagree without being disagreeable,” he said.

On repealing the health care law passed last year, Boehner reminded the audience that the House earlier this year voted to repeal the law and not to fund it.

“This is why elections matter,” he said, noting next year’s election will have an impact on future of the nation’s health care system.

Boehner releases statement about the legal debt limit

Posted by akiefaber May 16th, 2011, 2:47 pm Post a Comment

House Speaker and West Chester resident John Boehner released the following statement today as the United States reaches its legal debt limit:

“Americans understand we simply can’t keep spending money we don’t have. Spending-driven deficits, record debt, and the threat of tax hikes are smothering our economy with uncertainty and making it harder for small businesses to hire new workers. As I have said numerous times, there will be no debt limit increase without serious budget reforms and significant spending cuts – cuts that are greater than any increase in the debt limit.

“As the Baby Boomers begin to retire, the thousands of Americans being added to the Medicare and Social Security rolls every day are an urgent reminder that we need to act now to protect those in or near retirement and save these programs for future generations. Half-measures and gimmicks won’t get the job done, and tax hikes will only hurt job creation and do more damage to our economy. House Republicans have passed a serious plan by Chairman Paul Ryan to put us on a path to balance the budget and pay down our debt, spur job growth, and save programs like Medicare for current retirees and future generations. In fact, under the House-passed plan, there are no changes to benefits for Americans 55 and older. We’ve taken action; now it’s time for Senate Democrats and President Obama to put forward a serious plan of their own.”
