Saturday 5K run, walk benefits fight against childhood obesity

The Center for Better Health and Nutrition at Cincinnati Children’s will hold its Hearts and Health Run/Walk Saturday at Voice of America MetroPark, 7850 VOA Park Drive, West Chester.

The fundraising event, which benefits summer camps for overweight and obese children, includes a 5K run and walk along with timed runs and walks of six and 12 hours, which are open to individuals and relay teams.

Awards will be given to the top male and female finishers.   All participants will receive medals and T-shirts.

A post-race party will be held following the event at 8 p.m., with healthy food offerings and activities.

Park Run for Parachute benefits children in foster care

Park run for ParachuteButler County’s Parachute CASA will hold its annual Park Run for Parachute 5K run and walk at 9 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 7 at Voice of America Park in West Chester.

Proceeds will help recruit and train volunteers — known as court appointed special advocates — to act as advocates for children in foster care.

The run will feature chip timing, awards, raffles, a kids fun run, music and food.

Registration cost is $25 by Sept. 28; day-of-event cost is $28.  Cost for children is $12 by Sept. 28 and $15 on race day.  Registration fees include a T-shirt and park entry fee for the day.

The Run To End All Runs 5K to take place Nov. 5

The Run To End All Runs 5K, a new event for The Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Southwest Ohio, will take place on Nov. 5 at Niederman Family Farm in Liberty Township from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to The Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America, whose mission is to cure Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, and to improve the quality of life of children and adults affected by these diseases.

Adults, who register before Oct. 26, will receive a t-shirt, admission to Niederman Family Farm and post-race nutrition and refreshments for $30. The cost of registration will rise to $35 after Oct. 26 and t-shirts cannot be guaranteed.

Children under 12 can register for $15 and spectators will be charged $10.

Prizes will awarded be awarded for the top three male and female runners in various age groups.

Roads to close July 4 in Liberty Township

A few Liberty Township roads will be closed Monday, July 4, to accommodate the Independence Day parade and 5K Run for Liberty, according to Cincinnati.com.

Lakota East state championship celebration An article posted on Cincinnati.com gave details about the road closures:

Bethany Road will close between 8-8:30 a.m. as the run begins. The area around the Kroger Marketplace will close from about 8-9:15 a.m. as the race proceeds.

Uniformed personnel will usher runners and walkers through intersections of the race, which begins at 8 a.m. from the Lakota East High School stadium. Runners will then head north around the Lakota East Freshman Campus, then south, around the Liberty Commons shopping complex, then back to the stadium.

To accommodate the 10 a.m. parade, also at Lakota East, Wyandot Road and Yankee Road, between Wyandot and Lakota Family YMCA, will be closed from 10-11 a.m., depending on the length of the parade.

The cost of the race is $20 if registered online by Wednesday, June 29, or $25 race day. Registration can be done online at www.liberty-township.com or by mail with check made out to Liberty Township Charitable Fund and mail to 5K Run for Liberty, c/o Steve Prescott, P.O. Box 454, Mason, OH 45040.

The grand marshal for the parade will be the Lakota East state championship baseball team (photo of celebration ceremony).

Butler Tech 5K Run/Walk takes place tomorrow

Butler Tech will have its 5K Run/Walk, hosted by the Butler County United Way, around the lake at Voice of America Park tomorrow, April 9. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. under the gazebo. The actual race will begin at 9 a.m.

The 5K “chipped” race is $25 for adults and $20 for youth under the age of 18.

Butler Tech’s website provides information about its history:

Butler Tech has been helping Butler County youth and adults to achieve their dreams since 1975. Starting with the original high school building, D. Russel Lee Career-Technology Center, it was one of the first joint vocational school districts in the state of Ohio. The original program offerings emphasized mechanical, industrial, and office occupations, all housed at a single campus located south of Middletown on State Route 4.

After the race, Voice of America Park will be hosting one of the area’s biggest events of the year in KiteFest, which will take place April 9-10 from noon to 5 p.m. each day. This is the seventh year for the festival. Last year, approximately 15,000 people visited the event.

Shamrock Shuffle to take place Saturday

The Union Centre Boulevard Merchant Association, the Community Foundation of West Chester/Liberty and West Chester Township will host the 2011 Shamrock Shuffle 5K, 10K and Leprechaun Lap & Block Party this Saturday, March 12.

The 5K and 10K races will begin at 8:30 a.m. and conclude at The Square at Union Centre with a “kegs and eggs” breakfast and Block Party.

The Leprechaun Lap, which is for children ages 3-10, will begin at 9:30 a.m.

According to the event’s press release, this year’s Shamrock Shuffle is presenting a unique opportunity for businesses, schools, non-profits or charitable organizations to raise funds through the “Shamrock Gives Back” program. Participants can build a team to raise funds to support their favorite charitable cause. Any school, non-profit, or community organization (i.e. sports team, booster, scouts program, that can be recognized as a non-profit) will have the opportunity to receive proceeds.

For every 25 adult (two children equal one adult) team members, a $250 grant will be made to the selected cause.

The cost to participate is $30. Same-day registration is $35. Cost for youth participants in the 5K and 10K is $15. The cost to participate in the Leprechaun Lap is $10.
