Lakota East hopes lib dub video goes viral for a good cause

Posted by akiefaber May 14th, 2013, 11:44 pm Post a Comment

Lakota East High School has already raised awareness and more than $11,000 for the Center for Spina Bifida Care at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, but that could only the beginning as the school hopes its “lip dub” video goes viral and attracts the attention of Ellen DeGeneres.

The video, which was first shown publicly during showings at the high school on Friday, was posted online Tuesday evening.

The “lip dub” was filmed April 18 at the high school. Film students from East and the University of Cincinnati pointed the cameras, while the project leaders from the Lakota East National Honor Society told them what to shoot.

Students were lip-synching to the music, dressed up in costumes, danced in the background, as well as used roller blades, glow sticks and a helicopter in an impressive production that lasted only one Thursday afternoon.

“I can honestly say that I’ve watched the lip dub more than 100 times. And it just keeps getting better each time I view it,” said senior Sydney Aten, NHS president. “I get goosebumps. I shed tears.

“It’s unlike anything else I ever have and probably ever will experience. I love my school. I love my teachers. I love my community. They made this happen.”

The project was kick started during a school assembly in February, when a student at VanGorden Elementary inspired East students to get behind it.

Amelia Murphy, 11, received a standing ovation during that assembly when she shared her story to a packed gym. Murphy, who suffers from Spina Bifida, has had 62 surgeries, many on her brain and her spine.

“Spina Bifida is basically a condition with your spinal cord and your brain,” Murphy said. “Symptoms vary. Some people can walk and some people can’t. I have had half my surgeries on my head. It can be really tough, but my family has been with me through all of it.”

The support of her family, which includes her sisters, Claire, 13, and Emma, 16, doesn’t end at school or at home. She also gets special attention during her visits to Cincinnati Children’s, where her mom, Pam, works as patient advocate in family relations.

With the attention of the community, East hopes it attract national awareness for Spina Bifida by having their video shared or featured on the “Ellen Show”.

Just prior to the filming, producers of the show contacted Aten, who said a producer told her that they are supportive of the cause and their efforts. They also said they wanted to get the message out and are anxiously waiting for the release of the video.

In the meantime, donations are still being accepted at the school’s donation website through Cincinnati Children’s website, giving.cincinnatichildrens.org/netcommunity/eastnhsdub.

The Mail Online noted: “Male guests sported Hawaiian shirts and slacks while the women were clad in sun dresses and semi-formal gowns.” Boehner, a West Chester Republican, wore a gray suit.

The fall deadlines to apply are June 21 for grades 7-8 and Aug. 15 for grades 9-12. The winter sports deadline is Sept. 23 and the spring sports deadline is Jan. 24, for all grades. A limited number of scholarships are available. Only one scholarship per student will be awarded in any given school year.

The Lakota Athletic Participation Fee Fund was established by private donations to assist families, who display a need, by covering half of the participation fee assessed to students participating in sports within Lakota Schools.

Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee comprised of residents from West Chester and Liberty towships. IRS knew of Tea Party profiling in 2011, report shows

Posted by akiefaber May 13th, 2013, 6:53 am Post a Comment

Gregory Korte (USA Today) reports:

The Internal Revenue Service official responsible for tax-exempt organizations was briefed in 2011 that her unit was targeting Tea Party groups for additional scrutiny, according to a draft timeline of events compiled by the agency’s inspector general.

That chronology cast doubt on a statement to reporters Friday by IRS Director of Exempt Organizations Lois Lerner that she only learned of the enhanced reviews through news reports last year, and that only low-level employees were involved in the decision. The scandal broke Friday when Lerner apologized for how the agency handled Tea Party-related groups’ tax-exempt applications. Her apology was first reported by the Associated Press.

The apology came in advance of the expected release of the critical report by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, which has been investigating the IRS’s treatment of Tea Party groups at the request of Congress. That report is expected this week, but excerpts obtained by USA TODAY provide a timeline investigators compiled through emails and interviews with IRS officials.

The timeline shows that on June 29, 2011, Lerner received a briefing on how IRS officials in Cincinnati were dealing with applications for tax-exempt status for Tea Party groups. The briefing paper showed that the IRS was subjecting certain groups to further investigation based on politically loaded terms in the tax-exempt application file. Groups were singled out for enhanced scrutiny if:

  • The words “tea party,” “patriots,” or “9/12 project” appeared anywhere in the group name or case file;
  • The group’s stated issues included government spending, government debt or taxes;
  • The organization had a goal of educating of the public via advocacy or lobbying to “make America a better place to live;”
  • Any statements in the case file critical of how the country is being run.

Under those criteria, 100 groups had their applications sent to a dedicated team of specialists for further investigation — adding months to the approval process, according to the report. Read the rest of this entry »

Jennifer Edwards Baker reports:

Lightning is to blame for a house fire at 6835 Stillington Drive in Liberty Township at about 1:45 a.m. Friday. The residents told emergency responders they heard a crack of lightning and then the roof and second floor caught fire, said Fire Chief Paul Stumpf. The fire completely gouged the roof, which collapsed.

“That happens a lot. You would be surprised how often lightning does cause a fire in some of the residential areas,” said National Weather Service meteorologist John Franks.

Fire crews quickly extinguished the blaze. The second floor and the roof appear to be a complete loss.

The 2,964-square-foot, four bedroom home is valued at about $300,000. Damage was set at $100,000.

The family – three adults – and their dog and three cats escaped, and firefighters rescued two cats who were hiding inside the house.

The American Red Cross was called to help them find temporary lodging.

Two firefighters suffered minor burns, including one who was treated and released at West Chester Hospital, Stumpf said. The other firefighter was treated at the scene.

Frosty Monday morning expected

Posted by akiefaber May 13th, 2013, 1:00 am Post a Comment

Mark Hansel reports:

The calendar says spring is here, but the overnight forecast calls for the region to experience some winter-like temperatures.

Scott Hickman, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Wilmington, said the Tri-state is under a frost advisory until Monday morning. Temperatures are expected to drop into the mid- to low-30s overnight, before rising into the upper 50s by midday.

“Anything that is sensitive to getting frozen should be covered up or brought inside,” Hickman said.

There is no precipitation in the forecast, so the low temperatures are not expected to cause any problems on area roadways.
